Default I'd love to change my real name

Growing up, I hated my name. Now, as a grown up, I just realized I can't have my name anymore and I'm considering changing it to something that suits my physique AND persona.

My current name does not suits me AT ALL!!!

Anyone in here has undergone a total name change. Don't need to know your name, just if you changed it or not...and why.

I've considered changing my name but never actually done it. Be aware that as well as the deed to change your name you will need to change your passport, file the change with your bank, utilities companies, doctors etc. So there can be extra costs to it beyond the legal name changing document.

I've done it. Best decision ever and it cost me less than $200.

I did it over a decade ago-shortened my last name because it was so long.Cost a hundred bucks and was less hassle than renewing a drivers' license

I had a good family friend do it. Granted, he was in his 50s at the time and was only dropping one letter out of his name. His mother (who was an immigrant) gave a very foreign spelling of a common name, such that he was often confused for a girl when people saw the spelling (oops!). He dropped the letter off of all of his official documents as a teenager (driver's license, medical records, diplomas, etc.!) and it wasn't until he went in to discuss something with social security that they even noticed. He filed papers for a legal name change, paid the fee, went before a judge to explain why the request should be granted, and it was done.

I believe the steps are state dependent (go to court, cost of fee, etc.) but could be wrong. Also, as someone else has mentioned, you'd have to get a new license and make sure to notify anyone who keeps your files (medical, dental, insurance, etc).

I understand what it's like having a name that doesn't suit you . Good luck with everything . I've ALWAYS wanted to change mine, unfortunately the only name I would change it to would be my dancer name (I've been using that too long, so it wouldn't be a good idea).

Granted, it was my surname during my marriage, but I have done it. Considering legally dropping or changing my first name for religious reasons, but have just been dragging my feet about it. Some details of the procedure (like explaining it to a judge, the cost, etc) will vary from state to state, but the process itself is pretty easy. The REAL bitch is trying to make sure you get everything with your name attached to it updated. It's easy to accidentally miss one or two (and certain ones could possibly get you into legal trouble if you forget to change your name properly with them,) and there may be additional fees on some of them.

Before you attempt to make the change, I suggest looking up a guide for newlyweds (like this one: http://www.bankrate.com/finance/pers...arriage-1.aspx ) and just substitute "marriage license" with "court document" to get an idea of the process you will have to go through AFTER the name change. Some people find themselves dissuaded from changing their names because they don't want to deal with the additional hassle. My laziness is the larger of the two reasons why I'm not ready to go through a name change for a third time when I'm probably just gonna have to go through it all over AGAIN in a few years.
