Default The Pros and Cons of Stripping

    Pros:
    1. Independence
    2. Money, good money
    3. Set your own schedule
    4. No self-centered annoying boss
    5. No dress code (depends on the club, but pretty much)
    6. No strict outlined responsibilities (that are often there when you take vanilla job)

    Cons:
    1. Very limited opportunities for career development (no career ladder to climb)
    2. No job benefits (health insurance, 401K, etc)
    3. Earning potential drops as you age (not valid in all cases, but in most)
    4. A minuscule chance of being bogusly charged for prostitution during the raid is always present
    5. Physical inability to do this job for 40 years (in contrast to almost any vanilla job)
    6. Rude customers/unwanted physical contact

All I could think of right now. Add more if you think of something more!

A lot of this will depend on where you live and what you look like. A thick girl with a pretty face won't do well in a lot of clubs on the west coast, but she might do well on cam. A stick thin girl with an average face in vegas may not do well on cam, but may bank in the club. It also depends what a girl prefers (i.e. dancers get touched non-stop and cammers have their identities outed often).

unfortunately i had to deal with a sadistic boss, sort of strict dress code, and we have to schedule a month ahead :/
i also think a lot of girls make better money as they age, as long as they take good care of themselves. of course there are limits to that of course.
pros for me would be :
only have to work 2 days a week. 3 max and that's all i need to work
    good exercise
i enjoy dressing up, doing my hair/nails/ makeup to the 9s
pretty easy to get hired, start immediately. and make cash in hand that night.
when i have a great night, i feel insanely pumped. i can't even get to sleep when i get home. almost nothing else gives me such a natural high.

    cons:
the constant fending off of hands can wear you down real fast!
management is for the most part exploitive, never sides with the girls, and glorified pimps. management causes me more anger than the custies.
    runs your body down
the low i get when i have a bad night is very low

Off the top of my head...

    Pros:
-possibility of making a LOT of £ in a short period of time (unlimited earning potential)
    -get to sleep in
-never have to work a 40 hour work week (unless you want to)
-can work as much as you or as a little, get to make your own schedule, even if you do have to book in advance
-get to drink and smoke at work
-get to take breaks at work whenever you want
-can move around to different places easily, get hired instantly, begin instantly
-get to have fun dressing up for work
    -lots of exercise
-when you have a great night you get a high from it
-sometimes customers can be a lot of fun to be around

    Cons:
-having to hide what you do from family, friends, flatmates
-not being able to go out on the weekends
-money is inconsistent and there is no guarantee you'll make anything
-sometimes making money is out of your hands, i.e. the club is dead
-no benefits, possibility of advancement, if you get hurt you're out of work, if you get pregnant you're out of work, resume gaps make vanilla work hard to find if you dance too long
-working at night sometimes results in sleeping all day and missing out on life
-sometimes customers are emotionally/physically abusive, and sometimes management is!
-difficult to prove you have a steady income for things like flats, financing, etc
-sometimes have to deal with mentally unstable, drug/alcohol addicted, petty/mean, or dirty co-workers
-when you do bad, it can be hard not to take it personally, since you are the product you're pushing all night

I can only speak personally, so here's my points.

    Pros-
*you can have a personality on the job. 'The customer is always right' bullshit goes out the window really quick.
    *staying active. Constantly. Mentally, physically.
*cash in hand at the end of the day.
*drinking on the job! Also falls under the 'cons'

    Cons-
*you won't be able to relate to the majority on just about anything. After enough time, everything looks different and there's no way to go back to the ignorance you had.
*DRAMA. Fucking drama. The management has got bullshit spewing all over the place, there's a drunk dancer making a move on your regular, and a big spender is getting all jealous because you're fawning over someone else who's handing you stacks. It's hard not to let it get under your skin.
*employment. Don't think you'll be found out? Sorry, honey, better to bet for than against.
*want to be treated like a piece of meat? No, seriously. You will run into that guy who thinks he can belittle you at best.

To the cons, I'd probably add relationship/dating issues .

    Pros:
    - Personal empowerment. Seriously, this job has made me love myself more than I could even imagine.
    - The money
    - If a customer pisses you off, you can tell him to fuck off. This was something I hated about vanilla jobs... I always had trouble giving in to their dumb demands and rudeness.
    - You're kind of hosting a party! Customers come in to have a great time!
    - The alcoholic in me says a pro is that I can drink (see also: cons)
    - Owning more lingerie than I ever have!

    Cons:
    - Like someone else said, I really take it hard when I don't make a lot of money. I'll be depressed until I go in again. It can feel so personal.
    - Those nights you keep getting rejected over and over and over.
    - Grabby customers/customers who get too sloppy drunk.
    - I can drink. I have a problem with alcohol and this job really doesn't provide support.
    - My club makes me work 6 nights a week, which is exhausting.
    - Bitchy coworkers.
    - Sleeping all day
    - Body feels so sore and exhausted after a long night.

^^Your club makes you work 6 nights a week?! WTF! That's like slave labour!

Is there another club you can work where you have the freedom to work as little or as much as you want? Being forced to work that much as a dancer is fucking insane to me. Seriously, if I were you, I'd go elsewhere, unless you're really happy there. :/

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Most of the top earners I've ever known were over 30. In my current club all the top earners are 35+.

    Pros:
-The ultimate freedom in earning ability. Pack up all your stuff and drive across the country and have a job that night you arrive at your new destination.
-Low bar to entrance (no specialized training needed).
-High to very high earning potential.
    -Fun
-The occasional hot dude buys dances.

    Cons:
-Dangerous. A lot of bad shit happens in strip clubs.
    -Socially Isolating
-It can be difficult to get out when you feel you need to step away from dancing.
-Boyfriends/ men we date, can be a big source of stress about our work.
-Exacerbates any problems with substance abuse.

a couple more that haven't been listed yet...

    Pros:

    - opportunity to travel for 'work' as little or as much as you choose
    - opportunity to 'rub elbows' with upscale men ... sometimes expanded to accessing 'specialized' information
    - highest earnings potential of any legal job not requiring advanced educational credentials + years of work experience
    - 'physical' requirements of dancing promote / require 'staying in shape'

    Cons:

    - must pay higher tax rate ( an extra 7.65% on every dollar of US earnings ) than 'employees'
    - history of adult entertainment industry work may restrict / deny future options to work in other industries
    - high earnings potential is relatively short in duration
    - physical 'toll' on the body may lead to / exacerbate future health problems

    This's a great thread!
Everything's been pretty much listed, but the cash in hand (if & when you can make it) is great!
For a disadvantage, I'd say right now seems to be harder to get hired.

Default Re: The Pros and Cons of Stripping

Really This is a great thread! There are some the Pros and Cons of Stripping, follow here:

    Pros:
1.There is a significant amount of money to be made in this industry. Maybe enough to change your life.
2.Power. I would be lying if I didn't admit it felt good to excite men, tease them, and toy with them. I love the game, and if you are like me you will too.
3.Excitement. This is exactly what’s missing in most people’s lives. The strip club is an endless well of stimulating stories.
4.You will learn skills and things about life that you never thought existed. Working as a stripper will make you tough if you can conquer darkness and choose to let it ignite you.

    Cons:
1.Stripping is a dangerous job. You can attract stalkers and obsessive personalities. It brings high risks.
    2.Germs. Stranger’s germs—an even bigger factor.
3.Every profession requires an investment: costumes, stilettos, house fees, and essential safety supplies .
4.Stripping is emotionally and physically exhausting.
5.Working nights can age you (working in Yin time harms the body), and the club environment will disillusion you, make you look at the world differently.
6.There is always the potential to not make a profit or end up in the negative at the end of your shift.

Stay w/ this job long enough, interact w/ enough perverts, drug addicts, & general drama-llamas, & you start to get a little (or a lot) cynical. Sm of the posts in the 'You know you're a stripper when …' thread reflect this attitude. Your internal BS detector becomes phenomenally sharp, the things ppl say or do to get sex/more $$$/maintain control over others, the ability to tell w/in 10sec of seeing a person what drug they're on …

    Pros:
    Good Money
    Compliments
    Confidence
    Independence
    Excitement

    Cons:
    The Bad Nights
    Competing with extras-girls
    Host/"Special Girl" Politics
    Escalating Housefees and fines
The "customer is always right" policy
Lots of terrible people (in the dressing room -and- on the floor)
Constant stress... worrying if you'll make your quota that night or that week
    The physical exhaustion
    Stupid rules
Disgusting human behavior that would be considered unconscionable absolutely anywhere else
Needing to keep it secret from a lot of people
Zero job security, no ability to advance careerwise
    Burn out

Everything is personal. You aren't judged on your work/product/performance... you're evaluated on your looks, your body, your weight, your skin, your age, basically everything superficial. It's not your report, it's you. It's not the painting you made, it's you. It's not the app you built, it's you. You're the product AND the salesman... it's difficult not to take it personally sometimes because it is totally personal.

Nothing is off limits, HR doesn't exist. You can be suspended for gaining weight or wearing the wrong nail polish color or for "disrespecting" a special customer... etc.

If the pros didn't outweigh the cons, and for the moment they still do, I would have to quit.

    Viva La Stripping!

    For me personally:
    PROS
    1. I make far more than I could working anywhere else at this point in my life
    2. I love dancing and seducing men for a living
    3. I can not show up for days and no one questions me. I don't have to juggle studying and working.
    4. I can work nights (which is great since in at Uni)

    CONS
    1. It gets in the way of school
    2. I've never been more tired since I began stripping. It's hard getting off at 2 and going to class at 9.
    3. Doing your own taxes
    4. Facing judgement or hiding it from family
    5. When guys lick my nipples

    Pros:

    fast money, money high
    working nights >>> working mornings
    making my own schedule
working 20 hours a week and making bank
being able to buy large ticket items in short amount of time
    getting fit, showing it off
applause and being worshiped, being a pseudo celebrity
getting to be my colorful self (tattoos, piercings, haircolors, personal style flair)
    meeting interesting people
being able to be choosy about who I make money off of
ie, not having to deal with assholes, fuck them if they are rude
hanging out with crazy, crude, beautiful women when it's slow

    cons:
    sometimes it's slow
PMS absolutely kills my hustle. I hate everyone and they hate me (how it feels)
    occasional petty drama with girls
sometimes customers just too damn pushy about OTC (never had 5+ guys a shift wheedling me for my real name, phone number, dinner out, giving me hotel room keys etc when I made sandwiches for a living)
    shoes fucking hurt
have to shave my twat all the time, constant phases of razor burn
toenails always look like shit, have to wear socks
can't ever get all my makeup off
have to call in over ass pimples or really bad period cramps

    cons continued :
its all about politics and petty little popularity games. its not enough just to keep your head down, do your job, and then leave. you can be the paragon of a good stripper : always punctual, polite, respectful, no drama, never drink or do drugs, never call out, always pay house fee, etc but you'll get fired over bullshit and the druggy bitch who skips shifts will take your place because she's fucking the manager. you have to kiss the right asses, play the favorites game, and laugh off sexual harassment ( cuz who are you gonna report it to, really?), and put up with handsy chester-the-molester customers if they are high rollers. if you dont make the club enough money by any means necessary, well consider your job in jeopardy.
clubs have no loyalty for their girls. its like a huge high school experience on steroids.

Default Re: The Pros and Cons of Stripping

    Pros:
~ Make your own schedule. You can work 10 hours a week or 40, come in whatever time you want, stay as long (or as short) as you want
~ Money, duh. Even on slow days it's still 3x what I'd make doing anything else
~ Get to play dress up and have an excuse to buy dresses/lingerie/makeup
~ My DJ finds awesome new music all the time
~ The customer is never, ever right; if they want to argue that they are, the bouncer will change their mind
~ I find it easier to get approved for apartments, car loans, etc. when they just want a note from my manager; the managers don't know what anyone makes and just put a generic $5000 a month for any girl who asks for a letter. Even when I haven't been making nearly that much (like during summer!), I can move or w/e without much trouble. YMMV, of course.
~ Emergency bill come up? Pick up an extra shift.

    Cons:
~ Relationship drama, SOs who just don't get it, etc.
~ Being asked a million questions when people find out what you do... including the super rude "How much do you make?" question

    Good thread.

    Pros:

    - Even in my worst weeks, I've managed to make as much in three days as I would working five days in my other jobs.

    - Freedom to choose which days I work.

    - I'm in the best shape of my life.

    - I have ample time and energy to pursue the things I'm passionate about.

    - I value the people who know and love me a lot more now (after 100 drunk guys tell you they're in love with you because you put your tits in their face, the people who actually know you become really important)

    - Similarly, I appreciate compliments from people who see me in daylight with no makeup on a lot more now, and I care a lot less about looking good in every situation (once someone pays $2000 to sit and stare at you for a few hours, it's hard to care what random stangers on the street think of the way you look).

    - I am tough as nails now. I used to get terrible social anxiety, and feel nervous about being in large groups. I won't say I'm cured, but I do find crowds and talking to people a lot less scary now, and I don't worry so much about pissing people off.

    Cons:

    - The hours.

    - Knowing all the words to your least favorite songs, and having them constantly stuck in your head

    - I don't feel that I have to get drunk to work, but I do drink more now than I ever have before.

    - Maintenance. I was never into getting my nails done or fake tanning, and I find it tiring to have to do all that stuff now. I never even used to shave my legs on a regular basis.

    - I've become obsessed with the parts of my body that make me money. I never used to care about my tits, except that they gave me back pain and made it hard to find cute bras. Now I'm constantly looking at them in the mirror, worried they're getting smaller or saggier, and wondering if I'll ever need a boob job.

    - Like many jobs that are physical in nature, there is a time limit. It can also make you feel really old. I'm only 28, which in reality is young, but by stripping standards I'm practically retirement age.

    - It is dangerous.

    - It is physically and emotionally exhausting.
