Default Who goes to the gym?

I'm looking to join a gym soon. I'd prefer a monthly membership because I tend to move around a bit but I do know there are some national gym chains out there and was curious as to if anybody on here was a member of on.

It's been awhile since I have been at a gym. So a few questions and opinions would be awesome.

Do you prefer Co Ed or all womens gym?

What do you pay for a monthly fee?

Any extra fees outside of monthly?

What kinda gym attire do you wear? Is it common to wear leggings? I'm not a fan of gym shorts.

^^^ after dealing with way too many testosterone soaked 'jocks', and way too many 'catty' girls, I invested in my own home gym equipment !!! At this point, I'm definitely money ahead on the deal ... in addition to saving time formerly wasted 'getting ready' to go to the gym, and actually driving there and back !!!

I just started recently! I go to Planet Fitness because it is literally right next door, like I just walk there. Plus it's pretty much 24 hours, which is nice. I have the premium membership which is 20 a month, normal membership is 10. The best perk for me is I can bring a guest an unlimited number of times. When I signed up there was an extra fee, I think it was an annual fee, but I don't remember how much it was.
Personally, all things being equal I would prefer a woman-only gym, but I can't beat the convenience of a 3 minute walk.

ETA: I didn't see the attire question. I wear spandex shorts and either a t-shirt or a tank top. I don't see why you couldn't wear leggings. I remember that news story where that lady was kicked out of a Planet Fitness because they thought her outfit was too revealing, but no one has ever said anything to me and I see other people similarly dressed.

I use my apartment gym/my boyfriend has a nice weight set at his place. But, if I were to look into going to an actual gym I'd pick a co-ed. Womens only gyms tend to have entirely too many cardio machines and not enough weights machines, or their free weights only go up to a certain amount. I know if I pick a gym that a lot of uber-buff dudes go to then I'm going to get a great workout in.

But, it also depends on what you do. I do a mix of weight training and cardio so that suits me. I just wear shorts, yoga shorts, yoga pants or leggings with like a tee shirt or a tank top. Also if you are going to get into weight training (which I really would recommend everyone do because it's a much better workout than cardio) then you should invest in some fingerless gloves so you don't get calluses on your hands.

Yep, it's totally normal to wear leggings! In fact, I usually wear leggings and a regular cotton tee. I definitely do not have any adorable fancy workout clothes.

I would lift for a few weeks before investing in gloves. My feet callus so easily, but even with lifting and playing on my pole every day, I have zero calluses on my hands.

An Anytime Fitness recently opened in my neighborhood and I plan on joining soon. Does anyone have experience with that chain? I'll post a report once I actually do sign up/start going. Maybe next week? I've belonged to a gym in the past (not a chain one), but it's been a few years. Right now I'm trying to fix my work/sleep schedule and cut way back on my drinking (been bad lately) so that I'll actually have the time and energy to work out frequently enough to see a difference.

To try to answer your questions, the gym I used to go to was $74.12 a month, plus a hefty sign-up fee (I forget how much, maybe $200?). I'm never paying that much for a gym again. That one was co-ed, as is the one I'll probably start using soon. I don't think my city has a women-only gym. I can't imagine anyone caring about shorts vs leggings. I usually wore dollar store gym shorts and one of my then-husband's t-shirts.

I go to LA fitness and I LOVE it -- in my area (Inland Empire/San Gabriel Valley CA) almost every location is extremely clean, new equipment, different types of classes offered, swimming pool, spa & sauna. Only downside is they aren't open past 11 or midnight usually. I paid a 3 year membership up front and it calculated to ~$17/month with no fees. I buy all my gym clothes at cheapo shops that sell tanks for $3 as I'm gonna sweat crazy in it and ruin it anyway.

I'm told from different staff that the best time to sign up for a membership is around the 2nd Thursday of the month bc that's when the best deals are offered

Co-ed. Too much estrogen would drive me insane. Usually a moot point with me since I go to the gym at 3 am.

Did the prepaid $100 for the year at PF.
Any extra fees outside of monthly?
    Nope.

Whatever makes me look as unattractive and is functional. I did wear shorts and a beater in the past but due to several instances where some elderly members were almost injured staring at me I have started wearing more discreet attire short of a burqua.

Do you prefer Co Ed or all womens gym? Coed. Women's only don't seem to have the options that coed do. I like having an indoor pool.

What do you pay for a monthly fee? I am a member of the YMCA, it's $45.00/month for me and my daughter. Also, I get discounts on summer camps for my daughter. She's at a sailing camp next week that would ordinarily be $1,000+, but I get it for only $450 because I'm a member.

Any extra fees outside of monthly? Summer camps for the kid is extra. Swimming lessons are extra. Swim team is extra. All discounted because I have a family membership, still extra.

What kinda gym attire do you wear? Is it common to wear leggings? I'm not a fan of gym shorts? I wear running shorts, sport bra and a singlet if I am using the machines or taking a class. In the winter, I usually wear a sweatshirt. For swimming, I wear a one piece racing suit. I've seen lots of people wearing leggings. That's what I wear when I run in the winter. For summer running, I wear compression shorts, sport bra and a singlet. I have a running suit that is basically a sport bra and compression shorts, which I think is about too sexy for track and field. But, I see lots of high school girls wearing the same thing on the track.

Definitely Co-ed. I get along with burly jock guys for the most part, and when I need a spotter most women can't handle the weight (I'm a little unusual tho, into weightlifting). $44 a month, no extra fees, also a YMCA. I wear whatever is functional for the workout and how I feel. Sometimes its a revealing sports bra and yoga shorts, sometimes a baggy tee and capris, just whatever. Target has decent workout attire, you don't have to go all out w Lululemon.

I've been a member of LA Fitness for 3 years.

My husband and I pay a yearly fee. Ours is really low because we were members of Bally's who LA Fitness bought out.

It depends on what I'm doing: I wear leggings or yoga pants for, well, yoga class. If I'm using the class room for contortion stretching or working out dance stuff: Baggy Nike sweat pants, sports bra with either a cropped tee or a loose tank. Leg warmers also if I'm working on over splits. Sketcher shoes because they are comfy and bouncy, Nike wraps for yoga & dance. For weights & cardio, I'm pretty much in Nike stuff.

At my dance/pole studio it's $100 a month, $15 extra if you want to rent a pole for practice. Usually wear Nike wear to warm up, then booty shorts and bra. Usually no shoes.

Definitely go with a monthly membership. I am currently paying nearly £200 monthly because I am a member of 2 gyms, they wouldn't let me cancel when I moved because you can only cancel if there is no gym of theirs within 5 miles.

I dont mind a Co Ed gym here in the UK because men here aren't very aggressive, but I have very bad memories from other countries. While living in Israel I only went to the gym in the middle of the night because it was unbearable during the day, I wouldnt be left alone. So it depends on where you live...if there is a Womens only I'd go there probably.

My first gym costs £100 per month but it is truly amazing, its not just a gym its a HUGE club with tennis courts, swimming pool inside and outside, beauty salon, restaurant with great food and they have lots of kids activities so its perfect to go with my daughter, she can do her classes when I do my workouts. Unfortunately this gym is now an hour from my house so I can only go once a week or so like a daytrip. My other gym is £75 and its great too, and 15 sec from my house.

    No other fees.

I always wear leggins (running ones) and a sports top, it's all quite tight but I don't show much skin. I think its nice to have nice workout clothes, it motivates me to go more!

I couldnt be without a gym, I love it.

Sounds awesome! You're making me want to look into it again. Although I may just join a pool only for the summer!

Home gym is the best. You get regular workouts at the greatest convenience, which increases your discipline, saves you gas and time.

For some people. I'd be bored out of my mind working out alone at home.

I need to go Back but for me it's out of my budget so I stick to work out videos from home. I also shoot archery, belly dance, play on a local rugby team and practice martial arts lol so I guess I keep in shape for the most part

I would go with 24 Hour Fitness if I were you. It's usually about $45 a month, but they have lots of cool discounts and deals throughout the year. There are no extra fees, unless you want to take a special class or rent a locker. Most of their group classes are free, and super fun. I prefer co-ed gyms because the guys can be pretty entertaining, and also motivating if they're equally entertained by you. You can wear pretty much anything you want to the gym, as long as it's comfortable, and you're wearing tennis shoes or trainers. Have fun!

You mean you never start working out only to find yourself naked and reading a magazine 20 minutes later? I have weights and equipment at my place, but it is a serious struggle for me to stay with it for more than a few sets. I work out more consistently when I make myself drive eleven miles to the gym!

I have been to every type gym: From the luxury to the barest bones where it's mostly guys and smells like body odor, eww!!

Here's the thing: It's not what the gym looks like, it's what you do in the gym that makes the difference:-)

I work out at home sometimes too. But my place is small and no floor to ceiling mirrors. (Hey, I want to see my progress:-)
