Default Makeup: Where to splurge, where to save

So I'm looking at getting some new makeup since what I have currently is pretty shit, but buying an entire new 'set' of makeup is pricey.

What are items that you feel you have to splurge on to get good products? And where to you think drugstore products work fine?

I mean, mostly I'm concerned about the makeup staying on my face all night and still looking smoking.

For me having a good foundation is the most important so that is where I first spent when buying high end products, every thing else I would save on, I mean I have alot of makeup with high end and drugstore everything, but mostly high end foundations. check out Temptalia makeup blog she has dupe lists and does lots of reviews on all makeup.

What type of skin do you have? What kind of look are you going for? That makes a big difference

Edit: yep I agree w/Chanz. For 'regular' wear I've been using Rimmel BB cream, but I would want a high end foundation..although the ones I'd go for are basically skin products/anti aging type stuff

I've really never found high-end makeup to be necessary at all. Every time I find a high-end product I really like, I immediately start looking for a cheap replacement. Usually I can find one.

What high-end products do you currently use? Maybe we can suggest specific alternatives.

    Hi,

I am a makeup junkie and have my opinions on certain things that are worth the splurge, and some that are not, and some mod priced stuff that is awesome.

Foundation: Revlon 24 hour has nice coverage and doesn't move. It also doesn't dry out and look flaky. Cost: around $16.00

Blush: Nars Super Orgasm blush. BEST EVER!! I LOVE THIS! It looks good on everyone and has glitter in it. I adore sparkle and part with the $32.00 without complaint.

Shadow: Maybelline Color Tattoo eye cream eyeshadow. They come in bold, vibrant colors that show up well on cam and don't lose intensity. They are around $6.00 each.
Urban Decay: Makes the rockinest colors and it stays on all night. They are pricey at around $19.00 each but well worth it.

Mascara: Christian Dior makes one called "Diorshow" and it is superior to everything, but be prepared to cough up a good penny for it.

Eyeliner: I sware by liquid eyeliner only. But unless you are young, with no lines whatsoever on your face, application is key. But it lasts all day and night and doesn't run. Be sure to let dry completely before applying other stuff.

Lipstick: I like the Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain. It gives loads of shine and has good staying power, plus it doesn't dry out your lips. Also I like NYX as well if you prefer matte.

TRICK: To make dark circles disappear, use a matte pink eyeshadow underneath. I use NYX pale pink. Be sure it has no shimmer or it will look silly and highlight imperfections.

TIP: To accentuate a feature, use a shimmery highlight/To diminish a feature, use a darker shade of matte powder.

Most of these items can be found at Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens. NARS can be found at Sephora or any high end retailer, but I get my stuff on Ebay and save $$$

Have fun shopping. I find that dressing to kill is the best part of this..GLAM IT UP!!!

I'd actually argue that Covergirl Lashblast Volume is comparable to Diorshow, and only something like $8. L'oreal HIP eyeshadows are good too. I love Maybelline lipsticks (especially the vivids line) but Revlon has a great matte lip pencil (forget the name). I've never noticed a difference between high end and drugstore translucent powders (I don't use colors) so I go for Coty Airspun. Foundation and concealer are trickier of course. If you can find a color match in Maybelline's Fit Me liquid concealer, the texture is wonderful for a drugstore brand. And if by some miracle you can find a match in Wet N Wild's Coverall foundation and it's not too heavy for your skin it's possibly the greatest bargain on the market at $4. It has the texture, pigmentation, and finish comparable to some Laura Mercier products, IMO. The downsides are lack of color choices and smell.

I used to splurge on just about everything, but now I limit mine mostly to eyeshadow and lipsticks I've fallen in love with where I can't find an acceptable color/finish dupe. Where the hell are rose golds in drugstore lines!?

Default Re: Makeup: Where to splurge, where to save

Application makes a big difference in how makeup looks. IMO, you don't NEED to splurge on makeup ever. I have seen girls who look great in all drugstore products. I personally buy mid-end (brands you see at Ulta and Sephora for $20-$60 give or take) and drugstore-priced products. I don't regularly buy truly high-end brands. I won't buy drugstore foundation because my skin is very sensitive and hasn't done well with it in the past, but drugstore mascara, eyeshadow, blush? Sure.

If you don't have them already, get a set of brushes. I use Real Techniques brushes, and you can find them at Ulta or online. They're very affordable, work well, and last.

Eyeshadow primer is definitely necessary; I don't have any experience with drugstore brands of it though. I use Urban Decay primer. You might be able to find a mid-end eye primer (or even face primer) for cheap at Nordstrom Rack. I found a Lorac one for $13. It is normally $30. Many brands will also include a primer in eye palettes if you decide to get something like a Naked palette or a Lorac one. I really, really love my Lorac Pro palette, but there's a Naked Basics palette by Urban Decay for like $20-$30. Maybelline also has a newish nude palette that has gotten a lot of good reviews. It will be cheaper. Coastal Scents also has a LOT of really affordable options. I haven't personally tried them, but I have heard great things about them and will probably order some soon. This would be a good option if you prefer more color variety in your looks. Oh, I also like Sonia Kashuk's stuff. She's very common in Target. I have her basic matte palette and like it a lot.

Mascara... You need an eyelash curler to make your mascara look great, and make sure you curl your lashes thoroughly before applying mascara. Tightlining, if you don't already do it, is where you take a brown or black liner (gel, preferably) on a thin, flat brush and press and wiggle it into your upper lash line. It makes your eyes way more defined and causes your lashes to look thicker. Using a similar method (press and wiggle) with mascara also helps to build volume. You press and wiggle into the base of your lashes, then pull through the lash to fan them out. Girls often ask me if I'm wearing lash extensions/falsies, but I never do anymore because my contacts are so incompatible with them. I think application matters with mascara more than brand, honestly. I've seen girls with amazing Covergirl lashes and absolute shit Lancome looks. I personally used a combination of Maybelline Falsies and Covergirl Clump Crusher mascaras when I didn't want to spend, and I currently use Smashbox Full Exposure with Clump Crusher (I have clump-prone lashes) and Smashbox primer. I switched because I wanted to try a curling mascara. I see a little bit of a difference, but not enough to say that you won't be happy with a drugstore option.

I use Maybelline's gel liners. I feel like liquid liner is overused and don't reach for mine much anymore, but I have Maybelline for that too.

I like NYX blushes. Everyone does rave about the NARS one though, and I want to try it soon. I also use NYX milk eye pencil to highlight, and NYX taupe blush to contour. I tried a $30 product instead once, and I regretted the purchase. NYX often sells out quickly though, so you may have to look around for either. I really like NYX lip pencils too. I use the "natural" one pretty much every day. They have a big variety.

Eyebrows, I like Anastasia products better than anything. IMO, they are worth it. However, an angled brush and matte powder will work too.

Re: making sure your makeup stays on all night and looks smokin', primer is KEY. Face AND eye primer! And a setting powder and possibly setting spray. I use a Maybelline setting powder and a NYX setting spray. Each of them were about $7, and they both help a ton and last for quite a while.

Besides all of this, I think that practice helps a ton, and I'd recommend Lisa Eldridge YouTube videos and reddit.com/r/makeupaddiction for tutorials and ideas.

I've tried many foundations over the years but still go back to my expensive estee lauder double wear. I think that should be a splurge. I used loreal for years cosmair inc owns them and they own lancome and a bunch of others for drug store they are probably the best. Nyx makes nice pigmented eye shadow and they aren't expensive. Milani use to have the best little shadows( I've tried every high end brand) and milani works best. It's discontinued but I can still get it on ebay( how long I don't know as It's been discontinued for years. Milani has nice stuff, nyx. nyc use to. Wet and wild I use ( again a discontinued) shimmer glitter. I can still get on ebay. I get compliments every night. I wear mac on top splooph. I love bronzers and went crazy for a while with those and spent about 40-50 bucks on like every brand of those. Now I have 4 I use. Lip liner you can find good low end brands but I use mac. And I must be the only person who hated nars orgasm and dior show. I think I still have a nars orgasm from 5 years ago in an old makeup basket because it was too late to take back and every magazine said it was the best and everyone raved about it. It just looks orange on me. Oh and I must have a good primer, smashbox and I tried cheap ones and they are just not as good and since they discontinued urban decay liquid liner I used I still haven't found one. Oh and urban decay eyeshadow primer. I use it under my eyes too. So most important expensive things I must have, foundation, primer, eyeshadow primer and bronzer. The rest I'm sure I can find in the drugstore and be ok.

^I'm not a Diorshow girl either, though I did like the primer. From what I understand, it was pretty groundbreaking when it came out, but there are better products on the market now. One of Diorshow's big problems is that it tends to dry out prematurely (in the packaging and applied), and it often flakes. I liked mine for the first two weeks, then it was just "meh." I know it's a "holy grail" item on a lot of lists, but I just... don't think it's deserved anymore

I haven't tried NARS Orgasm, but the people who hate it really fucking HATE it. I think it has something to do with the sparkles? I don't know. I can never seem to find a blush that lasts on me, so I haven't splurged on it from fear of disappointment... I probably will try it out soon though.

Most of my makeup is high end but not all of it. Some cheapies that I love are NYX jumbo pencils for eyes in the matte white and matte black. They're great as eyeshadow primers, just as good as UD's PP. I tried a couple different colors with shimmer though and they sucked. They caked up. Their shadows I dint go for cuz some are okay and some totally suck.
As far as shadows I find that although Macs are usually rw.oabke I've found the quality of some shades to be disappointing. I always trust UD and Inglot. Inglot is very pigmented and blends SO well plus you build your own palettes and it's cheaper than UD or Mac.
I love Milanis 3d glosses. Drugstore but awesome.
I've had Diors mascara but I love maybellines great lash and have been using it for years despite trying others. I did like givenchys mascara too but for the price Great Lash works well. I also use Great Lash clear mascara for my brows and to get any eyeshadow fallout off my lashes.
I like Nars Orgasm. I've used that, Mac and a UD bronzer. NONE stay on my Mac foundation throughout the night. So if anyone has made it through a shift and not had to reapply blush, PLEASE, fill us in.
Things I can't go without at work: my UD 24/7 liquid liner in Perversion (black).
My Red Cherry lashes in #47 and #01, I stack them and order them online because they're cheap as fuck.
Macs Blush in Blunt for contouring.
Sephora blending sponge for my liquid foundation. My shits flawless with a sponge unlike a brush. The brush makes it streaky :/
MyAnastasia Beverly Hills brow pomade in ebony. I already have good eyebrows but these really help define them more especially since it can be really dark in the club. Plus you can sweat through the night without it coming off or smudging. Love this stuff.

    Some cheap products I love:

Rimmel lasting finish 25-hour foundation. Even on days I don't need a full face of foundation, I like to use this in a lighter shade as my under-eye concealer/lid primer.

    Rimmel lasting finish lipstick

Cover Girl smoothers translucent powder compacts

    Wet-n-Wild liquid eyeliner

Wet-n-Wild Fergie-branded mascara in the gold tube

I used to love Milani's shimmer eyeshadows, but now I use NYX's

Tresemme hairspray also works well as makeup setting spray

the one thing i don't like to skimp on, is good foundations/powders and face cleansers/moisturizers. the skin on my face is my top priority beauty wise, i don't want some cheap product breaking me out, giving me cysts, clogging my pores, or suffocating my face. i do lancome, MAC really breaks me ut so you gotta be careful with high end foundations as well. just cause its pricey doesn't mean its good. i guess you could find a good low-end foundation too, but for me its harder.
everything else is fine to skimp on i think. oh, another thing is you want to make sure your eye pencils are creamy, i find some of the really cheap ones tug at my eye skin. i do love my NARS, lorac, urban decay and lancome to pieces though. its just so pricey

I usually go high end for my primers, mascaras, eye shadows and lipsticks. I go for high quality drug store foundations, eyeliners, and blushes.
This is usually because I go through those the fastest. I would recommend buying quality eye shadow palettes and primer/setting, they are must haves in my opinion.
Also, the better you take care of your skin, the less foundation/powder/concealer is really necessary so I recommend splurging on a good skin routine. Vivo Per Lei is my go to when it comes to skincare because all of their products have dead sea salt/mud in them and it helps to combat breakouts for my combination skin type.
Companies I recommend for makeup products would be:
-Eyeshadow: Urban Decay (esp the Naked palettes), Tarte, Sugarpill, random mineral makeup stores on Etsy
-Primer: Urban Decay PP all the way. It's just an amazing product.
-Mascara: Tarte's Lights Camera Lashes layered with Maybelline Colossal Volume Express and Smashbox eyelash primer work the best for me
-Lipstick: Lime Crime as my splurge but Wet n Wild and Colour Pop are both great if you're looking for inexpensive lipsticks/lip liners
-Foundation: Revlon 24-Hr Colorstay (I barely ever have to touch up my makeup at work, it's pretty sweat proof and imo better than most expensive alternatives)
-Eyeliner: NYX and Wet n Wild are both great brands for matte liquid eyeliner, for glitter I recommend Hard Candy or MAC
-Blush: Physicians Formula 'Happy Blush', and e.l.f.s Whipped Highlighter (Tarte's Amazonian Clay blushes are my splurge, they're amazing and I love them)

Combination - I don't get pimples except the rare one here and there, but I do get blackheads on my nose and chin, and get dryness around my nose and between my eyebrows.

    As for look:

    http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/23...d5e0691291.jpg

Pretty much that. Smokey eyes, pink lips. Mostly just want to make sure my skin looks even, and that my makeup is going to stay put. Especially lipstick. I have a hard time with lipstick not moving off my bottom lip.

And thank you so much, everyone, for your advice so far! I was looking at UD and, like, a set of brushes + primers + makeup would be around $500 and I can't justify that because I don't really think I need a lot of makeup. I just want to look polished.

^I've heard really great things about this product for keeping lipstick on all day/night: http://anastasiabeverlyhills.com/mak...ty-genius.html

I've read a bunch of reviews and checked out before/after photos, and I will be purchasing it soon. I'll let you know how it goes if you'd like!

And to do that basic smoky eye look, I would pick up Naked Basics or the Lorac Pro To Go for great pigmentation and a good balance between affordability and quality. I really like neutral smoky looks too, and I've found that palettes like the above are great investments. It keeps your makeup together in case you want to bring it with you to work, isn't too expensive, and looks great on. The Lorac one also has some other products besides just eye shadow.

I think it is important to splurge on high quality application tools... Using the right brushes can make a huge difference, I love the ones from MAC!

If you look up beauty gurus into the YouTube search engine and scroll through their videos, a lot of them will do videos on this subject with comparisons/swatches. I've seen this done with just about everything; concealers, foundations, bb and cc creams, mascara, lipsticks and lipstains, powders, bronzer a, highlighters, primers, etc. It's helped me quite a bit in getting the most and best makeup for my money. Hope this helps!

I don't mind shimmer. A lot of my bronzers have it. It's just way too orange on me and not flattering.

Look at smashbox. I've tried every bronzer out there and It stays all night. Though I use 2 urban decay and a lorac one too. Mac bronzers do nothing for me. i keep brushing on over and over and it doesn't even look like I put anything on . I do have one decent one by mac.I'll look for it and post what it's called later..

As a makeup artist there is only one thing I recommend as a higher priced product. MAC prolongwear concealer. Holy grail status. Everything else can be cheap it's just knowing what and where to buy. Morphe eyeshadow 2 bucks a pop. Makeup geek 5 bucks. I try to use high end products on clients because that's what they want but honestly there are great options for less with the same results.

I buy almost all my makeup from E.L.F. and BH cosmetics. Super cheap and I've been very happy with most of their products.

The only things I pay more for are foundation (I have to use mineral foundation because of a skin problem), Urban decay eyeshadow primer and setting spray. Occasionally I'll buy an expensive lipstick because I want a color that's not easy to find but that's about it.

everything else is fine to skimp on i think. oh, another thing is you want to make sure your eye pencils are creamy, i find some of the really cheap ones tug at my eye skin. i do love my NARS, lorac, urban decay and lancome to pieces though. its just so pricey
^^^ This is what I'm scared of. I'm cheap as hell so I've always used drug store face products and been fine. But a while ago I changed around my pills and it f!cked my skin up for a few months. I was thinking about buying real foundation (not just BB cream and powder like I've been using) but I was afraid that would make it worse. It's better now, but I'm still curious about make up esp. if I go back into working a job where appearance matters.

My main issue with high end products is that I don't know if I'll like something unless I try it for a few days. I know you can go to a store and the girls will recommend things and let you try stuff on and do samples and whatever, but that's not going to tell me if it will cake or slide off in a few hours, or if it'll make me break out a week from now, etc.

Like you Simone, my face skin is my top priority. I used to have amazing skin that nothing bothered, I would even put sun tan oil all over it at the beach and be fine, but now I'm scared after this issue. I'm just curious of how you guys chose what expensive make up to buy. I guess it's more important to take a risk on that when you're dancing since it's part of your business.

Well, I know both Sephora/Ulta let you return used products, Ulta's policy is w/in 2 mo. I think? &, what I like is they can look it up w/o a receipt, as long as you use a member card.
I was going to say something else, but my allergy med is kicking in.
