Default Should dj's get 10 percent

Hey! I know it's the usual thing for strip club dj's to get 10%. I tried searching this forum, couldn't find anything. Do you think it's fair for them to get 10%? So if I made 1k, I don't think they deserve $100. Just my opinion. If I made $1k on stage and he helped by telling them to tip, then they tipped, that'd be different. I gave the bartender money tonight ($50) bc she helped me get the champagne room more than anyone else, but the DJ got mad I didn't tip him enough.

i don't think anybody deserves anything for just showing up and doing the bare minimum. so no.but if a dj helped me out, played songs that got the crowd going and made me money, then he definitely deserves a good tip!!

Right! He's like "where were you all night?" I said I was drunk! As in mind your own business! You don't help me with rooms, I shouldn't help you with tip. I don't wanna sound selfish but you didn't do anything for me!

Who the hell says they get 10%???

I'm all for tipping DJs, they work hard and can make or break your night, I've known girls who never tipped DJs at all and it never ended well for them (usually it ended with being put up to an extended version of something like "Who Let The Dogs Out?" with lighting that would make Angelina Jolie look ugly) but 10% is a LOT to give. I just normally tipped a DJ 1-2$ a dance in America, no one tips in London so I've dropped that. So in the USA that usually amounted to around 2-4% of my earnings (1-2$ on a $40 dance). I have never, ever tipped a DJ 10% of my earnings unless they did something special for me, like put me on stage when guys were making it rain and it wasn't my turn on the rotation, kept me off the stage all night, yelled at guys to tip, let me skip stage because a custy had come in, etc. But, I've also never worked in a stage-centric club, so perhaps it's different. People I would tip 10% would be a doorman or host, but again, ONLY if they did something worth tipping for, like recommending me to a big spender that ended in a VIP and large tip. 10% is a lot for him to just be expecting for doing his regular job... IMHO, anyway. Sounds like someone's a little greedy and entitled over there.

Every club I've ever worked in America has the requirement of 10% to the dj. I felt like I was a selfish B if I tipped less. (And yes, it's always less bc I don't think they work as hard as me to get a percentage of my earnings). In ATL, they had set prices so they would tell you how much you had to tip or else you'd get in trouble

^I've only ever worked in CA (but have worked in a number of different clubs there over a 5 year period) and I never, ever heard of any club requiring girls to tip 10%. But, like I said, CA is not known for being a stage-centric place.

I had been in several states and is usually up to the clubs. I only tip them 10% or more ONLY if they play songs I like (that are titty bar appropiate, of course). One particular DJ always left with at least 20% because he always played me good music that got me insane tips.

I had have DJs DEMANDING the 10%. One particular DJ in southeast Virginia was a 10% nazi and he spoke like 80% of the time and would play shitty songs. I was banned from that particular club for not tipping him. It was a shame 'cause that place had an insane earnign potential (for just being a stage only BIKINI club).

If a DJ played my music and not for anyone else unless I allowed it (I brought in my own music), and helped me make money he got a generous tip. If he screwed up my music, was unprofessional etc he got little to no tip. I would resent paying these DJ's 10%.

I'll tip the good DJ's $20-30, because they're freaking awesome and do a lot for me. The DJ that plays shit music and can't pronounce my name right hasn't gotten a tip from me in a month.

There isn't a mandatory DJ tip in my club, so I can get away with it.

    Hell no?

I tip my DJ a $20 when he plays me good music and I made money. If I walk out with less than $400, he'll get $5 - $10. I work in an urban club, and I'm one of the only girls who tips him because most of the girls are broke, can't hustle and are ratchet af.

If you can get on the DJ's good side, by all means do so. He can be your most useful ally and can make the difference between a good night and a bad one by skipping you if you're in the middle of closing a sale, or putting you up if a group matching your target demographic just came in. The easiest way to get on a DJ's good side is by tipping.

The percentage you tip can go down as your earnings go up without making you a bad tipper. For example, if I net 150 I'll tip 20, if 600 I'll tip 50, if 1000 I'll tip 80.

That said, some people are just assholes and deserve as little as you can get away with giving them.

At my club, it's a mandatory 10% which is split between management and DJ... which I resent heartily. Only one of my managers is any use for anything; two are furniture to me; and one is a dick that constantly tries to fuck me for more money off VIPs and house fees. The DJs are the same way. The good one, I wouldn't mind giving him 5%. The other two fuck up rotations all the time so it's easy to miss your stage and get bitched at, and one just plays awful shit despite me telling him specific artists at least 5 times.

SO I wish it was merit-based, but alas it isn't. I don't think it's fair, since they really don't do much in my experience, and 10% can be a big chunk. I am curious how much the DJs make via club paychecks, since it is actually illegal to force us to tip an employee who makes minimum wage or more...

We have a mandatory 10% tip for management and security, so another 10% for the DJ is excessive. I really wish they would cut the DJ in on our tipout, but they stopped doing that when they started tipping security. Like I said, I don't mind giving the good DJ's a tip, but I would resent having to tip a shit employee. I used to be a "dancing waitress" and there was a mandatory 10% tip for the bar. I resented having to tip a certain bitch bartender, which was a big reason why I quit waitressing.

ETA: The DJ's at my club make $4.90 and hour, as do the bartenders, which is minimum wage for tipped employees.

^ i think its bullshit that management gives them so little, and basically relies on the strippers to pay THEIR employees a decent wage. in my years of stripping i've definitely noticed that its club culture to always go to the strippers with hands out, while at the same time generally treating us like shit.
if the DJs at my club had the power to skip me, or put me on when stage was good, or downloaded certain music that i loved, i would tip them a hell of a lot more.. but stage time is very strict. all they can really do to help me is play good music they already have

^ It is bullshit, but I understand why they do it. They want people working hard to earn the tips they get. The more dancers make, the bigger the tipout, etc. It makes sense in theory. However, it really boils down to management hassling dancers to work harder, hassling good dancers to work more shifts and stay longer and letting the everyone who walks through the door dance. For DJ's, there becomes an expectation that they deserve a tip, whether they did their job well or not, and a tendency to punish dancers who they deem to be bad tippers. Waitresses expect a tip for every little thing they do and don't want to bother with non tipped duties, like bussing tables.

And, with the exception of waitreses and bartenders (and even they bitch if they don't get inordinately huge tips from dancers sometimes,) it's expected for dancers to subsidize everyone else's wages, which sucks. I hear so many hourly employees bitching about how little they make and insisting that they should make as much as dancers do, because their job is so hard. I seriously want to make them grind on a fat guy that smells like puke, just so they can understand why dancers make so much money and they don't.

I believe in tipping DJ's fairly. If a DJ not only talks me up while I'm onstage while playing music I like, but also treats me with respect...they will be tipped accordingly. If a DJ doesn't help me out verbally onstage, constantly plays me crap, and is a pig/asshole...he gets tipped the required minimum no matter what I make (at our club it's a required $15 or 10% tipout; whichever is greater). The way I think of it is if you scratch my back, ill scratch yours. It's simple but some girls and DJ's don't get it.

I don't get the whole "if he plays me good music" thing. Every club I've worked at, you have your own music in your own folder, and if the dj were to play something else (especially something to embarrass you) he would be in trouble. For my small town and few customer club, the dj will never get more than $5-10 from me(always usually 10). He also doesn't care to pump up the crowd, answer my questions, and constantly plays my music for other girls.

Now even at my very large club, packed house and up-beat djs, i still don't give more than $10. That seems like so much to me.. Maybe because I was poor when I was young? Idk.

At my club we don't even see the dj all night. He is in his own separate room upstairs. He HAS to play good music for everyone. It's dumb if he played "bad" music. Ours is a really upscale club so we don't get lots of tips on stage, just champagne rooms and lap dances. I have been at smaller clubs where you do get to pick your songs and talk to the dj with no champagne rooms & I would tip better there.

DJ standards vary wildly. At my club, most of the DJ's will at least try to stick to a dancers genre and play appropriate music that she'll like. But, it's up to the DJ what gets played. If he wants to play gangsta rap for the girl who likes country, there's nothing she can do but bitch him out afterward. One DJ did that to me on a regular basis and it's gotten to a point where I won't work when he's in the booth. Mgmt hates it, because I always make them good money, but... they just won't get rid of him.

I always tip well because I'm always asking to be kept off stage rotation , added on when they're are big tippers, etc... I tip the DJ, my manager and the VIP waitress. And it's been well worth it because when I have a shit night the DJ doesn't care that I can't tip and will usually refuse to let me give any money. My manager lets me come in as late as I want and the waitress hooks me up with VIPs. That being said, if I generously tip someone and they don't hook me up then they will quickly see their tips decrease dramatically.

I've had so many douchebag DJs 'confront' me about tipping. One DJ was the manager also and after closing in front of other staff and dancers he asked where the rest of his tip was (not politely) even though I definitely had given him his fare share (I usually take the percentage from what they know I made plus a little more). I just grabbed some money and threw it at him and left. He was by far the most annoying DJ I've worked with. Most of the time all they do is click play and announce your name.. how does that equal a major tip at the end of the night?
