Default alopecia areata - anyone had it?

II woke up with a bald patch today - right at the top of my head. I've had a very stressful year or two so it doesn't surprise me, more scare me. Does anyone have experience of this?

I had some hair loss earlier this year, due to stress also, no bald patches. My hair was just shedding, shedding, shedding though. I read some about herbs, & bought & use African Pride Braid spray from Sally's. It feels very soothing/refreshing on the scalp, & has lots of good herbs in it: rosemary, peppermint, tea tree oil, etc. I also massage my scalp at least once a day. I try to eat as healthy as possible too. I also take a supplement. I feel the most important thing is to manage the stress as much as possible.
There's the company Rene Furterer, and they make a lot of hair products that are herbal based. They have some herbal treatment's for women's (& men's) hair loss.

It started when I was 15, I used to have 3 bald spots all at once, has they got bigger it would form one huge bald spot, I was never bother by this condition because sometimes as fast as it would form the hair would grow back, I had it happen on and off for years. I'm now 43 and the last one was at 33.

    Thanks for the replies.

I had a whole load of blood tests and it turns out i have a vitamin D3 deficiency. The British weather and my busy life mean that i have barely seen the sun for the past year or two. My doc has prescribed vitamin D tablets and advised me to keep stress to a minimum and watch my diet - he says it is also linked to the autoimmune response that resulted in my severe a couple of years ago. So back to a raw vegan diet for a few weeks then gluten and dairy free.

I read a study that said topically applied raw onion juice has been effective for hair regrowth so I am currently rubbing raw onion juice into my bald spot and scalp twice a day. I smell like a greek salad, but hey, worth it if i get my hair back!

I experienced a major shed due to being very sick/stress over this past winter. I have crohns and fibro. I wasn't properly absorbing nutrients and had a lot of deficiencies plus I've been anemic (3 blood transfusions in the last year). Be careful with raw vegan. I actually blame that for setting off the crohns. And also its VERY difficult to get all the nutrition you need despite what all the raw vegan books claim. I agree with gluten and dairy free though!
I also bought a Cayenne serum...it's oils mostly with cayenne to stimulate hair growth. Castor oil I swear by and have been using for years. Good luck to you! I know how stressful and devastating such hair loss can be.

Thank you for the advice. Someone else told me to be careful too so i'm just being really strict with the gluten and dairy and continuing to eat fish (i don't eat meat anyway) because it is so full of vitamin D, and eggs too because of the same. I have always eaten a lot of both though but my doctor said that it's the lack of sun that has really done it and my stress levels have probably depleted my levels even more.
