Default Mosquitos and the avoidance of.

For my body I've been using the Avon Bug guard stuff, the smell isn't awful like the natural citronella sprays available and it works. However, right outside my front door there have been swarms of mosquitos. The local nurseries don't have any of the plants that are supposed to ward the bugs off (citronella, catnip, something else I can't remember) so out of desperation I bought a spray of Cutter, Deet full and sprayed it all over the front door and mailbox.

Its working- no more swarm, and I know a house can't get cancer but am still wary of its affect on the environment. Anyone have suggestions? I try to avoid fire during the summer so candles and whatnot are out. Deet-free and effective are the goals.

The years I planted Marigolds I had less mosquitos. (Pointless for me to plant them this year since my neighbor refuses to take care of his yard until I call the city on him) Also, make sure you don't have any places that may hold stagnant water. That's where they lay their eggs. I've read that a few drops of any essential oil per 1 cup of water is supposed to make a perimiter spray, but I haven't tried it. I'm not sure what else to use for outdoor/yard. B vitamins work to keep them off of a person though. It will make your urine flourescent, but I get bit a lot less when I remember to take my B12. Something about the smell it give off repels them.

Thanks, marigolds were the one I couldn't remember. My neighbors do have them, unless I dig one up and put it by the door I don't think that will be close enough. There isn't any standing water in my yard but I have questionable neighbors (that is an understatement, when the SWAT team is out there it isn't a surprise anymore, just entertainment) so I'm on my own as far as that goes. I guess I'll keep spraying the deet on non-living surfaces and aim it away from the ground for now.

Drain any & all stagnant water, as suggested, it takes very little water for them to have ample breeding.

As a repellent I have heard of rubbing port on your skin, altho I imagine that could get real pricey real quick.

Are there no citrus-based melts that you could put out? Smtg electric or battery-operated rather than a flame that will put out the repellent scent?

mosquitos HATE mint, lemongrass, rosemary, and eucalyptus, marigolds (the oils too!). they also hate tee trea/citronella oil/lemon balm. so rubbing those oils along with lots of mint is a great natural repellant.

Simone, thanks for the hint on the mint, etc. : To think that I've been using the drugstore repellents all these years.

I'll have to try wearing colognes that have emphasis on mint note like Cool Water, Cartier Roadster, Polo Sport, Polo Blue Sport. Kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Now, which of these do strippers like best ?

Mosquitos are attracted to your front door light, change to one of those yellow ones and it will help.

Pyrethrin is the natural insecticide based on Chrysanthemum. can be used on organic crops and degrades in sunlight in about a day. It is toxic to fish and kills many bugs, so stay away from lakes and spray at dusk so you don't kill all the bees. Pyrethrum is the man made and slightly nastier version

Essentria IC3 has exactly what Simone describes in it and is available on amazon

BTi is a natural bacteria that kills mosquito and black fly larvae and nothing else. It is in the mosquito dunks but also comes as a liquid you can spray on bushes an hedges etc.

Mosquitos like water but do not need it, bushes trees tall grass etc are all breeding areas.

If you bought a spray bottle and misted any areas around you with one of these things it will help. Look over the fences to see if anyone has birdbaths, tires tarps anything that holds water.

A cheap and effective way to keep away mosquitoes is to use a fan near you.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/16/sc...deterrent.html

“The solution came from trying to think like a bug,” he explained, “and realizing I don’t like flying into a 15 m.p.h. wind.”

Outsmarting bugs with a fan may be a poorly known strategy. But the method, it turns out, is endorsed by the American Mosquito Control Association, a nonprofit group based in Mount Laurel, N.J., that publishes a journal bearing its name.

“Mosquitoes are relatively weak fliers,” it says on its Web site, “so placing a large fan on your deck can provide a low-tech solution.” The group says mosquitoes fly slowly — from roughly 1 to 1.5 miles per hour, depending on the species.
