Default Nail polish that changes color when exposed to date rape drugs

    http://elitedaily.com/news/world/nai...-drugs/724823/

apparently these 4 college students in North Carolina invented a nail polish that allows you to detect if your drink has been drugged when you stir it with your fingers. I would never drink something that I didn't personally watch being made and leave the bar, but thought this was kinda cool just cuz ya never know.

Great idea, but there's one problem: the chemical makeup of date rape drugs is always changing to keep one step ahead of the law and drug tests, so the nail polish might not work on all drugs of them, especially new ones. I was taken to the hospital once after being drugged, and when I got the results back, they told me how the drugs are always changing because my tests all came back negative even though I had the symptoms of being heavily drugged and, well, was assaulted. Made trying to press charged fun since I could only legally say I was "possibly" drugged.

Still, it would help with many drugs I imagine. Good idea overall.

Definitely a great concept, but agree w/ the shortcoming pointed out by SUCat above.

Wonder if sm1 a strong-enough knowledge of chemistry would be able to develop a version of this(these? didn't read article yet) that would be able to detect a broader range of drugs? Even tho the chemical composition may change slightly depending on the mix used, I would think the basic formulas would be the same. Kinda like how sm recreational drugs are constantly being tweaked to stay ahead of the legislations trying to ban them?

WOW, that is INCREDIBLY smart. It's too bad about what sexycat pointed out, but at the same time it's at least one more line of defense for someone who might possibly be drugged. Too bad they can't make bottles coated with something on the inside to test for these drugs, then the bottles would turn a color in their presence. Bright red preferrably

I'm so happy to read positive feedback on this invention. All I've been hearing before now is negative feedback about it.

I love it because I think it would help me relax when out at a bar. I've been the victim of a drugged drink before. I watch my drinks being made and never let them leave my sight and I'm STILL paranoid the whole time about it.

I think this would help my anxiety over that. I mean, I know I haven't let a drink leave my sight but if I could just check it when I start feeling really paranoid, that would be nice.

I think this is a great point. I understand people's notions about how it doesn't actually solve the problem of rape. I understand they want more effort and education to go toward teaching men not to rape. Of course, even if this nail polish exists, if a rape occurs, it is still 100% the rapist's fault, not the fault of the girl who didn't wear the nail polish or dip her fingers in every drink. But, at the end of the day, you can continue fighting for these other improvements to be made and still want and be thankful for something to ease your anxieties during this period of time we still live in where you know that reality has not met up with the ideal yet. Giving women tools to feel safe and in control in a world they're not yet as in control of as they should be, is not the same as victim-blaming.

One of the criticisms is that it requires you to put potentially dirty fingers into a drink you're about to consume. Kind of skeeves me out. It's also definitely not foolproof, as any number of substances mixed with alcohol can be used, including something as innocuous as Benadryl. While I think that this is a great idea, I'm afraid that it will impart a false sense of security and that those who are going around spiking drinks will just find another, less detectable way to do it.

Yeah I think it only checks for two benzos and GHB. You would think they could make something that checks for all benzos since they're similar compounds, but idk. That would still leave out other stuff, but I think it's interesting. Like if you watch your drink no matter what, but still want a double check.

When I was dancing I always preferred to keep a water bottle w/ me, not just for the ease of hydrating but bc it had a lid or a cap of sm kind. Last time I was out drinking w/ friends the convo turned to spiked drinks. I couldn't say anything abt my dancing experiences since only one other person there knew I was a dancer, but it got me thinking, if more drink containers (esp beer bottles, for example) came w/ a replaceable cap, would that do anything to deter sm1 looking to spike your drink? It only takes a second to drop smtg into an open glass, but it would 5-10sec to uncap the container, drop in the drug & replace the cap. Also, a sealed cap might deter the guy who buys a drink while you're not watching, since the broken seal would tip you off that it might have been doctored.

The old fashioned name for these drugs is 'mickeys' as in "slipping her a mickey." Meaning this has been around for a while. I like the ideal of an easy way to test drinks; maybe they can arrest the perp. the spot.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

I don't care if it is true, spread the word, it may have the same affect as the mythical pee in the pool chemical. Talk it up, claim you own some, spread the word

Yes, & I think I have seen nail polishes that change colour based on temperatures, so dipping them in a drink should def be enough to trigger it. I'm sure there's a way to slip a little 'lie based on fact' abt your colour-changing nail polish into a conversation.
