Default Transitioning into the regular workforce. Need advice!

I've been a dancer for 14 years. I've had some regular jobs here and there, but I have mostly danced that entire time. My last regular job ended back in 2006 (8 years ago). I recently underwent esthetics training to become and esthetician/ skin care therapist. I thought that I wouldn't need a resume with work experience once I had my training, but it turns out that I do. Now I am tasked with trying to figure out what to put. If I lie, I know I'll get caught, I'm a terrible liar. If I tell the truth, I'm afraid I won't get any calls back on my resume.

Have any of you made a similar transition? If so, how did you do it?

It essentially comes down to taking your chances as an 'honest' worker with a past history of adult industry work, or a 'dishonest' worker with a past history of adult industry work, if any sort of comprehensive background check is performed.

At one time, if the straight job didn't involve corporate employers or professional licensing, it was fairly easy to simply leave all adult industry work history off one's resume and claim 'housewife' status or invent a self-employed business to explain resume' gaps. However, doing this today involves greater risk.

Also given that you live in a notoriously 'liberal' city, one would hope that a successful past history of adult industry work wouldn't be held against you ... and could in fact be considered an asset.

Well, you might just have to start at the bottom. I'm not sure what counts as entry level in your field, but looks for those kinds of jobs since they won't demand work experience as much -- or at least not necessarily relevant work experience. You could also look at reception jobs in spas/salons.

If you can, I would pretend you worked in bars when asked, rather than danced. If you're close with a manager, maybe they can vouch for you as a server at the club or something. This is where your friends and network can come into play as well, because a recommendation can help you overcome a lack of work experience, or help you cover up your dancing past with a different job.

If you've danced for 14 years, you can't be that bad at lying!

Do you have children? Just put down "Stay at home mom." No children? Then say you have been a caregiver for an elderly relative.

I don't think most salons are going to do too much of a comprehensive background check. A salon is not like trying to get a job teaching children or in banking and finance.

Definitely don't put down that you were a stripper. Ladies who work in salons tend to be judgmental as hell. You probably already experienced some of that while attending beauty school. Just keep it to yourself, and you should be able to land the job you want.

My advice? Look up resume examples that are relevant to the job and start writing your resume. Just say you've been self-employed doing whatever (house cleaning, babysitting, selling your own jewelry, whatever shit you want to make up) and put that shit on a resume. Want to know the god honest truth about people's resumes? 99% of them are made up of lies or exaggerated truths. You have to if you want a job in this economy. If everyone told the truth on a resume, the economy would crash b/c noone would hire anyone, lol.

I've been applying for vanilla jobs lately and... I just owned it. Put the name of the club and that I'm an "entertainer" right on the application. I've been called for interviews at both companies I applied to, so it didn't hurt my chances so far.

I can't imagine that a salon is going to have that much of a problem with your history as a dancer. In fact, it may help you, as it demonstrates experience with self employment and sales.
