    Default Diet Changes

I've been trying to eat better since the new year. I hate new years resolutions because it always seems that they fail! But I tried something different this year by rewarding myself for small goals.

First off instead of elimating soft drinks I just made a goal to cut back. I've done well on this.

Sandwiches, i eat a better whole wheat bread now instead of white bread! Also cutting back bread in general though.

I also do not eat processed meat as much anymore. I've gotten the healthy kind at whole foods. More expensive but actually taste better too.

Just curious what kinds of changes have you made diet wise..

getting rid of processed sugar/high fructose..or at least drastically cutting back. i replace it with honey or stevia when i can, or go without.

trying to avoid GMOs when possible and buying organic when it counts ..that gets expensive, but worth it i think.

a salad every night to every other night. lots of spinach, kale, turnips, cilantro etc. i never ate veggies much in the past but i've been really buckling down lately and i've actually developed a taste for a lot of veggies now

drinking lots of green & white tea, and pomegranate juice. having a glass of water every few hours..it's easy to get dehydrated and not know it!!

avoiding eating out as much..its a lot of money, and usually no the healthiest in most restaurants or fast food places.

that's not to say i don't love my haagen dasz vanilla ice cream and other little sweets. i just cut back more than usual.

-Cut down on carbs, which was only possible once I got on medication for my chronically low blood sugar.

-I eat more meat now, as I used to be a vegetarian. I'm still not very morally cool with meat/animal products, but it's currently what I need to do for my health. I also only eat red meat once a week tops. I've noticed it helps my digestion.

-I try to get some unflavored Greek yogurt in each day, usually in the form of a smoothie (kale, chia, greek yogurt, banana, tablespoon of some sort of nut butter, water). My stomach has always been all sorts of fucked, so my doctor said yogurt and/or acidophilus supplements will help.

-I drink two liters of water or more a day.

-I drink teas and coffees black. A lot of people gag when they see me drink anything black, but you really do get used to it, and it's so much healthier. I used to really like sweet tea (who in the south hasn't at some point?), but by the time I finished a glass of it, I felt sick. I started drinking it unsweetened, and I realized that I felt way better that way. The taste doesn't bother me at all. And as far as coffee goes, drinking it black allows you to taste the differences in the roasts. I couldn't go back to drinking it with cream and sugar, and I am someone who normally loves sweet shit.

-Dark chocolate only. Milk chocolate gives me migraines and shouldn't even be considered real chocolate.

-Less milk I really like milk, but my doctor said that milk and cereal is one of the worst combinations for blood sugar out there, since cereal is high in carbs and milk is usually sweetened. This ties into the black coffee thing, since I used to also like lattes.

-I drink alcohol wayyyyy less. I am really only able to accomplish this because I vomit almost every time I drink, even if I only have one drink. Yay horrible acid reflux! I would recommend it though. The drinking less thing, not the puking all the time nonsense.

-One dietary practice I'd also recommend is to jot down on your phone notepad or something what kind of meal you're having and why. I just started doing this because I am a mindless forager. Like, my friends ordered pizza the other day. I had once (big) piece because I was hungry and it smelled fucking good. I started to get a second piece, but I made myself write down that I knew I wasn't hungry and just wanted another piece because, y'know, nomnomnoms. I sulked and didn't have a second piece, but my pancreas thanked me.

As far as meat and vegetables go, I now spend a fair amount of time and effort growing my own quasi-organic vegetables ... as well as occasionally hunting deer, turkeys etc. ... as well as a fair amount of fishing. I also eat a lot of fresh fruit, which is everywhere down here way south of the border.

I also make my own multi-grain breads. In regard to 'healthy' cooking, I stick with honey, real butter and olive / canola oil as much as I can. Last night I was actually experimenting with making healthy 'spaghetti' out of zucchini squash ... it turned out very well, actually !

Agree on green tea, black coffee, and lots of water !!! Of course I also include a few margaritas, wines, and beers in the 'mix' ... in moderation ( with occasional glaring exceptions ! ).

I'm now a firm believer that it is the 'commercial processing' of foods that is the major 'culprit' toward unhealthy diets. Preservatives, colorings, insecticides, hormones, refined sugars and corn syrups, etc. are decidedly NOT natural !!! Thus I try to refrain from buying 'commercially processed' foods as much as I can ... and thus do a fair amount of 'old fashioned' preserving i.e. pressure canning, pickling etc.

Don't worry about branding. GMO foods are fine. Genetically modified foods have been around for thousands of years. There are ZERO world wide peer reviewed scientific studies that show that GMO's are bad or detrimental to your health. Literally 80% of the food found in grocery stores are genetically modified and you've been eating it your entire life. I really dislike when people spread fear over GMO's without doing the actual research.

If you want to eat better and cut out processed food I would stop drinking soda and go for straight up water. If you need a flavor, add some fruit slices or invest in a nice blender to make your own fruit smoothies. I also really like protein shakes in the morning for breakfast and for my workouts.

When getting deli meat, skip the packaged products (even those at whole foods, yes) and go straight to the butcher counter and get it sliced there. You're looking to avoid an ingredient called sodium nitrate, it's a salt solution that is injected into meat that helps preserve it. It's a known carcinogen and is not good for your body.

Even when you pick up whole wheat bread, look at the ingredients. Does it contain High Fructose Corn Syrup? Bleached flours? Artificial dyes? Put it back. You really need to start reading the list of ingredients before you put anything in your cart. I love this app for my iphone (it's also on android) called Fooducate. You scan a product and it tells you the list of ingredients while also giving it a letter grade from A to F on the quality of ingredients. It lets you know if a certain product contains high fructose corn syrup, xantham gum, certain dyes, sodium benzoate, etc, etc and what known carcinogens are in said product.

Try to avoid products that say "low fat" "healthy!" "enriched with vitamins!". You're better off purchasing full fat products, when a product says it has low fat or zero fat... Be wary. It means it's extra processed and when they remove the fat, they replace it with something that naturally should not be in there. Fat is NOT evil. Carbs are NOT evil. Your body and brain NEED fat to survive. Your brain feeds off of fat. Just make sure you're getting the healthy fats like from avocado, flax seed oil, olive oil, etc....

Avoid hydrolized oils, hydrogenated oils, partially hydrogenated oils. Hydrogenated oils = trans fats which are cancer causing. If you want milk or butter, or whatever. Don't do skim, don't do low fat. Get full fat. Or better yet, just avoid milk in general. Go for soy, almond, or coconut. There was a big scare over soy a few years ago linking it to high estrogen levels and saying it causes cancer... This is just a food myth. Soy doesn't cause cancer, eat all the tofu and soy products you want.

Just use your brain and do your research. Look into what trans fats are (and how companies can still add trans fat to your food if it's under .05 grams and label it as 0 which may not sound like a lot, but it is), research the process of how hydrogenated oils are created and what they do to your body, same with preservatives. Don't believe someone just because they say it's true.. Ask for their sources. If they say "I don't know" or "That's just what I've heard" then don't take their word for it!! Too many people just blindly listen to others without putting in the time and effort to see if it's true. Get your sources from unbiased outlets.

Also.... If you really want to eat something, do it. Just do so in moderation. Eating healthy doesn't mean you need to run on salad and lean chicken 24/7. Doing so will drive you insane. You want pizza? Order it! You want french fries? Get it! Just use good judgement and don't eat a whole pizza every other day. Not saying you do, but, people think that weight loss and eating right is something that is all or nothing and give up after eating pizza thinking they just wasted all that effort. No! Lol. I've lost 70 lbs already and I didn't do it by depriving myself. That is the number one reason people fail is by having that all or nothing mentality.

And you're going to trust what some random blogger says over...

American Association for the Advancement of Science: ”The science is quite clear: crop improvement by the modern molecular techniques of biotechnology is safe.” (http://bit.ly/11cR4sB)

American Medical Association: ”There is no scientific justification for special labeling of genetically modified foods. Bioengineered foods have been consumed for close to 20 years, and during that time, no overt consequences on human health have been reported and/or substantiated in the peer-reviewed literature.” (http://bit.ly/166OUdM)

World Health Organization: ”No effects on human health have been shown as a result of the consumption of GM foods by the general population in the countries where they have been approved.” (http://bit.ly/18yzzVI)

National Academy of Sciences: ”To date more than 98 million acres of genetically modified crops have been grown worldwide. No evidence of human health problems associated with the ingestion of these crops or resulting food products have been identified.” (http://bit.ly/13Cib0Y)

The Royal Society of Medicine: ”Foods derived from GM crops have been consumed by hundreds of millions of people across the world for more than 15 years, with no reported ill effects (or legal cases related to human health), despite many of the consumers coming from that most litigious of countries, the USA.” (http://1.usa.gov/12huL7Z)

The European Commission: ”The main conclusion to be drawn from the efforts of more than 130 research projects, covering a period of more than 25 years of research, and involving more than 500 independent research groups, is that biotechnology, and in particular GMOs, are no more risky than e.g. conventional plant breeding technologies.” (http://bit.ly/133BoZW)

American Council on Science and Health: ”[W]ith the continuing accumulation of evidence of safety and efficiency, and the complete absence of any evidence of harm to the public or the environment, more and more consumers are becoming as comfortable with agricultural biotechnology as they are with medical biotechnology.” (http://bit.ly/12hvoyg)

American Dietetic Association: ”It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that agricultural and food biotechnology techniques can enhance the quality, safety, nutritional value, and variety of food available for human consumption and increase the efficiency of food production, food processing, food distribution, and environmental and waste management.” (http://1.usa.gov/12hvWnE)

American Phytopathological Society: ”The American Phytopathological Society (APS), which represents approximately 5,000 scientists who work with plant pathogens, the diseases they cause, and ways of controlling them, supports biotechnology as a means for improving plant health, food safety, and sustainable growth in plant productivity.” (http://bit.ly/14Ft4RL)

American Society for Cell Biology: ”Far from presenting a threat to the public health, GM crops in many cases improve it. The ASCB vigorously supports research and development in the area of genetically engineered organisms, including the development of genetically modified (GM) crop plants.” (http://bit.ly/163sWdL)

American Society for Microbiology: ”The ASM is not aware of any acceptable evidence that food produced with biotechnology and subject to FDA oversight constitutes high risk or is unsafe. We are sufficiently convinced to assure the public that plant varieties and products created with biotechnology have the potential of improved nutrition, better taste and longer shelf-life.” (http://bit.ly/13Cl2ak)

American Society of Plant Biologists: ”The risks of unintended consequences of this type of gene transfer are comparable to the random mixing of genes that occurs during classical breeding… The ASPB believes strongly that, with continued responsible regulation and oversight, GE will bring many significant health and environmental benefits to the world and its people.” (http://bit.ly/13bLJiR)

International Seed Federation: ”The development of GM crops has benefited farmers, consumers and the environment… Today, data shows that GM crops and foods are as safe as their conventional counterparts: millions of hectares worldwide have been cultivated with GM crops and billions of people have eaten GM foods without any documented harmful effect on human health or the environment.” (http://bit.ly/138rZLW)

Council for Agricultural Science and Technology: ”Over the last decade, 8.5 million farmers have grown transgenic varieties of crops on more than 1 billion acres of farmland in 17 countries. These crops have been consumed by humans and animals in most countries. Transgenic crops on the market today are as safe to eat as their conventional counterparts, and likely more so given the greater regulatory scrutiny to which they are exposed.” (http://bit.ly/11cTKq9)

Crop Science Society of America: ”The Crop Science Society of America supports education and research in all aspects of crop production, including the judicious application of biotechnology.” (http://bit.ly/138sQMB)

International Society of African Scientists: ”Africa and the Caribbean cannot afford to be left further behind in acquiring the uses and benefits of this new agricultural revolution.” (http://bit.ly/14Fp1oK)

Federation of Animal Science Societies: ”Meat, milk and eggs from livestock and poultry consuming biotech feeds are safe for human consumption.” (http://bit.ly/133F79K)

Society for In Vitro Biology: ”The SIVB supports the current science-based approach for the evaluation and regulation of genetically engineered crops. The SIVB supports the need for easy public access to available information on the safety of genetically modified crop products. In addition, the SIVB feels that foods from genetically modified crops, which are determined to be substantially equivalent to those made from crops, do not require mandatory labeling.” (http://bit.ly/18yFDxo)

Consensus document on GMOs Safety (14 Italian scientific societies): ”GMOs on the market today, having successfully passed all the tests and procedures necessary to authorization, are to be considered, on the basis of current knowledge, safe to use for human and animal consumption.” (http://bit.ly/166WHYZ)

Society of Toxicology: ”Scientific analysis indicates that the process of GM food production is unlikely to lead to hazards of a different nature than those already familiar to toxicologists. The level of safety of current GM foods to consumers appears to be equivalent to that of traditional foods.” (http://bit.ly/13bOaSt)

“Transgenic Plants and World Agriculture” - Prepared by the Royal Society of London, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Indian National Science Academy, the Mexican Academy of Sciences, and the Third World Academy of Sciences:“Foods can be produced through the use of GM technology that are more nutritious, stable in storage, and in principle health promoting – bringing benefits to consumers in both industrialized and developing nations.” (http://bit.ly/17Cliq5)

French Academy of Science: ”All criticisms against GMOs can be largely rejected on strictly scientific criteria.” (http://bit.ly/15Hm3wO)

Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities: ”Food derived from GM plants approved in the EU and the US poses no risks greater than those from the corresponding conventional food. On the contrary, in some cases food from GM plants appears to be superior with respect to health.” (http://bit.ly/17ClMMF)

When the preponderance of evidence is that strong, there comes a point when it is no longer logical to say otherwise in the face of cold hard data.

If you can show me a credible, scientific peer reviewed study that says genetically modified foods cause cancer, disease, or make you sick then I'll listen. Until then... No. I went to that page and the blogger in question just cites other bloggers. Where are they getting this information, out their ass??

Warning, expletives ahead.. But I highly suggest watching this video. Although he is very colorful, the data is there. Monsanto GMOs, GMOs in general are NOT proven to be harmful. And this is with over TWENTY YEARS of international study.

Another good one with less expletives and more science. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUzVm-zpyR8 <3 that dudes channel, lol.

lol, " a random blogger". what she said was true. she also isn't in monsanto's pocket. studies done in rats..it melted their stomachs. it also causes infertility. they have even admitted it. i highly suggest you do more research. but, hey, go ahead and eat what you want. monsanto serves all organic in their headquarter's kitchens..hmm i wonder why? and heavy pesticides are the reason the bee population is dying off

This is accurate. Organic foods are better for the environment, they are NOT healthier for the body.

how is organic not healthier for your body? do you think pesticides are good for your body? its not that organic has anything in it that's better, its what it DOESN'T have in it that's better for your body.

personally this is not something I care that much about, I once read an article from cnn about it. But via a quick google search, Mayo Clinic says "probably not"

This's a great thread..I try to eat well, with a few exceptions..I love fresh fruit/veggies & I try to get organic whenever I can. So expensive though, for such small amounts (usually black/blue berries, etc)

You do realize that the study on rats fed GMO foods is not only one of the most debunked experiments on GMO's, but in science and food studies in general?

Again, your "proof" are blogs and non profit organizations. You have yet to link a credible, scientific study that has said GMO's are dangerous.

"One immediate problem, Newell-McGloughlin said, is that the line of rodents used in the study, known as Sprague-Dawley rats, are frequently used in cancer research because a large majority of them naturally develop tumors at a high rate, regardless of what they eat or how they're raised.

What's more, the rats were allowed to eat an unlimited amount of food, which increases their chances of developing tumors. And two is a very old age for these rats, which could account for the large rate of cancer seen across all groups, including the controls.

The small size of the control group also raised red flags. Even experienced scientists in the field had trouble interpreting data in the study, as seen in comments collected by the UK's Science Media Center, but it appears that the study included just 10 or 20 control animals.

That means there were at least nine times more test animals than control animals. If anything, studies of this kind usually include two or three times more controls than experimental animals.

The results don't make a lot of sense, either. No matter how much of either herbicide-laden or genetically modified maize the rats ate in proportion to their other food, rates of cancer and premature death remained the same. However, to be meaningful, toxicology studies like this should show a dose-dependent response, which means that if something is toxic, more of it should be more toxic.

Looking at the data, it appears that the study authors never tested their results to see if the numbers they turned up could have occurred by random chance, said David Tribe, a microbiologist at the University of Melbourne in Australia. And given the small numbers of animals used in the study, that's a real possibility."

    As for the "10 studies"

    1. Toxins found in pregnant women. Debunked. http://www.snopes.com/food/tainted/monsantocorn.asp

    2. Dna transfer to humans who eat GMO foods. Debunked. http://scienceblogs.com/denialism/20...d-their-ranks/ (It's a blog but if you check the link he cites back to legitimate scientific data)

    3. Gmo linked to gluten disorders. Debunked. http://celiacdisease.about.com/od/ce...fied-Wheat.htm

    4. GMO corn and rat tumors. Already posted about that.

    5. "Glyphosate Induces Human Breast Cancer Cells Growth" Glyphosate is an ingredient found in nearly all herbicides. It does have cancer causing properties but this is only if you are in near constant contact with the chemical. You won't have an increased risk of cancer by eating GMO foods, or even eating non organic food. Rinse your fruits and vegetables. Don't guzzle herbicide and you'll be fine. http://jnci.oxfordjournals.org/conte.../1866.abstract

    6. Glyphosate linked to birth defects. Please read above and do your research. Herbicides and pesticides have been linked to birth defects and certain strains of cancer. This does not mean you'll get cancer eating non organic/GMO foods. This is if you are in CONSTANT contact with those chemicals.

7-8. Same exact thing. Glyphosate in pesticides and herbicides is to blame, not the GMO/non organic foods. Don't bathe in it and you'll be fine.

    9. "Studies Link GMO Animal Feed to Severe Stomach Inflammation and Enlarged Uteri in Pigs" Nope. http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/20...ent-revisited/

    10. " GMO risk assessment is based on very little scientific evidence in the sense that the testing methods recommended are not adequate to ensure safety. " Studies have been conducted all over the globe on GMO foods for the last 20 years. Billions of people have consumed GMOs during this time and will continue to consume them. As I quote from earlier, there have been ZERO credible, scientific, peer reviewed studies that have shown GMO products to be dangerous for human consumption. Zero. In 20 years. In experiments world wide.

If you want the real information on GMOs I would suggest moving away from the publicly funded blogs and go for actual, credible news sources. The blogs I linked above, link back to studies debunking the original myth and also link back to peer reviewed experiments. It didn't take long at all to bust each and every one of those so called studies.

Do you know how genetically modified food works....? They are not injecting poisons or toxins into the foods. You take a seed and either remove or add genes to the plants genome.

"Genetically engineered plants are generated in a laboratory by altering their genetic makeup and are tested in the laboratory for desired qualities. This is usually done by adding one or more genes to a plant's genome using genetic engineering techniques. Most genetically modified plants can be modified in a directed way by gene addition (cloning) or gene subtraction (genes are removed or inactivated). Plants are now engineered for insect resistance, fungal resistance, viral resistance, herbicide resistance, changed nutritional content, improved taste, and improved storage.

Once satisfactory plants are produced, sufficient seeds are gathered, and the companies producing the seed need to apply for regulatory approval to field-test the seeds. If these field tests are successful, the company must seek regulatory approval for the crop to be marketed (see Regulation of the release of genetic modified organisms). Once that approval is obtained, the seeds are mass-produced, and sold to farmers."

Idk, you may find this useful if you want to learn more about GMO/genetically modified foods. While I get wikipedia may not be the most reputable source because "people can add all sorts of information anytime they want and it could be wrong!11!!" they have staff on the site constantly monitoring it. Also, I find the references on the bottom to be highly useful and link to the original, credible source.

monsanto puts the toxin into it at the cellular level so it produces its own pesticide that's embedded into micro RNA. it tells your body to start producing it as well. it was published in "cell research" one of the leading genetic experts in 2011.
the FDA is controlled by monsanto's legal dept. monsanto is allowed to do their own testing in their own labs!!! and "investigate themselves" and then put out bullshit studies to convince people their food is all rainbows and sunshine. those "credible studies" are really not all that credible
i've done a lot of research on this. don't assume that i am "ignorant" because i don't agree with your opinion

and as for saying the rat study was bogus, here's what really happened " Dr. Pusztai, a highly respected leader in the field with 35 years employment at the Rowett Institute in Scotland, had been given a UK government grant to design the long-term testing protocols that were supposed to be part of the European GM food safety assessment process. When Pusztai fed rats GM potatoes genetically engineered to produce a supposedly safe insecticide called the GNA lectin, all the animals showed potentially pre-cancerous cell growths, smaller brains, livers and testicles, partially atrophied livers, and damaged to the immune system–with most changes appearing after just 10 days.
Since other rats fed normal potatoes spiked with GNA lectin–even 700 times more GNA lectin than was present in the GM potatoes–did not develop these problems, Pusztai’s results indicated that the problem lay with genetic engineering process itself. And that meant that all GM foods created from the same process, including those already on the market, might produce unintended ill effects.
According to Pusztai, when he expressed his concerns, he was fired and threatened with a lawsuit if he discussed his research. His 20-member research team was disbanded; the testing protocols were dropped, and a campaign was begun by pro-GM forces to discredit the study."

All I know is that organic milk tasted curiously better with the Oreos I shamelessly gorged on last night, food diary be damned...

One other change I've recently made is that I drink more matcha green tea, rather than the traditional brew. It supposedly has far more of the benefits associated with green tea because you are ingesting the actual ground up leaf. I found mine at Whole Foods. My friend says she needs honey in hers to stand the taste, but I think it just tastes like a stronger green tea. *shrug* If you don't prepare it the traditional way, like with a tea whisk, it can be a little powdery, but it's not bad. I imagine it would taste good in a smoothie too...
