Default my hair won't take dark color!

so a few weeks ago i went to dye my hair back to my natural color, a very dark brown ( it had been lifted to an orange blond before..ick). 3 hours and 200 bucks later, she had finally gotten my hair to take the color, and it was great for awhile until it started to slightly wash out on the top layer of my hair. i hate my top layer, its always been incredibly frizzy and unmanageable, totally different texture than the rest of my hair. so i went back, but the color is STILL not sticking to my top layer the way it is to the rest of my hair.
i went to sally's today and got some demi dye and developer (the lady there told me to get demi instead of permanent since it won't be as damaging, and i can keep doing it every 3 weeks). i'm going to wrap it in saran wrap and warm it up with a hairdryer..any other tips? i know its porous now from the lifting, but is there any way to help it along besides growing it out?

I've heard that vinegar rinses can help seal color into the hair follicle but tbh I've only ever used it for unnatural, semi-permanent dyes so I'm not sure how helpful it would be to a natural color. It makes your hair smell kind of funky but it does help immensely (my top layer fades super fast as well when I dye it due to over-processing). I would usually do an ACV rinse after dying and washing my hair out and the color stayed at least two weeks longer (I was also using Special Effects hair dye, which is quite good so it doesn't fade quickly).

Yeah when I went from platinum blonde to dark the colour didn't stick very well either the first couple times, I had blonde showing through but it just looked like highlights to me so I was like meh. It should start sticking better each time you dye your hair, I definitely did mine again 2 weeks later the first time because the bleached hair will suck up the colour at first but then not hang onto it. Just keep trying! You may have to darken it in stages more gradually. Another tip I can think of is to use a brown dye with a red base (like auburn). Red has the largest particles so it will stay in your hair much longer than dyes with cooler undertones, it's kind of the reverse logic of when you bleach your hair ash blonde and have to use purple shampoo once a week to keep it from going brassy because the purple/blue colour particles are gone so fast (they're the tiniest).

^ yeah i used one with a reddish base instead of ashy! good point, now i remember hearing that.so i just got through re-dying it myself ( fist time i've dyed my hair myself since i was 14!!), and it looks SOO much darker. i can't believe all the money i just wasted at the stupid hair salon, when i just spent 20 bucks and it came out twice as good. hope it stays this way

Be careful, some semi-perm. dyes do have amonia/perioxide in them sometimes they don't have it listed on the label either..I like Roux or Wella brand.

Yeah ever since I learned to dye my own hair two years ago I haven't been to a salon I wouldn't trust myself and my skills so much for lightening or highlights though. But doing the box dye saved me a loooot of $ my last 2 years of school.

Mine did the same thing for a while, I had rocked the ombre, bleached ends look for a while. I dyed it black and it would wash out of my ends the first month or two and then it ended up holding when I got a better black dye. Also, I curt the deadest of the dead ends off and my hair is much nicer. You might just have to wait it out, get a trim, keep on dying. Maybe even try to go darker?

Doing conditioning treatments that have protein in them will help repair your hair and help the color stick better. You can also use a conditioner with color deposits for upkeep.

yeah i was thinking of the protein treatments or whatever you call them..i did my hair an extra shade darker just to compensate, feels really good that i can do it myself instead of spending 100-200 bucks at the salon everytime, takes out some of the panic..

Go to Sally's and get a bottle of Protein filler. It should be near the hair dye isle. I had the same issue last year and used it before I dyed my hair from bleach blonde to dark brown. The dye took well afterwards. The protein filler fills in the lost protein that was stripped from the previous bleach job creating an even canvas for the darker hair dye.

Ugh, getting bleached hair to take color is such a bitch. I had to do it last summer after bleaching the very stubborn red out (three rounds with developer = holy shit, fried). The problem as my hairdresser explained it is that each strand of hair has these pores and cuticles that are open. Bleaching blows them open and makes them huge. Color is deposited into pores and has to hold in the pores to stay. When those cuticles get bleached and become giant, it takes several rounds of color before the permanent hair color will start to stay and not bled right out. My roomy had that problem dying hers red from bleach blonde and I had trouble going back to brown.

Keratin treatments (I like one by Paul Mitchell) and other protein fillers are miracle workers. Besides that, repeated rounds of coloring, deep conditioning, cold water, and going easy on the shampoo and heat styling help a ton. I also like Argan oil for damaged hair/cuticle repair.

Dyes with henna! I've gone from light blonde to dark brown before in one try.
