Smiley What type (not brand) of pole is the best?

In a few weeks, I'll be moving to a new house (not apartment, not trailer but actual house) and will be getting a pole.

What material is the best? Stainles steel, titanium, chrome, brass, or a combination?

A stand alone pole (a pole mounted on a platform) or a ceiling pole?

Inside (eg. Garage, room) or outside?

Three things I know: I'm getting a known brand (either X pole, Lil Mynx or Platinum Stages), 50mm, and static/spinning.

Will you be changing clubs? If not I would just try to match it to the pole of your current one if you want to stay long term, otherwise check out the poles at whatever new club you like most and and match it unless they have a totally shitty one. Switching pole types after mastering a trick at home can reduce your ability to show it off where it counts most.

^^I'm somewhat retired and if I decide to come back, all clubs in the area have spinning poles. They're in deplorable conditions because almost nobody bothers with them.

Second, during my active periods, I've always danced at multiple clubs: I've never been a one club type of gal.

I built my pole from parts at Home Depot. It is galvanized steel clear coated in polyurethane. I'm in an apartment, so it is temporarily mounted using only a few screws into the ceiling joists. I used short screws in the base to stabilize the pole into the carpet. My sub floor is concrete, so I had to measure carefully or else I'd have screws sticking up on the base. The whole thing cost me about $80.

Even though I coated the pole in polyurethane, the galvanized steel is harder to work on than brass, chrome or stainless steel. On the plus side, this makes me a much better climber at work. My ability to hang on to the pole at work (we have brass) is improving a lot!

I have a powder coated stainless steel semi-permanent static pole. It screws into a ceiling beam at the top, then twists to elongate for a pressure mount with a non-skid pad on my hardwood floor.

    Pros:
Grip is similar, but not identical, to brass
^ Not as slippery as stainless steel or chrome
It's extremely solid and sturdy, more so than the poles at my clubs
The only marks it leaves are a nail hole and a two-inch dent (but I have a "soft" plaster ceiling so ymmv)
No platform, so I can transition from the pole to floor work exactly as I would in the club

    Cons:
Powder coating doesn't transfer heat or slide well. It can get painfully hot (think rug burn) if I slide more than a few feet. My skin Saran Wrap sticks to it if I'm sweaty
Powder coating only comes in ugly colors IMO unless you want to shell out $$ for custom

All in all, I love my pole. I keep it in the center of my living room in front of my Victorian velvet settee.

I see you said "not the brand" but for reference's sake, it's a Lil Mynx. They were 110% friendly and helpful to me. I had a bunch of shipping issues and stupid questions but they stayed pleasant, flexible, and patient the whole time.

How much of a challenge do you want in your pole? Do you want to have to work hard to nail tricks (stainless steel / chrome)? Or do you want to be able to jump on the pole and do cool tricks right off the bat (brass or powder-coated)?

That sounds both smart AND cheap!

-I had used powder coated Lil Mynx in studios before: I love their grip and how sturdy they are, but that burning sensation is quite unpleasant. Also, I wonder how long that coating will last.

    Hmmm, good questions:

-I'm resuming pole dancing from scratch, for I haven't done any pole work in over a year: so I may consider stainless steel or chrome.

-Despite brass is the best I had used, it's also a PITA to maintain.

^ I use my pole almost every day. It's been about ten months and I can't find any scratches, chips or worn spots in the coating. It does have some tiny areas that look a little wavy, like ripples in water? But that was only something I noticed when I was cleaning really thoroughly one afternoon.

If you build one, too, you have to tell us all about it!

I've got a 50mm titanium gold. I LOVE the grip on it, feels like not too much, not too little. As for stand alone or screw in, it's partly limited by your ceiling height. Also how much you really want to be putting it up & taking it down or leaving it up. It's awesome having one at home- you're going to love it!

Whatever you decide to get, have you considered the use of grip aids? My pole was chrome and too slippery so I used liquid chalk/dry hands when I wanted to practice and they worked well.

Is polyurethane water resistant? Well, I'll google that.

Is that an X-pole? Would you, please, tell me more about that brand? I intend to have it in the garage and maybe a second one in the backyard.

Maybe gloves, but only for long stretches of time. I doubt I'd use anything for quick 20 minute workouts.

50mm is good if you only want to work in clubs. But 45mm is standard for competitions.

I have big and muscular thighs, a 45mm doesn't provide me with enough support when I'm hands-free, and I have big hands as well.

^ I'm so jealous! I wish I had bigger hands. I'm so nervous about landing handsprings or extended anything on a 50mm. Especially in a club when the pole is not completely clean because I'm afraid of my hands slipping and won't be able to re-grip. I have a 50mm at home too.

Mine is a x pole (an xpert I think it's called..) It looks like they changed the design recently of how the poles are built & it was easy enough to install, very easy to switch from static to spin. Chrome & ss seem pretty slick. Powder coated & brass seem most grippy. Titanium gold seemed right in the middle. (oh I'm telling the story of the three bears now aren't I?)

    UPDATE:

I found an X-pole (xpert) on the local craigslist, and is 50mm. It's chrome, thought. I would've prefered titanium, but at least is not SS.
