    Default Post-braces questions!

I am getting my braces removed next week after having them for 2 years!! I am excited but have some questions for those of you who have had braces before...

I really want to get my teeth professionally whitened but I am unsure how long I should wait. I was told by my orthodontist's assistant that I could get it done whenever I want after they're removed, but I am also shopping for a new dentist (my ortho doesn't do teeth whitening and my current dentist neither), called a clinic and the receptionist seemed very knowledgeable. She said I should wait a couple of weeks, then I did some research online and read a minimum wait of a month... I am conflicted!

I took an appointment to get my teeth cleaned at my current dentist's office the day after my braces removal next week. I hope they will not be too sensitive...

How long do you think I should wait before getting a laser whitening treatment? And should I post-pone my dental cleaning appointment by a week or two?

if ALL of the brace glue is gone, you should be good to have them whitened ( if its not completely gone it can cause nasty streaking), definitely get them done at a dentist as he's the only one who can really give you a good answer that's specific to your teeth.

Yeah my teeth ended up having little white marks of brace glue. Its permanent so no amount of whitening will get rid of it. Luckily you can only see mine close up, but it has been what? Like 14 years since I got mine removed and its still there?

So I'd wait until you have them taken off to decide what you want to do next as far as whitening goes. If you can spare the cash and have white marks, you might want to opt for veneers.

I finally got my braces removed 2 days ago!! I'm extremely happy, my teeth are so white!! I wasn't expecting them to look so good after the braces come off... No yellow staining or white spots from the glue, the person who removed my braces did a really good job cleaning my teeth!!

I don't even think I need to get a teeth whitening treatment anymore... My ortho told me to wait a couple of months because my gums are a little swollen, so i'll see then... I'm a coffee addict so i'll use whitening toothpaste for now to maintain

I was surprised to hear that I will have to wear the removable retainers at night for the rest of my life even though they put the wires on the back of my upper and bottom teeth...

They might have exagerated on the "rest of your life" with the retainers. Your ortho might've just said that so you keep using it longer than had he not said that. I wore my retainers religiously for about a year or so, and then I started to get a bit more lax about them. I've had my braces off for nearly ten years and haven't worn them in maybe 5? I think one tooth might've shifted a little bit, but nothing major and since I had my wisdom teeth pulled, there's no risk of anything else really shifting now that my gums/teeth are settled.

Same here, however I noticed after a few months of non-retainer useage...my teeth started aching. I now wear my retainer once a week & it seems to be good enough.

btw brush your gums too after you get the braces off, the braces cause extra bacteria to linger in the mouth...My gums were kind of swollen after I had mine removed but looked fine within a week or so after that.
