Default So my club just banned smoking....

And I have a feeling our business is going to drop drastically. It's a really run down dive, bad neighborhood. really sketchy parking lot. No patio reserved for smokers, unlike the other competitor strip club in town, and Im not really sure what to do. The club itself really didn't ban it per say, but a new city ordinance was passed saying no cigs, cigars, vapes, nothing.
I've heard of business declining after such things were passed in other states. Is there any way to overcome this or should I just travel out of city limits to dance from now on?
Also, I feel very unsafe going out into that parking lot to smoke by myself, so I might just quit smoking cigs tbh.
Pros: no smoke smell to stick to my clothing and hair, no losing my voice at work from all the cigar smoke around me, the club smells better in general
Cons: customers leaving, having to get dressed every time I want to light up a cig, smoking in that shady parking lot.... can't think of any more.

EDIT: just found out there will be a two year grace period, it is not going into immediate effect. Thankfully.
But did a club going nonsmoking lead to a huge exodus of business or did it generally not affect things in the long run?

at first it seemed to, but up here (NJ) i think the smoking ban coinciding with the market crash. eventually people got used to it and now HATE the smell of smoke, and appreciate it not being indoors (business went back to somewhat normal… though not totally because of the economy). also, vaporizers are becoming big business, and people (as far as i know) can smoke them indoors. previous smokers love them, provided they're REAL vaporizers (not those cheap e cigs) that have a real "pull" to them. i would suggest this to your clientele if they insist on smoking indoors.

Obviously, don't risk your job, but if you think you could get away with this... In one non-smoking club I worked in, a dancer made a killing bringing guys into VIP by letting them using her vaporizer there. So just, you know, if you're still working there in two years, it won't be the end of all the money. Crafty dancers always think of stuff.

technically vaporizers are also banned but everyone does it anyway.

Ok thanks, I was kind of worried but after reading kind of extensively through older threads I kind of figured it might slow down at first but people can't avoid going out forever. I knew it wouldn't affect a large city too much but my town is pretty small.

Our club owner/manager would have groups of dancers taken outside with a bouncer once an hour while they were building the beer garden. (The beer garden has an alarmed fire exit and the door going to the club has a camera on it at all times) At the other club in town they have a smoking area behind the club dancers can go to whenever they want, but they are out there alone with customers and the area opens up to the alley.... Ya it sucks to ask permission to go out for a smoke, but I prefer our set up because I'm a very paranoid person. Our county enacted a ban a few years ago. All the surrounding areas had existing smoking bans, so the decline wasn't that bad. It was more of a decline because we lost the customers coming from across the state line so they could smoke indoors. Once people got over the first couple of months of refusing to go to bars because of the ban, it all went back to normal.

In my experience, much depends on the general smoking 'meme' of your particular city. When NY first banned smoking quite a few years ago, club customers responded by spending less time in the clubs ( escaping to the street to grab a smoke after 60-90 minutes ) ... which also reduced total customer dollar spending. However, several years later, the 'meme' has changed where fewer club customers are still outright smokers. Plus a few clubs use 'secret' smoking as an additional VIP room sales tool.

In another city, though, despite the city passing a smoking ban a couple of years ago, a whole bunch of customers remained dedicated smokers. This gave a HUGE advantage to one particular club that was a block outside the city limits which could still allow smoking, versus all of the other clubs in town which could not. Ultimately, the beyond city jurisdiction club nearly doubled the number of previous customers, with every club within city jurisdiction losing 15-20% of previous customers.

Ultimately, this is about both customer numbers, as well as about average spending per customer. IMHO anti-smoking laws are initially bad for both. But after a period of years, the non-smoking 'new normal' sets in ... with a few ( still smoking ) customers being permanently lost, but with the majority of remaining non-smoking club customers no longer 'bailing' after 60-90 minutes thus allowing per-customer spending to return to 'normal' levels.

My city went non smoking before the whole state did. It was a little rough, and some neighborhood watering holes went out of business due to the new ordinance. Now the whole state is non smoking and every bar has a smoking patio that is basically some kind of enclosed and heated sun porch. I work day shift, and it's kind of nice to just sit outside for a while during the slow parts of the shift on nice days or to enjoy a big rainstorm while sitting next to the fire pit on the club's patio.

I also found it a lot easier to quit smoking after the club became non smoking. I don't know that I could have been able to quit while still working if the club still allowed indoor smoking.

It's great to not come home smelling like smoke. We have a lot better level customers these days, too. Men who are married and don't want to get caught hanging out at strip clubs are much more likely to come into a non-smoking place.

Overall, I've found the change is good for business. It took a while for everyone to adjust to the change.

I work in a city where smoking isn't allowed in any building. Except in the most expensive VIP room in our club and I have no clue how they got around that rule.. I'm an ex-smoker so I really like not smelling like I rolled in an ash tray but if there is a 2 year grace period you should be okay... Maybe the club can work out something with the city to make a VIP room where smoking is allowed. There are guys who will definitely pay for that if it means they can smoke inside and be comfortable.

TBH I feel like smoking bans in states/cities killed ALL the night clubs a bit. Before the smoking ban all the clubs I went to were wall to wall packed every weekend.. Restaurants too. When I go visit my family in E. Europe, even in the small towns the clubs are packed because people can smoke indoors. Once the smoking ban came to the city I live in here the nightclub scene is not what it used to be. Kind of sad.

I was dancing when the smoking ban came into effect in the UK and as Melonie says - there is a period of adjustment before the new normal sets in but as Tourdefranzia says - it also encourages other customers to come spend time too so try not to worry too much.

Personally, I really enjoyed not coming home smelling of smoke and as a non smoker i took advantage of the fact that other girls were going out for smoke breaks as it means regular temporary reductions in other dancers on the floor.

Generally speaking, there is indeed a relatively small number of former customers who are dedicated enough to their smoking that they will either seek out more distant clubs / bars / restaurants etc where they can still smoke, or they will find other 'substitutes' i.e. private parties. Either way these customers will be 'permanently' lost. And, for better or worse, these dedicated smokers also tended to be better than average spenders and tippers. Granted that a smoke free environment may also attract new customers ... but in general I agree with your assessment that the no smoking 'new normal' involves somewhat fewer overall customers and notably lower overall customer spending.
