Default Hey everyone! Looking to get into the business myself this year

Before I get started, I just wanted to thank everyone for this website. I have already learned a lot just from reading some of the posts on here during the past few days. Anyway, my name is Natalie and I am an art history student. I'm interested in becoming a dancer just to have some extra cash right now. I am currently at home for the summer so I am spending my free time learning to dance. I'm taking two different dance classes so far and may add a third.

Dancing is fine, but you should spend some time learning sales and business skills. Practice being a hustler by convincing men at bars to buy you a drink. Even better if it is a coffee bar. This is the kind of sales knowledge you are going to need to make decent money as a dancer. The actual ability to dance is not even part of equation as far as your income potential.

Dance classes are fun and great cardio, but you really don't need them to be a dancer (it's all trial and error for us i.e. watching the other girls and imitating them etc). So, if you want to work, just arrange an audition/interview and go for it . Good luck.

Welcome! I know the other ladies have already said it, but it bears repeating that dance classes are 100% unnecessary to being a stripper. I really recommend visiting a strip club as a patron so you can see yourself just how minimal the dancing is. Stage shows and lap dances are really more like lingerie modelling than dancing, except for the pole monkeys, but pole tricks are not needed to make money outside of urban/stage-centric clubs -- I say this as someone who has been dancing for years and can't even do a basic spin. As a stripper, you're not selling a dance so much as companionship, and your conversation skills will take you infinitely farther than any dance skills.

Agreed with others - dance classes may be good for developing body confidence, but they're generally pretty terrible for dance moves. Whenever a girl gets on stage and does something that looks choreographed, it looks super bizarre (unless you're a feature dancer). You should be thinking about everything but dancing: outfit, makeup, shoes (balance!), hustle skills, club options, etc.

In other words, being a 'dancer' involves very little actual dancing.

I'm a lazy dancer and I do just fine. It's your hustle that makes you last in this business not being Martha fucking Graham.

If someone has a random dance background, how do you suggest "turning off" the habit of moving in a "dance" type of way versus a "stripper" type of way? Worried about this. It's almost like how pole dance moves seem really housewifey. I love watching good pole dancing but I don't think I've ever seen a stripper stand there & do body rolls on a pole. Lol. It's just different. I guess practice is the only way to get it right?

Practice and watching other dancers moves. Once you get the hang of it, it will become second nature.
I think it's a good thing when dancers have a background in a different type of dance. I think especially a ballet background helps with fluidity and grace. (You know, without being too obvious)

Having sm dance or other athletic exp can do wonders for your coordination & stamina. I have a martial arts background myself & once I get back into prime condition then stage is just abt working out & having a good time for me since muscle memory takes over. That said, I am a pole monkey who has a lot of improvement to do on floorwork & up/down transitions. It is always a work in progress.

Because dancing doesn't matter all that much to your overall income, don't worry about being too polished on stage. Most of the customers have no idea what the difference is, anyway. I've done partner dancing for years, and on occasion my customers recognize that I'm moving in a way that is typical of a partner dance. The shoes tend to make you move differently, so it isn't obvious.
