Default Want to dance but have anxiety, any advice on benzos?

I've been considering auditioning at a club for a while now because it seems really exciting to be an exotic dancer, plus I could use the money. However, I'm a very anxious person and when I get nervous it shows (I get all shaky and sometimes sweaty, and can't focus well). Alcohol calms me but I don't want to audition completely drunk and if I'm anxious/nervous enough, it doesn't help much anyway. So I'm thinking about getting a prescription for either Xanax or Valium before auditioning to help take the edge off (I'm hoping I won't need it after the first month if I do get hired at a club). Anybody have any advice on this? I've only taken Valium once, before I got my wisdom teeth taken out and I remember being really relaxed. For those who have anxiety about stripping and have taken any benzos, did it help you? I'd love to hear experiences.

Also, random but what should I wear to audition? I was thinking a sexy top showing cleavage and a black skirt with heels, or maybe just a cute tanktop/cami with the skirt?

be very careful with benzos. a withdrawal can kill you. i don't think its a good idea to HAVE to take any kind of medication before you feel can work..long term it will get you addicted.
if you do have an anxiety problem, it could be beneficial to get on benzos, as long as you are very responsible with them. honestly, they just put me to sleep or make me feel slow and stupid, and don't interact well with drinks.

I wouldn't recommend taking benzos, it is too easy to become dependent on anxiolytics.

I have anxiety, and I've been medicated for it. I truly understand the appeal, but don't take that shit. It's habit forming and dangerous, and if you start taking it to dance, you will probably come to closely associate dancing and mood-altering substances, which will not be pretty.

Auditioning turns out to be not as terrifying as you're anticipating -- scope out the clubs in your area that you want to audition at, call in to ask what times are best for you to come in and audition as well as what you should wear. Go in knowing the basic requirements and it'll help you feel more confident. I really don't suggest getting a prescription for an anxiety med that you seem to be unfamiliar with just for the sake of auditioning and for sure don't suggest taking benzo's if/when you start working. There's a lot of threads on here about auditioning, but I'll give you the consensus -- JUST BITE THE BULLET AND DO IT. It's nerve racking yes, but you don't want to be in a foggy state of mind when you first audition -- you'll come off sloppy to the hiring manager or risk losing your balance on stage. It's over quickly, trust!!! Good luck!!!!!

Also, I highly recommend auditioning at a friendly dive (or smaller club). Go in earlier and ask if you can stand and watch for a while before your audition. Try to acclimate to the club during that time - have a seat, watch the stage rotation, ask girls questions as you think of them. Just breathe, and don't put pressure on yourself to actually have to go through with it. Do your makeup and bring your outfit / shoes, but tell yourself that you don't have to audition if it doesn't feel right. And then, if after a couple of hours you're feeling more confident, go for it!! You may even want to go during the day shift if that's an option: fewer customers, and the girls will have more time to chat with you casually. The managers will also be less stressed out and busy.

We are all nervous when we go into a new club. Be kind to yourself! Listen to your body.

I used to take Klonopin. (Benzo) When I took it at work it made me slighly lazy and out of it. It mixed horribly with ANY alcohol.
I wouldn't get an anxiety medication simply to take the edge off auditioning. Just prepare yourself instead. Watch YouTube videos, read up on Stripperweb, etc.

Regardless of how you may normally treat your anxiety, if you feel the need to self-medicate to do this job (or any job really) then you probably shouldn't be doing it. The 'Let's PARTY!!' vibe in most clubs can make it difficult enough to keep a drinking/drug tendency under control. Jumping into dancing, the best way to do it is just head first into the deep end.

Worried abt your first-time performance? We have all been there. As nerve-wracking as that first audition is, once you've done it once you've done it a million times. Every1 starts out new, & even the vets get shit-talked from time to time. You will find quite a few introverts on this board, but we find ways to make it work. Read up on our experiences & advise here on SW, take a few days to practice walking in your heels at home (breaking in new stilts can be a bitch even when you've been dancing for awhile) & just go in there & do it. You will be hard-pressed to show the mgrs anything they have not seen b4.

A critical point here is that, as a newbie, if you drug yourself for your audition (alcohol, benzos, etc.), then it is probable that you will continue to use that substance throughout your time dancing. You need to prove to yourself that you can do this job without dulling your brain. Otherwise you will believe that you cannot do the job without partaking in your drug of choice.

That is a very easy way to begin a lifelong drug habit. We see it all of the time in this industry.

You sound similar to how I am, I have severe anxiety and panic disorder and if I don't have something to calm me down I am a wreck, it is very noticeable how nervous I am to the point people always think I'm on some kind of hardcore drug, I've even had people ask me where to get whatever drug they thought I was on, I would tell them to fuck off. To get to my point, if yours is that severe then the strip club isn't the place to be, it took me years to finally realize this myself. The only times I could make money is if I was buzzing good off of alcohol or on benzos or both, if I went to work sober then I was probably leaving in the negative.

From years of experience doing this then I'm going to tell you straight forward that if you think you are going to be able to only take benzos to get you started and then just stop taking them and be perfectly fine, you are wrong, you are going to feel WORSE than when you first started, probably a whole lot worse and it will probably turn into an addiction.

There is a lot of good advice in this thread and don't give up on dancing just because of this, try going in sober and see how you feel, if you know you can't do it without benzos or alcohol then don't do it.

Hey! I also have anxiety and panic disorder as well - I was a wreck the first day I started dancing (I didn't have an audition). What I did for myself (and remember, what works for me doesn't always work for you) was this: for the first week that I worked (not literally 7 days but maybe the 3 or 4 days that I worked that week) I let myself drink, because I was so goddamn nervous for so many different reasons. My anxiety wasn't over just stripping but over starting a new job, being in a new environment, all that good stuff. So after that first week of getting used to walking in the door, knowing where to go and who to talk to for what, I told myself I had to work for a month sober to make sure that I could actually do the job without self medicating. I felt a little weird the first day or two, but it became really normal to me really fast. Now if I feel like having a drink I do, but I'd say 95% of the time I work sober. If I REALLY feel too anxious to work, I try to take the night off to just chill out and watch a Disney movie or something.

That being said - if you show up to an audition obviously wasted, the people hiring you probably won't be super into it.

Hmmmm. I would see no problem with it if you already have a benzo prescription, but you don't. You also just describe yourself as an anxious person but that is a very broad and ambiguous way to be. Anxiety is a pretty normal and typical feeling/response, and it's not unless it begins to control and destroy your quality of life that you would be considered for benzos or should even try to rely on them.

I'm saying this because I DO have a benzo prescription, and I go off and on them intermittently every year or so. They can be dangerous when you don't understand your own tolerance, or when you decide to take risks like drinking on them (horrible idea, take it from me, you will turn into the biggest idiot). But my situation is different because I am afflicted with PTSD, body dysmorphic disorder, panic disorder and as a result of all this I am otherwise agoraphobic without my medication. (Can you tell I'm a nutcase? lol) Aaaand good luck with finding a doctor who will actually prescribe them to you without a former and extensive mental health medical record, without being diagnosed by a psychologist with a disorder, and without first taking his holistic anti-anxiety advice and/or antidepressants.

OOoooh and also, benzos have a propensity to either aggravate or downright cause depression. If you are having a rough time and you're high on them, you can either find yourself crying in the locker room (say, because of rejection) or having uninhibited feelings of anger.

I haven't auditioned actually or worked yet, but my bet would be on the top showing cleavage and a black short skirt with heels.

I also have an anxiety disorder as well as depression. I do have a xanax, but usually only take it when I am really high strung or having a panic attack.
I still get nervous and anxious, though not from dancing. Talking to people makes me nervous.
I do smoke before going into work, but I've found being successful is the best cure for my nerves. Once I've sold a dance or two nerves just slip away.
Meditation also really helps with anxiety. I've been meditating for 12 years, so feel free to pm me if you want some tips.

I danced with anxiety, what helped me cope was lowering my general anxiety levels by listening to relaxation tapes, drinking herbal teas and chilling before going to work, and really getting into my stripper persona so it wasn't me that was facing this intimidating crowd of people, it was this confident party girl. Good luck xx

good advice... if you need a prescription to help control your anxiety than that's one thing. If you need to take any mind altering substances to perform your job; than I believe your playing with fire. Drug abuse is a slippery slope. You shouldn't do anything anyway that you really don't enjoy.

I would say if you have to take drugs to perform in front of a crowd "Do not Dance". Because I dance for the pure business aspect of it. It easy for me to work sober and enjoy what I do for a living as a dancer, because I view dancing as a "career" and not a "Hangout". It will help you if you view dancing like a career rather than something that you do for extra money. At the end of the day it is a career which is why there are manager etc.... we are also entrepreneurs. We are responsible for our own profit generation and our own income. So, I would say if dancing is something that makes you so terrified that you have to use drugs just to do it. i'd say don't do it. Ive been dancing for 7 years and retired for 3 and coming back to dancing. I would definietly say that I love what i do and there isnt a job on the planet that can beat it.

Start off being a waitress first to get comfortable with the strip club atmosphere. If you are hot management will try to get you to go on stage when it is slow.

NEVER work in an altered state.

Telling yourself you need drugs the first night or any night to do a job isn't a job you need.

There are positive therapies & meditation to help deal with new situations. EVERYBODY is nervous the first time they go up on stage or for that fact start a new job, a new school or go into a new situation. It is apart of life & the adventure of it.
