Default how blonde can I get without bleach?

    Hey ladies,

So I want to change my hair color, my extensions are finished and I need to get my roots done anyway so the timing is right for a change.

Right now I look like this:

I love being a strawberry blonde and a redhead, but I know my money is going to increase when I'm blonde.

This is the blonde I want:

The thing is, I can't bleach my hair-- I've been bleaching it for years and it's so incredibly broken right now that I can't go without extensions. I want to grow it out so it's all at least the same length.

My hair dresser has managed to get me from almost black (I have SUPER dark hair) to the strawberry blonde I am now, so I'm wondering if she might be able to do the same if its a honey blonde and not a platinum, white blonde?

    Wow, you are gorj, Aud.!
If it's damaged as you say, do you think it's a good idea to push it further? you don't like red? Seems like it would grab more attention..
I'm not a hairdresser, but from dying my own for years & talking to my friend who is, that in order to get lighter, you really do need bleach to lighten hair. Depositing another color over what you have will not do it, sorry.

^ lol, no that's not me I wish! I just mean my color is the same as the model's.

I love being a redhead, my customers just don't love it. I'm going to go true-red if she can't get to the blonde. There's a lot of redhead bias in the UK (more towards strawberry blonde) I just really want to be able to sell the "california blonde" image.

Hi Audrey - well like Whirlerz says you can't go blonde by going "over" the color but you can use a slightly less damaging alternative to bleach which is called a high-lift tint here in the US - that's what I do - and I am super blonde almost platinum. It's still ammonia or whatever and is still not great for your hair but it is better (obviously I am not a hairdresser) but I have continued to dye my hair blonde after damage and breakage from extensions and it actually is in decent condition and shiny now even super light blond. I guess it depends how much more it would have to lift but the difference between the two colors you showed pics of is not HUGE. I'm sure a good colorist could do it. In the meantime maybe you should get a good quality blonde wig and try it out and see if you really are making more money :-)

PS - I used to live over there and know the cultural bias attached to "ginger" - so dumb but it's definitely there for some people!

Getting red out of your hair is an absolute bitch but you really have to get it out of there if you don't want to keep a ginger tinge. You'll need a blue/green toner depending on how orange/red your hair is. You could also try using an ashy blonde colour, and maybe your hairdresser can add golden/honey highlights on top to get more or less the shade you want.

High lift ash toner with a 30 or 40 vol peroxide. You'll def have to use a high vol peroxide which does damage, but not as much as bleach. I don't really think bleach is that damaging though if you don't go over the same parts, and you keep it hydrated.

"lifting" is supposedly not quite as damaging, but it will still damage your hair, trust me. there's just more "ammonia", which is super damaging but people say " its not bleached..its "lifted!" and think your hair isn't going to be screwed. be very careful if you already have super damaged hair, girl!

If you wind up using toners to adjust the color instead of lightening it, you could try what I do for my hair. Mine gets seriously brassy in the summer, so I do 30 minute masques 2x/week. I mix 1 part Manic Panic violet dye with 8ish parts conditioner, comb it through my hair, and then wash it normally. I bet you could camouflage your red (but using blues and greens like shanna mentioned) this way since your hair is already light. Plus, no damage!

California blonde is a good look. I bet you'll bank!

Thanks for the advice ladies, I'll bring it up when I see her tomorrow. I'm pretty confident using her, I was amazed she got me this blonde without using bleach or even using the dryer-- she literally mixed up color, put it on for a while, and washed it out. My hairdresser back in LA always used bleach and had me under the dryer forever. She has the same color hair as me and she's got BRIGHT pink/blue streaks throughout it which she says she manages to get without using any bleach, which is insane-- I used to do that to my hair in high school and my mom would never let me dye my own hair so I got it done at a salon and no one was ever able to get my hair bright like that without using bleach. I'm just worried that even if she can get it blonde it's going to be brassy/yellow/orange or something, cause my old hairdresser always bleached it for the same reason-- but I was going for a super white blonde look then, not the honey blonde I want now.

I love being redhead, I almost hope she tells me I can't do the blonde! I just love money more than being a redhead unfortunately!

This is the red I'm gonna go with if I can't do the blonde, I don't think I'll get as many negative comments with it cause it's not a ginger color at all. Seriously the bias towards Irish/Scottish is insane here, I went to view an apartment yesterday and the guy renting it told me that he thought the girl I had spoken to said I was Irish and he wasn't going to rent it to me if I turned out to be!

AVEDA has a bleach alternative that they use to lift color - it's called Enlightener or something. I have has blond for 7 years and worked at AVEDA salons getting my hair done all the time. BUT that means you'd have to go to the salon - not sure if you're planning to do it yourself....

The Irish and the Sccotish tend to be strawberry blonde and the English just look down upon them as being "less than"... it's just a cultural thing, there's a lot of ginger jokes, the English just think they're better than everyone else and there's just centuries of hostility between especially the Irish and the English. I've gotten some really nasty comments!

The Irish are just off on their own, lol! They don't like anyone, they don't even consider themselves British! They're definitely my least favorite to run into in the club.

The politics are so intense here, I have to be SO careful about how I phrase my sentences when I hustle people. The Welsh are my personal favorites, they're not gonna bite your head off if you mess up interpreting their accent.

No, it's a really small percentage of the population in England, almost all the strawberry blondes are Irish/Scottish. I honestly can't think of what the equivalent would be in America cause we don't have the same kind of tensions with Canada that the English have with the Irish.... I mean, it's basically a form of racism, honestly, just with hair color instead of skin color. It's very weird how segregated the UK is for such a small country, I mean the Southern English will trash talk the Northern English for hours if you give them the chance and say they're cheap, low class, and rude. Obviously not everyone is like that but there are a large percentage who are. I mean, even in London there's a huge East/West divide. The West Londoners are like the older, more conservative, old-school yuppies and the East Londoners are the younger, trendy, casual hipsters (I'm in Camden so I sort of fall in nowhere, the East Londoenrs think my area is too touristy and hyped up to be cool and the West Londoners think it's too trendy and not West enough to be good enough for them). We have that in LA but some people are REALLY intense about "I fucking hate East London and those annoying kids" and vice versa.

Anyway, back to my hair... it was a total fail. I was there for 3.5 hours and we didn't get anywhere, its exactly the same color as it was this morning, it's a TINY bit lighter but the exact same tone. I'm so frustrated. I don't know what to do, I feel there is NO way I'm gonna get to the blonde but I feel like being blonde is going to make it SO much easier for me to make money... I don't know if being a redhead and not ginger is going to help or not. I'm wondering if I should just go the brunette route instead, either a brown with highlights or an auburn? The last time I was a brunette at work my income was cut in half, but since blonde is not an option and red is a problem, I don't know what else to do.

I was looking at some of these colors:

(I love that one but feel like I'll never get the blonde in it)

    [/URL]

She could tell how seriously not happy I was so she had my pay for the day and scheduled me an appointment for Thursday and told me to bring it however I want her to do and she'll do it that way and not charge me.

they actually did a study in the UK, and most men there reported loving brunettes much more than any other hair color ( besides black hair). if your hair is naturally dark anyways, i'd try that out to give your hair a break and get healthier, and then maybe go to blond if you still think your money would improve? i just recently went back to my natural deep brunette, and my money has stayed the same..if anything, gotten much better.

^yeah, the more I've thought about it I think I might be OK with being brunette for a while. I mean, I could always do it for a few months and then try and be blonde once my hair is healthier and grown out a bit more. I just have to make sure that I don't go too dark cause I am SUPER pale right now, I haven't been tanning in a bed (yes I know cancer please don't start) so if I get lazy with fake tanner then it's not going to look that great. When my money dropped at work last time I was dark brown with pale skin.

I like the chestnut color with some golden highlights, but I don't know if I can get those without bleach? She's basically refusing to use any bleach on me hair because she says it feels so much nicer to her than it did two months ago.

I love that auburn in the 2nd photo. I fucking love redheads! I hate this bias.

Yeahhh a lot of their "Henna" isn't Henna... Henna comes in ONE color. Red. Anything else is a mix of either Henna/Cassia or Henna/Indigo... and unless you actually know about these dyes, you really shouldn't fuck around with them... especially because Indigo can be stripped completely on accident if you're not using the proper products... and henna is permanent beyond permanent. So if you accidentally strip your Indigo out... you're left with bright coppery henna colored hair.
I just stripped henna out of my hair. It took six. rounds. of bleach.
Also. Henna ALWAYS makes your hair darker. ALWAYS. It doesn't lighten hair. EVER.
SO if she wants to go lighter... this is the last thing she should use.

I am currently lightening my hair a lot too, and I think you should just tell your stylist what your end goal is and ask her what's realistic for now. That's what I'm doing, and I've so far gone from dyed black (two years of color over natural blonde hair) to a strawberry blonde since early May. Between appointments, I baby the shit out of my hair. I only wash it every three days (an improvement from every day...), and I use deep conditioners and all of that. Maybe she could just do a light brunette glaze over your hair right now, then give you some highlights in four week or so?

I wish we could just select on a screen what colors we want our hair to be. I would swap your naturally dark hair for my naturally blonde hair any time!

Your hair may not even require a ton of bleach to get to a place where you can start toning to blonde. I'm thinking only a couple levels, although the toning will be a bitch. Did your hairdresser say you were too damaged for bleach?
