    Default Local or General Anaesthetic

Okay so after about ten consultations and a year's deliberation I *think* I have decided to go with MYA (I'm in the UK) given that they were the only company to responsibly replace PIP implants when that happened, and that they've done a lot of celebs. They've given me three surgeons to choose from to have a look at, I'm under no obligation as yet.

I am so nervous of being put under, and I told her this and she offered me local anaesthetic with sedation, as an alternative. I'd just about talked myself into being okay about a general, and now I have a decision to make and It's just made it all more difficult!Aargh.

I've been looking at the MYA forum and a few girls have had sedation, said sedation was fine, but most girls I know had it under general. I'm just not sure. My Mother has told me if she could in any way avoid a general she would, as it makes you feel so unwell afterwards, and because of the risks of it.

I've never had a general..I AM scared of it, but I don't think I am any LESS scared of local to be honest. The thought of someone chopping away at me whilst I am just in a daze and not fully unconscious terrifies me, but then I spoke to the girl on reception who had it done that way and she said it was fine, she drifted in and out of sleep, couldn't feel anything and wasn't really aware of what was going on. Obviously in a general, you're completely out of it.

    What does anybody think?

I had general for my BA and sedation/local for my wisdom teeth. Totally different operations, but I was completely unaware of what was going on when I had my wisdom teeth out. They told me to bring a CD player (long time ago) and when they woke me up I couldn't figure out if the album had looped around or if they really finished it by the third song (obviously I was pretty out of it). There was definitely a hangover but it was gone by the end of the day.

Because of this and my horrible fear of anesthetic awareness I asked my surgeon if I could have the twilight anesthesia again for my BA. He said I definitely would want general for what that's worth to you. My experience was basically an extra long blink and then some confusion when I woke up. The after effects were fairly intense, though. I was an idiot for a couple of days, and it definitely wasn't just because of the pain pills. I also gained 10 lbs overnight, and although it's impossible to say how much was from the IV vs. the anesthesia, the anesthesia definitely contributes to that. I still have a little bloat a week later -- it's definitely not weight gain from inactivity because I've been watching my calories like a hawk during my recovery.

Hope this helps and good luck with your surgery! Keep us updated.

Thank you,Whirlerz! I'll mark my place here before I have it done.

Thank you, lol1337...I am going to half (or more!)my calorie intake during recovery.

It's because I have never had GA before. I feel as if my body just won't get through it!
What do you mean you were an idiot? My Mum's insisting that I convalesce at her house-which is nice of her, but she's never had to look after me like this before and I'm pretty apprehensive about it!Then again It's probably the safest place.

I had an awful memory, no attention span, and was generally just slow. I expected to watch a ton of TV early in recovery, but I found that it was extremely difficult to pay attention. I had to watch the finale of Orange is the New Black three times before I finally knew everything that happened. I watched a couple episodes of Louie and was able to re-watch them two days later like they were almost brand new. I repeated myself a lot because I couldn't remember if I'd already said something or not. I spent a lot of time messaging people on FB and for some reason I would type "i" instead of "1" -- weird stuff! It got much better every day, but I would say I was conspicuously stupid for about three days.

(Edited to add that I was also extremely sleep deprived. The anesthesia was the only sleep I got in about a 50 hour period).

for a first time BA, general anesthetic is probably the way to go. The heavy duty pain pills the doctor prescribed for post-op pain management always bothered me worse than anything.

But for re-do's, twilight is fine !!! Hell, I've actually 'woken up' in the middle of a re-do surgery ... and, after looking 'down', took the opportunity to ask my doctor to pump in even more cc's !!!

I'm really weird and actually prefer to be as awake as possible during surgeries. You're still numb, so its not like you can feel pain even if you can see whats going on. I've had several surgeries where I was awake but numb, and they weren't scary at all. However, I think a BA would be too traumatic to be awake for. Twilight might be fine though, I'm not really sure what doctors standardly use for a BA.

Thanks lol1337.I have this fear that I'll be a complete wreck and do permanent damage. As I've never had a general I have no idea what to expect.

Melonie! Thanks for replying. That really made me laugh. You're so brave-I reckon I'll hyper-ventilate! I spoke to one girl who chose twilight sedation, she said it was fine, she was aware but not really, didn't really think about what was going on.

Thanks Glamour. Apparently they sedate you so you're ALMOST asleep, then stick two big knitting-needle like things of anesthetic into your boobs (ugh!) and you apparently don't feel this-I know I will. I've read reviews and some girls say they slept all through twilight anyway and had no memory.

I feel Ill go for general based on what I've seen/read online-however my Mum's saying she'd never have a general unless she really had to, as well as my best (male!) friend who says he hates general and would avoid it anytime...I just hope I don't end up paralysed or wake up during it, or never wake up!
I don't know when I can do it, hell I'd be kind of glad if it was happening tomorrow, but I have a holiday in July and would need to be fully recovered by then and I don't think that will be possible, I'll have to wait until after that.

I know so many girls who've had so many BAs, I feel like I'm being far too over-thinking about this and should just get on with it.

I had general for my BA and was surprisingly clearheaded after the procedure. There was some pretty unpleasant shivering and teeth shattering immediately after, but that's common, I think. I would have done IV sedation if it was an option (the surgery facility only offered general), but I'm happy with how it turned out.

I've had both and didn't notice a difference. They did general for my BA and supposedly twilight for my lips. I'm too OCD though if I woke up and saw something I thought was unsanitary( that's my OCD obsession) I would freak the rest of my life. I'd go with general. Not to scare you but did you hear of the woman in the U.K. with pip implants that exploded?

Personally, when I finally get around to having my surgeries done, I'm gonna fight as hard as I can for sedation/local. Most doctors recommend general because that's what they're used to, not because one is actually any better than the other for the patient.
A lot of surgeons and anesthesiologists are more comfortable with GA because it (is supposed to, at least) knocks you out entirely. They don't have to worry about actually monitoring your breathing, just your O2 and CO2 levels, and those are monitored by the machine. They also have to worry less about the efficacy of the locals during surgery because you're out anyway, but that can lead to extra pain on waking. Maybe I'm just an ass, but I think of GA as the lazy way of doing things.
Most of the arguments against sedation deals with DEEP SEDATION. Because you can breathe on your own with sedation but you can stop breathing if given too much anesthesia, it takes much more hands-on monitoring of your breathing and can potentially distract the surgeon. No one wants a distracted surgeon. There's also the concern about whether or not you'll "come to" in twilight, because people have been known to act crazy when conscious under twilight, and you really don't want someone with their chest open on the table to act like a nut job. However, there is the benefit of less pain on waking and (at least theoretically, because everyone is different) lesser need for pain meds. Like my mother, a nurse, is always quick to tell me: it's easier to prevent pain than try to relieve it.

In my case, I know how I react to some sedatives. I would rather have moderate sedation, where I'm mostly conscious but very relaxed and napping if I'm not interacting with someone in the room. It seems a small handful of doctors like being able to talk to patients and get feedback about the efficacy of the local.
Exotic dancing is like any other job.
If you work in an office, you wear dress shoes and a suit.
If you work in a restaraunt, you wear skid resistant shoes and a uniform.
If you work in a strip club, you wear 7" stilettos and lycra g-strings.

I haven't had surgery but I know I'd want full on general anaesthetic. I'd want to be totally knocked out while someone puts implants into me and completely not know what was going on. I haven't looked up the risks but if it was so risky why are people so casual about it? Would they allow it as much if people ended dying from it often? Hundreds of thousands have it everyday. I guess the main thing would be getting it over and done with then you feel on top of the world.

For people who got general anesthetic: did you experience nausea afterwards? That is one of my main concerns. I hate being nauseated. And when you wake up from it feeling anxious would they let you have xanax (if you're already prescribed) or is that a no-no? I will most definitely need xanax after my BA.

I didn't experience nausea after my BA and took a Xanax nap about 3 hours after getting home.

I had both BAs with general. I'd rather not know what's going on cause I'm too freaked out by operating rooms, blood, needles, etc. You should go with something that you personally feel comfortable with! Twilight is a great option because you go "in and out" without being 100% fully aware of the surgery. Good luck!
