    Default Stripper Wins MasterChef

Don't know if anyone else follows the show, but my husband and I love MasterChef and watch it every year. Yesterday contestant Courtney Lapresi-a former stripper from Philly-won the title of MasterChef, $250,000.00 and a cookbook deal. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...book-deal.html She's a good cook and whatever, but I felt slightly annoyed when she talked about her job stripping in the finale. She said " The bills were piling up and I made the disappointing, embarrassing decision to work in a gentleman's club." However, through the entire season she wore skirts, and high heels, obviously using her job title as a kind of shtick. She also won Entertainer of the Year at her club, Delilah's TWICE so I have a hard time believing that she hated her job so much. It just made me roll my eyes. I don't tell everyone about my job because I don't want to spend hours talking about it, but I'm certainly not "embarrassed" about it.

is this 'sweeps week' for TV ratings ?

I don't mean to impugn Courtney's culinary talents in any way, but ...

    - Fox Network clearly understands that high TV ratings = high advertiser revenues

    - Fox Network also understands that T & A attracts male viewers ( which is particularly important for expanding the typical viewers of a 'cooking' show )

As to the comments she made about her decision to become a 'stripper' being disappointing and embarrassing, I would guess that such comments were a 'necessary' part of future marketing for her upcoming cookbook.

Melonie, they definitely keep people on that show that really -shouldn't- be there for drama/ratings. Courtney was a top contender from the beginning though, so I would like to believe she's talented...You're probably right that she had to make those comments for marketing reasons, but still...Eye roll from me!

Seems like most reality shows are scripted fakes?

I bet the badmouthing of stripping was staged/written into her dialogue. Let's be honest, as much fun & money you can get out of being a stripper...There is no loyalty in the biz and you are old news pretty fast. I guess she didn't want to sound like she was "upselling" the occupation of exotic dancer to unwitting viewers at home. On top of that...I'd bet you a lot of her old co-workers either don't remember her or are badmouthing her now. It happens to actors and actresses who make it big, it happens to strippers who move on too.

I work at Delilah's and I can tell you that she was popular and well liked there. She quit over a year ago but those of us who remembered her were stoked to see her end up on Master Chef! I didn't watch the show but I'm sure her "confession" was scripted. With that said, she wasn't happy as a stripper even though she was a high earner. We were dressing room acquaintances and she'd talk frequently about how she wanted to be doing something else. Last I heard from her before the TV show she had moved on to working as an aerialist in nightclubs. Entertainer of the Year is a burlesque/aerial performance competition, it's not an amateur contest and isn't related to the hustle. It's possible to do those contests and still not be comfortable with lap dances, in fact I would say that most of the girls who do the competitions are not the girls who you see in VIP every night. Homegirl trained like crazy when she did competitions, I'm sure she brings the same passion to cooking.

Everything in the media is completely fake though. Like the media is solely made for the dumb people of the world, and the media makes a huge profit off their views, thus getting more & more brands to pay for commercials on that channel/show and increase hyper-consumerist activities.

The intelligent people know that others are creating faux drama and pulling the mind and heart strings of those who are dumb enough to buy into it. The media is a sales job after all.

So yes, selling the dumb or damaged stripper tag always works. The biggest predictor of future sales (views) is past sales, and stereotypes always sell, sadly. The stripper knew she would get a lot of media exposure from that, and she would be more likely to be picked as the winner just because the head who picks the winner (its obviously rigged) knows that the stripper girl would get MasterChef a lot of additional PR exposure for their MasterChef brand.

I mean, she could have easily never mentioned it. Its not like its escorting where its illegal and no major brand should admit to it. Its all about legalities and sales. She obviously did it on purpose to use to her advantage. This is the same "success" model the Kardashians use.

history repeats itself ... 'Bread and Circuses'

However, I have great respect for Courtney's abilities to maneuver herself into a position of cashing in big time via one of the modern day 'Circuses' ... even if part of that maneuvering involved painting her past stripping activities with a 'negative' brush !!!

Yep. Belle Knox was another example of this. Genius marketing plan.

I watched the whole thing except the finale, and throughout she was described as an 'ariel artist' like in the circus, never as a stripper. She doesn't come off in a sexual way onscreen either, more like a wanna-be retro housewife in really full skirts. I don't know how or why the stripper thing came up but it was not involved for ratings during the show's run. Frankly, I would have pegged a couple of her competitors as more likely to be strippers/ glamour models than her.

Her pole trick picture is driving me up the wall. As a winner of entertainer of the year--a competition that is about DANCING--I don't understand why she isn't pointing her gosh darn toes while she's doing polework.
