    Default Least damaging fake nails

So, as a retired escort, I have gotten lazy with the upkeep. I used to maintain great acrylic nails but once the thigh highs and condoms got shelved, removed them and went natural. Now a year later, I miss the look of them BUT I also love how healthy my nails are. I cannot grow nails to save my life. I took months to get them here.

What should I ask for at the salon and is even possible?

    ^^ This

I have gel nails basically constantly, no noticeable damage when they're removed- nails still look super healthy. They are also basically bulletproof- I've never had issues with one breaking off, and I work out pretty seriously.

Does I add length by chance?

Shellac would, IMO, be a better choice than gel. Gel nail polish requires that the natural nail be buffed. It will weaken nails, though some notice it more than others. I have pretty thin nails naturally, so mine break when I do gel. Shellac is a little bit more expensive, but it's worth it for me. I don't know of anywhere that adds length with shellac, but it's very durable and often helps you grow your natural nail out quickly. Gel enhancements (added length) are done at some salons, but I've never tried it.

Shellac is more like a polish that is suppose to last longer whereas gel nails are more similar to acrylic.

I don't find gel very similar to acrylic... I've never seen the lengthening process with gel, so maybe that's what you mean, but with a basic gel manicure, the process/outcome is very similar to shellac, so much so that many salons claim they are giving shellac manicures, but they're actually using gel. The main effective differences from what I understand are that shellac polish is thinner than gel, which gives it a better look IMO, and that shellac polish does not require that the natural nail be buffed before application. Gel requires it, and if someone does the primer wrong with gel, it can supposedly really fuck up your natural nail. I prefer shellac because it lasts longer for me (might be a difference in who applies it and how), and it doesn't damage my nails like gel does because of the buffing.

Another less important difference is that shellac is owned by CND company, so only salons that use CND products do real shellac manicures. If your salon claims it's doing a shellac manicure but the bottle says gel, they're buffing your nails (roughening them up) before applying the primer/base coat, and they're charging like $30 instead of $40 (in Houston, at least), you're actually getting gel. I clarified that I wanted shellac once, and the woman was like, "Oh, this is shellac!" "No... the bottle is the wrong brand and says gel." *blank look* A lot of manicurists may not even realize there's a difference.

Gel nails. Correct application and removal is necessary in order not to damage the natural nail. You don't want to file too deep into the nail bed during prep and you don't want to "pop" your nails off when you're ready to remove them (I've met too many people who think that's how you're supposed to do it. ouch). I prefer the tip method rather than a full on gel extension with a form (like acrylic). Gives me more control:
