Default Bitrate on the Streamate ranking chat much lower than in the Encoder

Hello everyone! My bitrate is displayed on the SM ranking chart is not Excellent (690 or so instead of 750+), even though I'm using the Encoder with the recommended bitrate settings (800+). Can I tweak it to make the output bitrate higher, or it is just me being too far away from the streaming server?

I'm following this. My download speed is 65mbps and my upload speed is 25mbps, I'm only getting about 469kbps as a bitrate when I'm more than capable of pushing out 750+. I'm wired into my router.

This weekend, I'm going to follow the advice I read on a gaming forum and try some registry tweaks on my computer. If it helps, I'll write about them on here. If I don't write back, you'll know I have no computer anymore lol.

Okay, here's the deal. The recommended settings SM gives you are crap. You will always get better results with an encoder profile that is custom-tuned to your computer and internet's capabilities. For instance, I have a decently powerful computer and quite fast internet, so my encoder profile I made for myself is 1800kbps, not 800kbps, and also a much higher resolution. If you're confident in your tech skills, do some reading up on the encoder and make your own encoder profile and tweak it, if not, message someone like me and maybe I'll be able to make one for you. Registry tweaks are not the answer here =)

Many thanks - gonna try this tomorrow! I had thoughts about it, too, as my computer allows for that and much more - but then I thought SM pr0bably knows better and trying higher settings would break something). Now that I know you've done it and are fine - there I go!

Okay, since you're comfortable doing that, I'll share a couple of things I learned whilst making my own encoder profiles. Since SM's RTMP servers are crap, if you have a good computer, you're more limited by their servers then your own systems capabilities. They don't support multiple bitrate streams, and they also tend to scale your feed down to the lowest common denominator. So, you want to make ABSOLUTELY sure that you have "free chat" disabled on SM, as you will have a lot more freeloaders dragging your stream quality down for nothing if you don't. You'll also want to set a minimum bitrate, depending on how low you want to scale down to. It's somewhat preference, but for me, somewhere around 800-900kbps seems to be the sweet spot. If their internet can't handle at least that, they aren't very likely to be a big spender XD. Also, I've found that setting your streaming bitrate any higher than 1800kbps sometimes seems to cause some issues, I guess SM's servers aren't meant to handle very high quality.

I think someone was talking about this in the SM thread a few days ago... Someone, (I think audritwo??) emailed SM asking them about this. I think the response she got from them was basically "We dunno why..." Mine was always in the 500's even though I had 800 set on the encoder. I raised mine to 950 on the encoder just to mess around and I now hover in the 690 range. But to tell you the truth, I never notice a difference. But I am in the "good" range for that in my rankings so whatever. I did notice that when they started the "my ranking" tool, 800 was considered excellent, and I was only reaching 500-600 something. They have lowered it to 750 being excellent. I wonder if that's because a lot of people were asking them about it. Does everyone have this problem I wonder?? Maybe it's not us, it's them. And thanks for commenting TheTiffanyTracy, definitely useful info...

I think it's using the average bit rate that you are actually putting out, not what you have set on the encoder. If you watch your encoder, you can see that the bit rate is always adjusting constantly, it's never sitting at the same number, so I think what the my ranking tool is showing is the average over whatever period of time.

I've been paying close attention to this lately since I moved, my internet is much slower now so my bit rate has been lower as well.
    xoxo ~ Sarah

Didn't work for me. Although it didn't influence my ranking chart at all, it gave me a notification about not using the recommended settings and put me like 6 pages further showing I wasn't streaming in HD (I raised it a step up - the next higher 16:9 resolution, 950 kbps and 800 kbps as the minimum bitrate). Gonna try Leatrix Latency Fix 3.0 (a registry tweaking script for online games) and see what happens.

thanks for the info. The ranking shows my bit rate slower than excellent also, even though I have and excellent laptop I just bought 3 months ago! Also, it says my roundtrip time is slow? I'm not computer or encoder smart ugh!! What does this all mean? My fps are excellent and everything else is excellent. Just below average on the bit rate and round trip

    STREAMING QUALITY FACTORS

    Bitrate (kbps)
    530.51 Good 750 or above

Streaming at a higher bitrate delivers better overall audio/video quality.
    Frames per second Excellent 30.0

Round Trip Time (ms) Poor 305 Poor 100 or below
Minimizing the data transfer time between your computer and our servers will reduce the delay in your chat room.
If any of your Streaming Quality factors are less than "Excellent", see the Streaming Help Guide for recommendations to help you improve your grades.
