    Question Gum Surgery! Nooo

Yea, so today I was @ the dentist..didn't expect this. I just thought I was gong to get 'fitted' for a crown, get a temp crown etc. But. She (my dentist) had to drill my cavity. I prev. had a root canal w/a specialist (2 wks. ago)...this b/c of a cavity under an old crown..
So, anyway after having had my old crown basically banged out of my mouth, then had cavity filled, temp crown put on, etc. she tell me I most likely will need gum surgery, because the crown has to be lengthened to completely cover the tooth, (it had a deep cavity) & or will pinch my gum otherwise..
I've been w/my dentist & know her thru an old friend for awhile.
I have to call her for the next appt. Mon., she had to leave quickly to pick up her daughter.
Btw, I still have another root canal after this, another cavity under a prev. crown. .
Hope this makes any sense, Oxy's hitting me now. Bleh.

Damn, I'm sorry you have to go through all of this. It sounds expensive too. Ouch. I hope it all goes well! I wish there was something else I could say. I am due for alot of dental work as well, although I am trying to put it off b/c it's so damn expensive. I need 2 bottom wisdom teeth surgically removed, need cavities to be filled, and need another back tooth pulled b/c it has a huge hole in it and is completely useless and could cause an infection. Dental work is never fun

Gum surgery is nothing compared to tooth stuff, IMO. I don't know exactly what they r doing in your situation, but I had 3 separate gum graphs and only one was mildly painful (it was pretty far from my gum line). I hate novacaine in the nerve in the back of the jaw and gum surgery only requires it directly into the gum. Good luck!

^ ITA. My gum graph was a breeze (although after about a year my gums receded back to where they were to begin with, lol). Don't stress out too much, Whirlerz! It's not as bad as it sounds!

I want to thank you so much ladies for taking the time out for me, ladies. To explain: I had a root canal, then an old crown removed (cavity underneath it) then cavity drilled.
So, being the tooth was so bad, the crown needs to go up higher than normal, going into the gum, which'll irritate it, hence the surgery.

Awww! I'm so sorry about that. I've had gum surgery before too, when I was much younger. I basically had gums that covered half of my teeth and when I smiled I looked like I had freaking baby teeth. It didn't hurt. Basically, they do anesthetics. This will make your mouth feel really swollen, like a balloon, and it's uncomfortable but it's so much better than feeling them cut into your gum. That's all you'll feel. It might take awhile, so definitely close your eyes, you'll feel way more comfortable and the dentist won't be distracted by you staring. Plus, you'll bleed and you don't want to see the tissues they'll wipe it off with. After they're done, they'll do the cleaning, which is the only bad part in my opinion. It's like any normal cleaning at the dentist, but with a lot of the suction tool that gets the drool out of your mouth. I've always hated those things. The numbness will go away after you're home. Just take a nap afterwards. I know your surgery isn't cosmetic, but I felt much prettier after getting my surgery. It opens up your smile.
