Some dental insurance requires you be insured a certain period of time, like 6 months or a year, before it covers any major work.

Basically all require that, yeah. Like having the insurance for 1 year before it will cover things like crowns, etc.

I recommend Careington and Delta Dental, but they are like discount programs not actual insurance. So like my crowns were still in the $850-$1000 range per each one with those "insurances" but would have been like $1,200+/each without.

It's my experience that dental insurance generally doesn't cover anything except regular checkups / cleanings. It's one of the most worthless forms of insurance, IME. I used to work for a medical company where we had platinum-plated insurance (no deductibles, unlimited visits, etc.)...and even the dental insurance there was only minimally useful.

Are there any dental schools in your area that have clinics? That work would likely be discounted.

Thanks, Charlie..I'm just gonna bite the bullet & self-pay. They (dentist & specialist, forget what he's called) are letting me do payments, so..

I live near Mexico and have gotten work done there. I have a great dentist now in the US and he has had to replace both crowns from Mexico:-(

I am glad you decided to stick with your dentist and do payments. In my experience it is always best to stay with the dentist you are most comfortable with.

Agreed ... 'average' dental insurance typically involves a 3 month waiting period between signup and start of coverage, imposes limits on total annual benefit payouts ( like, say $1,500 per year ), etc. Even Medicaid dental coverage imposes a $1,000 limit on total annual benefit payouts. The only dental services which are actually well 'covered' are cleanings and fillings.

Also, 'average' dental insurance typically covers extractions, root canals. etc. as necessary medical procedures, but typically will NOT pay much toward crowns, caps etc. because these are usually deemed to be 'cosmetic'.

    +1 on the dental school

I feel for you, while I was blessed with good teeth, I have a rotten wisdom tooth that has gotta come out they aint gonna give that away.

A kid that works for me is getting Mass health to pay for some work, so maybe you should move here to the people's republic!

As others have said, dental insurance is pretty much worthless.

We did belong to Northeast Dental, which is now part of DentalSave and also gives access to Careington providers and rates. A few years back, we saved a ton on some major work that my wife needed. Our savings for that one procedure basically paid for several years worth of membership payments, lol.

The trick is finding decent specialists who participate. There are countless family dental practices that participate, which is cool and makes things like fillings a little cheaper, but we had to do our homework when we needed an oral surgeon for serious work. Many of the specialists don't want to work for those rates and a lot of the ones who will are newer and have last names that are hard to pronounce. When we finally found a good, established oral surgeon who was part of the network, we were thrilled. However, when we received the bill, we found that they tried to bill us at higher rates than what was negotiated by the plan. We had to provide them with a copy of the fee schedule that they agreed to adhere to in order to get the bill reduced - by a lot.

No help for you now, but something to think about for the future. Good luck and I hope you feel better!

Those dental insurance plans just don't have that much "teeth" to them. Mine had a $1500 annual limit to it. If it helps, you can deduct medical/dental expenses that exceed 10% of your Adjusted Gross Income. Best wishes for a good recovery...............
