    Default oil pulling

so i heard about "oil pulling" today..its supposedly an ancient beauty treatment that works to help your skin become more radiant/blemish free, cures bad breath, & whitens teeth . you take an organic, cold-pressed, unrefined oil ( i'd do coconut oil myself) and swish it around in your mouth for 20 minutes a day. supposedly the oil absorbs plaque and bacteria. you floss, swish for 20 minutes, then brush when you get up in the morning. not sure if its all bull crap though, the article i read said that her dentist also recommended it and does it himself. i think i'm going to try it, i mean it can't hurt to try, considering its just oil!
anybody else ever heard of it, or had any positive experiences?
my only concern would be that i have a capped tooth in the front, which has kept me from whitening my teeth with anything more than a crest whitening strip.
edit: timing is key. exacty 20 minutes or the toxins will re-absorb. your saliva should be milky white from the oil pulling out bacteria

I've tried it. I've only done it a handful of times though, maybe once or twice a week... but most recently I've done it about 3 days in a row. Trying to be more regular. I use trader joes organic coconut. Not sure if it helps at all since I haven't been consistent. One tip though, they say not to spit it down the sink or toilet due to the oil possibly rehardening and making a clog (my oil is solid at room temp). I have to spit it into a bag and throw it away.

I actually first heard of it somewhere on here a while back. I started doing it since then, so maybe it's a year or two now and it does wonders for my teeth. I use coconut oil. I remember after a few months in having to get a tooth pulled and my dentist noticed something at the back of my molar and asked me if I was in pain. I told him it didn't hurt at all which really surprised him. After the tooth was pulled (not the molar) I wasn't allowed to rinse my mouth for a few days and the area the Dentist pointed out started to hurt. Once I started oil pulling again it stopped. I'm not saying to do this instead of dental work but it seems to really keep my mouth clean and prevent lots of damage from bacteria. I would also recommend to floss again after because the rinse seems to loosen more stubborn plaque that didn't come off the first time around.

PS: Once you get into a routine 20mins goes fast you can do it while you're showering/making breakfast/hair & makeup blah blah blah

    I do it.
The first time I tried it I put a big spoonful of sold coconut oil in my mouth and tried to swish it round to soften it. I gagged on the texture and ended up spitting it everywhere. It was a nightmare to clean up as I was in my bedroom and it got on my duvet and carpet and everything!

Anyway, now I sort of tuck it in my cheek until it turns liquid and then I start swishing it around. I do it while I'm showering as that takes about 20 mins. I set an alarm so I know when to spit, and then I brush my teeth straight afterwards as I don't like the oily feeling in my mouth.

I've found that my gums are healthier and that my chin spots have cleared up, and I had some stubborn plaque at the back too which has completely gone. Also, my husband has a terrible cold right now, and I don't even have the slightest sniffle. (I do take zinc though, so that might explain me not getting the cold)
My teeth were pretty white anyway, but if the oil whitens them too noticeably I'll have to get the filling on my front tooth replaced, as I had a chip fixed there last year. So far it looks fine though.

nice! so far its sounding like its going to be a good idea to start. i'm always looking for ways to save on having to go to the dentist, and ways to get my chin and jaw area to completely clear up. i'm just kinda worried about the gagging thing. i used to swallow flax seed oil % olive oil but i had to have a chase of juice in order not to gag.

I do this sporadically now; I used to do it more regularly.

I love weird health stuff like this. That said, I personally have never noticed a difference from oil pulling (I use coconut oil). No additional whitening or anything. I already have great oral hygiene (I use a waterpik, floss daily, and brush after every meal), so perhaps that's why I haven't noticed a difference. I don't believe the hype around how the oil 'changes' - people say they can see the metals and toxins when they spit the oil out into the sink. I think what people are actually seeing are emulsified fats mixed with saliva + whatever else they have stuck in their teeth. It may also be that once people start oil pulling, they start taking better care of their teeth and attribute that to the oil.

The reason I still do it is partially because I'm a health nut (even if I can't see visible effects, sometimes I'll keep doing something just in case it's helping unbeknownst to me). And also partially because I think it must help if you get any bits of food or bacteria stuck under your gums. Some people have pockets in their gums that can harbor bacteria, so these people would likely see some dental improvement. I also believe that the same effect could probably be achieved with water (I love my waterpik).

I do it in the morning, as my teeth are food free when I wake up so i can do it straight away. At night I would have to brush them before oil pulling, and again afterwards, which is a bit much for my sensitive gums. Brushing twice a day is enough for me.

I'm generally not very 'woo' when it comes to health, I very rarely go down the all natural route, but I am obsessed with oils, especially coconut! I also use other oils to do the oil cleanse method when I can be bothered. I'm out of the habit at the moment though, just a manky old make up wipe for me a the moment!

thanks guys! wow can't believe i had never heard of it before. welp, i did it last night, and this morning, and my mouth felt amazing afterwards! did it for the full 20 minutes with coconut oil because i figured that would be the least gag-inducing, and it has lots of antibacterial properties. i tried looking it up online and it seems no nobody has done any real conclusive testing on it yet at all, but i noticed that my teeth were looking much whiter and shinier even after only doing it twice, and my mouth felt much less dry.
since bad breath is usually brought on by having a mouth that is too dry, i can definitely see how it would help, plus get rid of bacteria. i like it!

totally works, but you can get detox sickness if you start doing it frequently all of a sudden. since coconut oil is full of vitamin e I've noticed it's dampened some of the problems with my porphyria. my gums are less likely to bleed, and my teeth get a little brighter most times I do it. Really weird to feel the volume increasing in your mouth though o_O

I'm skeptical of it at best. Plus, it turns white because the oil creates an emulsion with your saliva. I'm in this camp really... it's not scientifically possible for this to purify your blood. http://www.lisabarger.com/is-oil-pulling-a-scam.html

yeah i'm not looking to purify my blood, i'm sure it can't do that! but it really makes you mouth feel great, very moisturized and clean. i love coconut oil for my hair ( its seriously the best thing i've ever tried for moisturizing and de-frizzing) i'm glad i found another use for it.

I do twice a day, for my opinion really helps to keep my teeth white. And really helps with a "dead kitty" in the mouth
If you add an activated charcoal you will see even more benefits from oil pulling.

How do you use the coconut oil in your hair? I just bought a sample of macadamia nut hair treatment at Ulta but not sure if it helped any when I tried it today. Natural coconut oil sounds better. I'm trying to get myself ready to audition and all the stress I've been under seems to have manifested itself in my hair and skin. I normally have clear skin and somewhat dry hair that looks ok with a straightened but now my hair all thinning and my skin looks unhappy.

^ you need to put it on your hair before bed. its best left in for 12-14 hours. be sure to massage your scalp with it too, and a little goes a long way!! then shampoo thoroughly in the morning, and condition. it seals the cuticle, moisturizes, and its anti bacterial so its just an all around great hair mask!

I recommend organic sunflower oil as an alternative to coconut oil, it's really tasty. I can't last 20 mins though, so I do 2x10 mins instead.

Initially I did it at right before bed. I read somewhere to do it early in the morning since that's when lots of bacteria is in your mouth after you slept all night. So an a.m. pull would get rid of that.

I still mostly do it at night though, I hope it leaves a barrier or something to lessen the bacteria during sleep. It's just so much easier to pull while I wash my face, or the dishes right before bed. I do the full 20 minutes.

On amazon or ebaybut watch out girl, charcoal is really messy, but i love the result clean, naturally white teeth without any chemical harm. Charcoal is absorb the dirt out of teeth, also i like to take from time to time charcoal cuz of strong detox its provide.

I just remind that i had read in the book about detox, why we must to do oil pulling while we are on a detox. So the answer is when we are on a detox, your immune system may also low down under stress from a detox and bacteria will attack your teeth and to prevent problems with tooth decay and gums we must oil pull.

Oil pulling is great! I've gotten some good results when adding a drop of clove essential oil to the mix (to help stave off some of the mouth bacteria). Hope this isn't TMI, but I've found OP helps a ton with post-nasal drip and chest congestion (helps bring up all of the undesirable "matter"). Doing neti-pot afterwards also helps wash away left over oil residue from the throat and sinus cavities. Usually, I pull with coconut oil but sometimes find the flavor too...coconutty Sesame oil is a good alternative too.
