Default Are Mac laptops good for camming?

My laptop right now sucks so bad. It's really outdated and just not good for camming. I'm not sure what laptop I should get that would be good enough for camming, though I have never owned a Mac and have wanted one for a while.

I don't like desktops. I know they can sometimes be more powerful, but I prefer the portability of laptops. (:

Would the newest version of a Mac laptop be good for camming?

Personally I have to say no. A customer bought mine for me. I wanted the mac air as it is soooooo light and portable, and the battery literally lasts all day. I have found it good for those occasions I just want to jump on quickly and the natural light is good (in built facetime cam). However you need a (paid) app for pretty much anything you want to do like changing webcam settings I can't use my most up to date cam because it doesn't support it, only the older one. You can't use AW's justcamit so I'm stuck with the lite, online version.

At the moment I've gone back to using my old windows lappy for camming and the Mac is my new video editing suite!!!

Other mac girls might think differently but honestly if us paid for it myself I'd have sent it back and gotten the Lenovo thinkpad I was looking at instead!

It can be good for camming. You can emulate Windows if you encounter operating specific problems using Parallels. You can get ManyCam for it (if you need the pro version, I can provide it). It's a lot safer than a Windows PC in my opinion. You're less inclined to get hacked. The security is better. If you put forth the effort to make it adaptable, it's just as good if not better in my opinion.

I have actually found that laptops are not the best for camming. The portability is really nice. But I've been through two laptops now over the past year and I am always having issues. My husband recently built himself a computer and the specs for his desktop to my laptop are about the same, except his desktop runs so much smoother and the internet connection is more reliable (even with me using a hard connection with my laptop and testing his desktop with wireless, it's still much better). As soon as we can afford it I'm going to have him build me a desktop that i'll use primarily for camming, and use my laptop if I need to cam in a different space or do a shower show or something.

My laptop did work really well with Chaturbate and Myfreecams, but Streamate's was a whole other story with their encoder.

Ahh yes the connection is another issue. I have found my internet signal often drops in and out on the mac whereas it never does on my other lappy or the desktop.

Macs cost twice as much then you have to get the software for Pc's inorder to run most cam sites software.

I love my laptops. I have two. An i7 Asus to cam on & a i3 toshiba that I convert videos & upload onto my clip stores while camming & handle all my social media from. The Asus is 1 & half years old the toshiba 3 years old, both still run great.

Could not imagine being tied to a desk. Can take either one when traveling & get work done.

Now I don't play video games from them, but hell I don't play video games. Computers are for work, if I'm not working then I'm not on a computer.

I agree with SexySusie on the Mac Air. My screen is too small to use with the encode and read anything so when I cam with it I usually do voyeur shows in HD only. Hard to edit videos/pics on as well due to the small screen size and my ageing eyesite I got it several years ago due to the compact size and wt but now other laptops are comparable in specs.

As someone who's been in the IT field for 15 years, here's my 2 cents. Mac's generally cost about twice as much for the same performance as a PC. The only benefit they provide over PCs, except in very specific scenarios that would not be applicable to camming, is slightly better security. And that's not to say that Mac's are inherently more secure, it's just that people who write viruses and such would rather write them for 91% of the market share vs 7% of the market share LOL. And considering that many cam sites have proprietary software that only runs on Windows, you would have to run Parallels or some other imperfect solution that would further reduce your efficiency and basically throw any security benefits out the Window. Then there is also the issue of limited Mac drivers. Many of the cams we use simply aren't supported by Macs. Sure, there are always workarounds, but they introduce their own set of problems. Then there is the issue of software. If you look, you can generally find free software on PCs to do just about anything you need to do. On Macs, this simply isn't the case.

TL; DR: Twice the price and twice the pain in the ass, why would you do that to yourself?

Not to mention with Mac you can't convert video into different types like wmv, avi & such. Not good for c4s.

I have an i7 asus, bought in November 2013. But it has windows 8 which I have yet to learn to like. Kind in mind I am NOT loyal to any brand, although a Fijutsu is the BEST laptop I've ever had. Most laptops last about 2 to 3 years before I need a newer more updated one. I consider it a cost of doing business. If I didn't cam or do clips I wouldn't replace them until they fall apart.

Spent about $1000 on my Asus, but when I consider how much money I make at camming, at my clip stores & my site. It is a great value. $1000 for computer, $200 for my web cam, they pay for themselves every week. Due to memory, the wear and tear a camming computer has to go through, you will need to replace it every 2 to 3 years in general.

You can get a great i7 for $700 to $1200 at Best Buy or Tiger direct. I know many men like to build fancy computers, waste of time & money to pacify their egos. I also think fancy rims or big stereos systems in cars are a waste of money too. Your computer or laptop is a tool to get a job done.

A newer, faster computer is always exciting & drives me to work more!

    Good Luck,
    Sam

My answer would be no. I have a mac and I love it for other things but I find it to be a big pain in the ass for camming. There are so many things (cameras and cam sites) that they just aren't compatible with and I've wasted time getting it to work when I could have simply logged on with a regular computer.

I'm about to start shopping for a new computer for camming and definitely will not go with a mac again.

Yes I forgot to add that. I have premiere pro and on a mac it has no option to export to wmv. I CANNOT find a way to convert my mp4's to wmv as no mac compatible program's seem to do it. Keep thinking of yet more downsides

I personally can't stand Apple products and I can't help but feel sorry for a lot of people that do use Apple everytime I see something to download that Mac users have to go through a long process for or just can't use at all, that goes for camgirls too with webcams, software, pretty much everything on the tech side that gets more difficult.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad and I love it. An old customer of mine actually bought it for me at the end of last year, he got it refurbished here so that is an option to get a decent computer for cheaper http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-598-_-Product.

It is an older computer but it is super fast, very durable and doesn't give me any problems with camming.

I was old to stay away from mac airs, not good for camming. There was no quad core available, over heat etc..
Im not sure if Mac will release a quad core for the air.
I tried camming on a i5 dual core and t sucked. I cammed from a qaud core and was clean stream. I tested both and didnt have any issue with webcam either.

Mac Book pro does have the qaud core. I also want the SSD drive.

and now I read we cant convert to MOV :/ bummer but I plan on keeping my i7. I record from other devices, edit then put them on the computer.

now I am just lost again ... dammit
Ty for asking the question and all the input !

Mac does everything on MOV, to convert easily to other formats you need software like iskysoft. I use both, but primarily use my Mac because while my PC is booting up and doing whatever it needs to do and update every single day, my mac is ready to go and I am an impatient person. It works for me. That said, I don't split cam on multiple free-chat sites.

I used a Mac for camming in my first year. They're good systems to use, BUT you need a Mac compatible webcam. At the time, I was using the Conference Cam and my stream looked God awful.

I split cam but with different computers, i feel its easier on the whole system, a little extra life? I just use my old lappys to stream my not so popular sites.

My mac air (2013, 13 inch) doesn't overheat. It runs dolid for about 12 hours with no issues if all I am doing is camming. Not that I'd use it that long of course as there's no damn way to adjust the cam settings as the light changes through the day!

Gonna stop reading this thread as I've thoroughly depressed myself now and just wanna send the damn thing back!

Thanks for the info! My boyfriend's an IT guy and he was just telling me tonight I should go with a Lenovo if I want something cheap but effective for camming.

That would be sufficient for running 1 site in HD, but with only an i5 and 4GB of ram, it would not be able to effectively splitcam in high quality, and you wouldn't be able to do hardly any multitasking while camming.

I only work live on 1 site at a time and I don't plan on changing that anytime too soon. I do stream in HD at Streamates recommended settings (840x480) but my webcam isn't the best, it is the Logitech c270 so when I upgrade I'm not sure if it will cause a difference with causing lag or freezing (hopefully not). I do a lot of multi tasking, I usually atleast have Skype and Yahoo running for if independent customers contact me for Skype shows and sometimes I have Pandora running as well, I have noticed running Pandora has given me a little bit og lag, usually 1-3 seconds so not bad. I do all of this also on a wireless connection with an average upload speed of 2.20. I am pretty proud of my computer being as old as it is to handle everything it does especially on a wireless connection so I do recommend it to a girl looking for a powerful enough computer for a very decent price.

I do that too, more of an indy girl anyway. My Macbok Pro is 3 years old so I will upgrade before the end of the year. Camming and conversion have been my biggest issues with it so far, but they have all had decent (not perfect) work-arounds. So, for a primary cam to split computer, I agree to go with Windows, not the easiest, but for a good, less-worries system with easy editing for clips and good skype shows, Mac is a yes. I plan to have both, a Macbook and a desk-top (lol forgot the name) in the coing year for versatility (want to use internet to watch TV, any hints please pm me!!)
