Default Anyone ever travel to South Korea??

I'm planning to take an impromptu trip at the end of September to Seoul to visit one of my best friends. I plan to stay for 10 days. Haven't booked my flight. I'm sure once I get out there he'll have an itinerary ready, but anyone's input here would be awesome. Cheap airline recommendations??? Cool shit to do???

Skyscanner.com is a great resource for looking up flights. You can search by specific dates or browse within each month if your dates are more flexible, and it pulls up prices/itineraries from all airlines. Easiest way to find the cheapest flight.

If you're super flexible, Matrix.itasoftware.com is even better since it lets you look at prices for other airports and dates in the same search.

I heard Papa Gorilla is a pretty hip place to be to go clubbing in Seoul. There is also Olde Stomper, a rock themed bar which caters to foreigners.

I've just been through the airport. Asiana is a great airline that flies to Seoul.

I did go with Korea Air and had a wonderful flight to Seoul. Bibimbap as the on flight meal and amazing customer service from check in to leaving the airport!

Just for grins, I went to Orbitz to check some rates. Personally, I found Orbitz site user friendly- it listed flights from cheapest to most expensive, had a link where you could click to view itinerary, listed type of aircraft, and had link for seating charts. Offhand, I'd consider these caveats for choosing flights:
    1) Most flights entail a change of planes in places like Honolulu, Seattle, Taipei, etal. If you miss connections, consider which airport you wouldn't mind being stuck in.
    2) It appears Korean Airlines (and maybe Asiana) might be the only ones that offer nonstop flights, but you'll pay for that privilege. KAL roundtrip was $1668 vs $1451 for cheapest fare. (Hawaiian, with plane change in Honolulu -HNL)
    3) Watch out for 3 letter destination code. Be aware that Seoul has 2 airports. Most likely, you'll be going into Incheon Intl. (ICN) which is ~ 40 miles west of Seoul on a man made island. Closer in airport- Gimpo Intl. (code SEL) is mainly used for domestic flights, but has some international connections- mainly Japan and Taiwan. Best to be clear about final destination prior to having BF meet you.

OT a bit, but I'm curious if Melly May rode on a new Airbus 380, and how she liked/disliked it compared with other aircraft. If you opt for KAL, and flight is on A380, same question for jadey23. Have fun......
    I'm right 96% of the time. I don't sweat the other 5% .......................

admittedly, this trip was soooo long ago, now that I think of it. Like, pre 9/11 long ago. I was an exchange student in high school so apologies, I should have checked out more info before posting!

Korean Air (air korea?) is absolutely one of the best airlines I have ever flown with, definitely go with them if possible.

Also the Incheon/Seoul airport is actually like a really good 1hr30 i think drive from Seoul city, so keep that in mind.

    If you're a vegetarian…good luck haha.

To me from the day I was there Korean imo seems quite cheap! Especially the food.

    I wanna go to Korea!

Yep Korean food is good and cheap (and healthy!). Be prepared to see a lot of kimchi.

I'm sure you'll have a blast. I'm actually planning on teaching ESL there after graduating (fingers crossed). I've heard from friends that Jeju Island is gorgeous. However, it's about a 3 hour train ride from Seoul. Flights there take about 30-40 minutes. Not really a day trip type excursion but something to think about. Definitely check out the bazaars/marketplaces for cool trinkets/gifts. Please post a trip report when you come back. Hehehe maybe check out a strip club?

definitely go see some b-boyz dance while you're there! it's super random but korea actually has a pretty strong hip hop/dance culture and there are some REALLY amazing dancers/dance performances in seoul.
