Default Life Insurance Policy for a Pot Smoker

I am looking to get a life insurance policy on my son's father. As far as I know, he is healthy but he does smoke pot. I am assuming he does not have a card. I have googled to see if it is possible to get a life insurance policy on him and it seems that it is possible with some companies. Does anyone know what companies will insure him? Thank you!

^^^ the answer is yes, 'but' ... with the 'buts' discussed below - from

(snip)"It's a fact that the insurance industry will not allow anyone to take out a life insurance policy on another person without his or her permission. In addition, it's probably illegal in most states. Here are some reasons why, besides the obvious privacy infringement.

•There are medical questions that need to be answered by the person being insured.

•The insurance company has the right to medically examine the individual and check past medical records, requiring his or her signature.

•The accuracy of the application must be agreed to and signed by the insured. The fully completed and signed application then becomes part of the insurance policy.

If you do succeed in getting him [ an ex - sic ] to agree to apply for life insurance, try to be the policy owner, not just the beneficiary. The owner pays the premium, which would avert a major source of conflict in the future. In addition, only the owner can make changes to the policy terms. And if there is cash value as part of the life insurance policy, only the owner has rights to that.(snip)

So, basically, you ex needs to agree to apply for life insurance coverage, and also agree to 'co-operate' with the life insurance process. He needs to agree to the necessary medical / personal 'disclosure' requirements. He also needs to submit to and pass a physical exam. Obviously, it would be you who will have to make the monthly premium payments. Any of the major insurers should be willing to write such a policy, providing that your ex agrees to all of the above.

Also, as the adviser implies, 'term' life insurance is preferable over other forms of life insurance because there is no question of 'cash value'. That could become a messy situation in the future if a significant 'cash value' builds up over the years as the result of YOUR monthly payments, but when your child reaches age 18 or 21 your ex decides to terminate the policy and pocket the built up 'cash value'. Preventing this would require that YOU be the legal owner of the life insurance policy, rather than your ex ... which is something else that he would have to agree to 'up front'.
