    Default Apple stock

Apple split 7 to 1 . You can buy in at 93 dollars a share. Thoughts? I was thinking of buying 30-40 shares.

    with usual disclaimers ...

Apple is a 'momo' ( momentum ) stock i.e. a darling of pension funds, mutual funds, limousine liberals etc. Much of the buying demand of late has been driven by these institutional investors rotating out of sectors in decline i.e. energy ( coal ) stocks, retail stocks, utility stocks etc.

Apple hasn't introduced a totally new product all year. Meanwhile, Android, Google etc. have !

A huge share of Apple's profits are attributable to offshore tax shelters, many of which are now under 'attack' by foreign governments.

Apple's share price is arguably significantly driven by 'buybacks' i.e. Apple Corp taking out loans ( using offshore profits as collateral ) with which to repurchase their own shares. Same or declining profits, but divided over many fewer open market shares outstanding, equals ( artificially inflated ) P/E ratio thus ( artificially inflated ) stock price.

Could this modus operandi continue into the future ? Sure it could !!! But Apple's 'fundamentals' arguably already lag the share price.

Great I bought 30 shares. Thoughts? Should I dump it when it goes up or keep it a while? I should of bought dollar general like I wanted it's up 10%. Yeah I'm looking into goggle fiber, Netflix, redbox and some others.

Yeah just had time to check these out. Redbox is out at almost 500 a share. Does google fiber trade separate from google? It was a tip I got. I wish I had invested in Teavanna when it's initial public offering was introduced. Fuck starbucks!

My intuition tells me Netflix stocks would be an excellent idea. The new series that they have been releasing in the past year are phenomenal! And the company just has access to sooooo much data on what consumers want/chose to watch that it seems they should definitely have a leg up on their competition for the time being...

there isn't any 'pure play' on Google Fiber ... it's a component of the overall business activities contributing to the overall performance of GOOG shares.

Ironically, what's good for Google Fiber is not so good for Apple ... because Google Fiber is configured to work with, and includes in it's fiber service bundle, Google's Nexus tablet PC's ... which creates additional indirect competition for Apple's IPad ! Yes there is now a Google Fiber app for the IPad ... but for Google Fiber customers the equation boils down to getting a 'free' Nexus tablet versus buying an IPad !

In regard to Netflix, much of the success of their business model relies on the present FCC 'net neutrality' rules ... which effectively forces low bandwidth internet customers to 'subsidize' Netflix and other high bandwidth internet customers via 'flat' monthly billing for internet service. The Courts have recently ruled this must end, opening the door for extra cost 'fast lane' service becoming necessary after the end of this year to be able to achieve HD video streaming. It remains to be seen whether these extra costs for 'fast lane' bandwidth will have to be paid by Netflix itself, by Netflix customers, or both ... It also remains to be seen whether Netflix can continue to grow its customer base if said customers must pay twice the monthly fee to Netflix, and/or must pay a premium to their local ISP for sufficient internet bandwidth to provide 'burpless' video streaming, next year.

In regard to Dollar General, the recent spike in their share price was arguably due to their efforts to 'buy out' competitor Family Dollar. However, this deal may head south in a big hurry ...

In regard to Redbox, their rising share price is the admitted result of the company having allocated $350 million for the express purpose of buying up its own shares. See . The question, of course, is what happens to Redbox's share price when that $350 million has all been spent !!!

Sony stock is FAR from a pure play on their game systems. It also includes business operations involving TV's and other consumer electronics ( subject to huge competition from south Korea and china ), music production ( subject to huge de-facto competition from free file sharing + 99c a song ITunes ), etc.

Sony is also subject to exchange rate volatility issues, since much of their sales are booked in Euros and Dollars but their profits are booked in Yen. This was a big plus while Shinzo Abe was deliberately printing money to devalue the Yen vs other currencies, but has recently stopped / arguably reversed after the Yen value went over 100 per US dollar. Think of it this way ... for US $100 worth of sales, last year Sony showed 80,000 Yen of revenues thus maybe 10,000 Yen in profits. But this year, the same US $100 sale yields 100,000 Yen of revenues thus maybe 20,000 Yen in profits, solely as the result of the exchange rate change. This fact has already been factored into the current price of Sony stock shares.

As to the 'dollar stores', indeed they are gaining market share as average American's declining after-tax incomes translates into an increasing inability to afford mid-level retailers like Penneys, Sears / KMart etc. Reuters had an opinion piece a while ago ... . However, their profit margins are relatively thin, thus potentially subject to 'attack' if minimum wage is increased, by new obamacare business taxes / costs. if energy costs increase, if the US dollar exchange rate declines in value ( opposite of Sony these 'dollar stores' buy product priced in Yuan, Won etc. and sell in US dollars, but book their profits in US dollars !!! ). Also, unlike major competitor WalMart, they don't have a significant internet presence for online sales, their retail outlets don't offer 'other services' ( prescriptions, financial services ) to help draw customers to those retail locations. And as the 'poor get even poorer', the 'dollar stores' are losing market share in home furnishings to RentACenter, Aarons etc.

Again, the recent ~10% runup in share prices stemmed from 'shotgun wedding' plans between Family Dollar and Dollar General ... which would have provided an opportunity to lower costs by purchasing in larger volumes, by integrating warehousing and distribution, by getting rid of some number of management and support employees, by keeping the best selling locations of both retailers while closing the worst selling locations etc. If this deal goes south, so will the share prices !!!

Yes, Apple now needs to resort to financial engineering to increase its earnings per share due to lack of other opportunities to invest in its growth. Already a $550 billion company, I don't see it being a trillion dollar company, or if it does double, I don't see it lasting as a trillion dollar company when inevitably its high profit margins are eroded through commoditization of its products. In the short-term (6 months to couple of years), Apple will probably drift higher along with the general market.

    A long-term wise decision, imho.
