    Default big pores and dullness

i need skin help..tonight i looked at myself in the mirror, and my pores look huge on my cheeks, and my skin just looks all around dull and uneven. i use cerave cleanser, burt's bees night cream for a moisturizer, castor oil emu oil around my eye area, and sunscreen every single day. i always take my makeup off at night. i eat annoyingly healthy, raw, and fresh with lots of good fats. i could be drinking a lot more water and tea, but i never drink coffee or soda. i quit smoking, but i'm still using my e-cig..only 0.6% nicotine though. should i go back to prescription retin A? look into glycolic peels? i have really good genetics in the youthful-looking department, but right now i feel like i look old. i know i definitely need to drink a lot more water ( and cut out all processed sugars altogether) but any topical treatments you'd recommend? i hate when my makeup inevitably sinks into my pores, making them look huge. upper cheeks mostly :/

    I had that problem!

I found face masks super helpful - the one I use is a korean brand called SNP Pore Refining Mask. I use it once a week and my pores are much smaller now.

I also get regular/semi regular facials. That combined with the skin care was what made the biggest difference for me! The facial really cleaned out the pores and the masks tightened them.

Anyone tried Glycolic peels? I want to start and have heard good things

Have you tried a daily chemical exfoliant? That forum I sent you a while back really recommends either Stridex or St. Ives face wipes. I've been using the Stridex ones for about a year now, and I really like them. I had a lot of uneven coloring on my cheeks and sides of my face, and consistent use of the Stridex pads has helped a lot. I still use tretinoin cream (generic Retin A), but my skin just does not tolerate liberal use of it. I can use it maybe twice a week.

Re: the e-cig, I've never used them and don't know much about them, but I do know that if I am even around secondhand smoke, my skin suffers.

Also, I recently went on a cruise, and when we got back from one of the beaches, my skin looked haggard as fuck. I was almost crying. All of a sudden, I appeared to have dull skin, fucked pores, and wrinkles by my eyes. I flipped out, cleaned my skin with mineral oil and cerave, then put on a heavy moisturizer overnight (also cerave). The next morning, my skin looked a lot better. In fact, now that I consider it, the cerave moisturizer has made it looked healthier in general since I started using it. I thought it would be way too heavy for my oily skin, especially in Texas with its humid heat, but it has been great. I use it during the day and night, and I just apply it a bit more sparingly during the day/under makeup.

Finally, one last thing I haven't tried but really want to: vitamin c serums. They're supposed to be even better than Retin A for anti-aging and revitalizing your skin. They deteriorate rapidly when exposed to light, so they're a bit more of a pain to manufacture and store, but I think you should look into them. I will definitely be on the hunt for one soon. And this reminds me, in case you weren't aware and decide to go back to Retin A, I recently read a study that shows that it's not just natural light that breaks it down--lights in your home do too, rapidly. So it's best to apply it directly before bed/lights out.

^like, the light in the home aren't good for your skin and you also need to store it in a very dark place?? i gotta look that up, thanks for the info!! i haven't used it in awhile since its a prescription and i haven't been to a dr in a while, wondering if really good vitamin C serums are prescription too..
i really like cerave, so i will check out their moisturizers, and i love stridex for spot treatments but too much of it sends my skin into overdrive and i start breaking out more if i use it more than once a week.
    thank you guys!!

I smoked for 10 years and had large pores. Smoking creates large pores. I have only found one thing that works to decrease pores over time.

L'oreal youth code texture perfecter serum. I use facial scrub daily, moisturizer, and take off my makeup daily. It took me about a month of use with the serum to see a difference in skin texture. My pores shrank to the point they were not noticeable anymore.

The thing i learned the hard way, if you use too much of serum it does get flaky. A little goes a long way and still works.

I hope you find something that works for you!

It should be fine wherever you store it, as long as it's not under a lamp or whatever. The packing is usually very thick and good at blocking out any lights. But some people will apply it at like 7PM and sit in their homes with lights on watching TV or whatever, and artificial light will break it down really quickly once it is out of the packaging. So it's best to apply it when you won't be in any light, artificial or natural. I just put it on right before I'm going to sleep, after I've brushed my teeth and everything, so it's only exposed to a few seconds of light.

Domina beat me to it, I was going to suggest making sure you get a good nights sleep every night. I know everyone is different, but when I don't sleep well I get the skin issues you're describing.

Are you using a scrub @ all? I use Neutrogena Acne Wash (in a light green tube) & just tried Yes to Carrots daily grapefruit scrub (that one's milder, but for my cheeks I need it) the Neutro. I use on my T zone.
The retinol usually helps..I also like Dr. Brandt Pore Vaccuum, I just use the tester of it @ Ulta.

i have the regular stripper sleep schedule..bed at like 2 or 3 am and up by noon or 12:30, which i know isn't ideal, but i always get like 9 hours of sleep.
whirlez, no i don't currently don't use any scrubs, i just need to find one that's either really gentle or just go for the peels and retin A.
tonight i'm rubbing emu oil on my dry spots on top of my moisturizer, i hear its hypoallergenic, goes DEEP into the skin, mimics skin's natural oils, and helps regenerate collagen. its supposedly non comedogenic, so hopefully i won't break out! drinking heaps of water, and i'm going to try everyone's suggestions on the pore minimizing too.
thank you guys, i'm on a beauty site on fb but i feel asking for advice here is a lot more efficient and trustworthy

Use an antioxidant serum. I use ce ferulic by skincuentials. It's pricey, but soooooo worth it.

Any vitamin c serum will brighten up your face, though. There are a few at sephora that are great if you don't want to shell out skincuentials kind of money.

A lot of scrubs can be way too harsh on skin. They can make you break out because they fuck up your skin barrier, and that will eventually lead to your skin looking pretty trashed. I was thinking of your issue last night as I painstakingly removed tightlining makeup from between my lashes, and I realized that one of my friends who has really sensitive skin with products like Stridex and whatnot has an allergy to a common facial wash/product ingredient: salicylic acid. Maybe you should try manual exfoliation instead? Chemical exfoliation works well for me, but if it didn't, I would purchase a Clarisonic, for sure.

^ i've always wanted a clarisonic! i hear they are great as long as you use it in moderation, cuz yeah i'm very careful with my skin's natural barrier because when that's been rubbed off, my face goes to hell. that's why i love cerave so much it seriously helped save my skin from cysts when you recommended it to me. do you think clarisonic would be too much for the skin's barrier?

^I am not sure how often you are supposed to use them. The site says they're very gentle and can be used up to twice a day. I would probably research a bit before starting it and ease into the process to see how your skin takes it. I have heard nothing but good things about them from the people I know who have them, so I would definitely give it a try. Also, have you ever tried witch hazel? I've used it for a couple of years, and it refreshes my skin within minutes of using it. I use it up to twice a day and moisturize right after.

I am an esthetician and Id recommend doing a clay mask twice /week and peels at least once /mo depending on how harsh they are, I like a hydroxy 30 and salicylic peel once every two weeks to help with uneven ness and break outs but its not too harsh(it does sting tho). Also, you can manually exfoliate with a light scrub every other day and as long as you are putting moisturizer on after you will not strip your face. Also, ambi cream is very cheap and helps a lot with uneven ness, even dark spots under eyes. I love the lira skincare line for light peels and their serums, also retin a is great. Its very important to make sure you have sunscreen on at all times when doing all of this exfoliating because you will only make your problem worse if you don't. Like I even reapply sunscreen before leaving the gym cause I sweat it off there. Hydroxy acids are very good for evening out skin tone, you might also find a jessners peel to be helpful for this too, its not too harsh (for me anywoys) but evens out complexion, its salicylic acid (helps with breakouts and clogged pores), hydroxy acid (evens out skin) and lactic acid (replenish moisture). You can also make your own disincrustation solution, its water and baking soda and apply it to a freshly cleaned face and steam for 7 mins and then attempt to unclog your pores by squeezing them between your two fingers and getting all the build up out. A clarasonic is great too but not every day. Oh and don't forget to exfoliate your body too and sunscreen it.

I noticed that my skin always looked fucked after a night of work. It didn't matter how perfect my diet was, or how much water I drank. I never drank alcohol at work, either, and I worked in a non-smoking club. But every morning, I'd wake up looking like hell after a 4-8 hour shift. It almost looked like my skin was sucking up the griminess of the customers. Oh, and I never wore any sort of foundation at work...I'm not sure if that would have helped or made it worse.

Speaking of which, what do you wear on your face when you're working? Do you sweat quite a bit under your makeup?

I had a clarisonic a few years ago and returned it. It gave me the worst breakout of my life. As in, can't-go-outside-for-a-month skin. If you have sensitive skin, beware! Or at least use it very sparingly. It's also kind of a 'trigger' for people with OCD tendencies - it's easy to go overboard with the scrubbing. I also think it's kind of a bullshit product...if you wash your face well and are using relatively high-quality products on your face, then you shouldn't need to run over it with a $200 vibrating brush.

    This works for me:
-Peppermint castor oil soap with a little bit of baking soda added(gentle exfoliating)
-Witch hazel mixed with apple cider vinegar as toner
-Aztec mud clay once in a blue
-Obagi retinol cream once in a while
-For sunscreen, Shira oil free seaweed sunscreen. This is the best for oily skin. It feels like water then it dries up. Just use a little pea size.

charlie, i wear a very light lancome foundation and translucent powder, but last night i think the AC was broken because i was sweating so bad.my scalp was soaking wet! ick.
so far i've just been very gentle with cleanser, the exfoliation i do is with a washcloth and cleanser when i wash my makeup off..i've been moisturizing the shit out of it with heavy creams and oils for years because i'm so paranoid of wrinkles so my pores have probably gotten stretched out with dead skin cells and oil.

Yes, the heavy creams arent' good, they should be lighter & oil free @ your age. I find the warm weather intensifies the bit of oiliness I get, skin/scalp.
For sunscreen I use Sun Bum spf 70, it's moisturizing but oil free & non pore clogging, also hypoallergenic.

chemical exfoliants, both monthly or bimonthly medium strength peels as well as a cleanser or cream that you use a couple times a week will brighten you up a lot. youre not exfoliating enough with your current regime of gentle creams and oils. so do a 50% glycolic peel and get a cleanser with 5 or 10% salycic acid. or something similar. pumpkin peels brighten me up without the downtime. and you must use retin a on a regular basis. same with vit c.

I was having that problem until recently. omg, funny reading this.I have tried everything under sun, home remedies and thousands probably at macy's trying everything. Then one day I was out of cleanser and used some bath and body works foaming anti-bacterial hand wash and found my miracle. I had a really good makeup day that day so continued and after a few days it was like a freaking miracle. I think it was the anti-bacterial that made the difference, idk, but it works.

Regular microdermabrasion is supposed to reduce pore size. But you need to stick to a schedule to see results.

You could check out microneedling. I don't know if it is supposed to help out with pore size, but since it promotes cell turnover I'm fairly certain it will address dullness.
