Dizzy Does the IRS know when I became a dancer?

I started dancing a year ago, but I had another job at the time and I didn't claim dancing income on my taxes. Now, dancing is my only job since January of this year and I intend to pay my taxes, but I have no idea how much I made last year and even if I have to pay anything? Will I get in trouble? I didn't even have a schedule, I worked very off and on.

I think they would find out if you made a big ticket purchase like a brand new car or home when whatever income you reported can't realistically pay for those items. Hopefully someone else can shed more light on this.

Okay, well I haven't! I have just started taking this job seriously in January of this year when I quit my day job. My only big purchase so far is the apartment I got in April, which isn't that big, but hey.

The IRS would only find out you are a dancer if you report it on your taxes or if your employer reports to the IRS.

Buying a big ticket item you cant afford may get you investigated, but it wont tell them you are a stripper.

Hi I am on this site a lot these days, My daughter dances and i am a tax guy. As far as last years taxes, you said you had another job at the time. That should have generated a W2, if it did that's all the government knows. Any other income especially in the form of cash, is well to put it best UNDER THE TABLE. That is between u and your conscience as to report or not. If u got paid in any Check or electronic format, that is certainly traceable. But as I said if it was ONLY in the form of cash it;s like being in Vegas what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. What I recommend if u are now a full time club performer or cam girl is keep a DAILY record of cash earnings, tokens whatever. Also, keep receipts for anything u spend in support of your earned income. Clothing shoes etc. The IRS has ruled that unless a receipt says COSTUME or ENTERTAINMENT WEAR, it is not allowable. So if u buy shoes make sure it says something in support of ur trade and not just shoes. Hope this helps. Read IRS publication about being self employed and especially Sch C. Also I recommend talking to MELONIE on this site she is great knows her stuff inside and out. ----stripper dad

The underlying point here is that, these days, the IRS has many 3rd party sources of information about a particular person's spending, as well as how much they are earning. If the purchase of a house, condo, car, boat, motorcycle is registered with a state title agency, the IRS will know how much money the person spent. If college tuition is paid, the IRS will know via FAFSA and the bursar's office how much was spent out of pocket vs how much was financed by student loans. And one IRS inquiry to credit rating agencies, banks, brokers etc. will turn up info regarding bank deposits, credit card spending, utility bills, rent, etc. Beyond that the IRS maintains a database showing 'typical' costs of living for every different zip code area.

Thus, put simply, it's now very easy for the IRS to total up the amount of money a person has spent on these 'major items', add a local cost of living, and then compare that amount to the amount of money the person SHOULD have had available for spending based on the income level stated on their tax return ( less taxes paid of course ). If the level of spending appears to exceed the amount of after tax money remaining ( per the person's tax return ), the IRS will assume that the person has unreported
    income and will investigate further.

My good friend Melonie is right, the IRS uses what they call a Lifestyle audit. If you claime to be working for minimum wage, but manage to buy a new Audi, and register it with the state, or apply for credit BINGO ur on the radar screen!
