    Default Mental Illness Poll

Myself, I have been diagnosed with clinical depression. I also have mild OCD (sometimes it occurs, then it will subside). In the past, I had severe social anxiety disorder (social phobia), but that has been cured by psilocybin therapy. I also take Saint John's Wort sometimes to cope with depression if it isn't too severe. This herb will not help with severe depression, only helps mild depression. I have to always battle with depression so that I can work regularly. I don't want to stir up any old wounds, I just want a place to talk openly about these things.

PS: You can choose more than one answer on the poll.

You should add ADD/ADHD….I think that is very common.

I don't want to disclose my diagnoses publicly, but stripping works better for me because it allows for so much flexibility. I'm terrified for the day it will no longer be an option.

ugh, I've had both anxiety & depression my whole life on & off. I get PMDD really bad sometimes too, like the last couple of weeks was soooo bad for me filled with insane mood swings, food binges, insane depression, feelings of hoplessness, etc. I'm going to the doctor soon to get meds for myself.

I've had severe anxiety and OCD my whole life, the general anxiety has been at its worst in the later part of my life though. I'm also an alcoholic which was mostly brought on from self medicating through my anxiety issues.

Me too, I've struggled with ADD, anxiety and depression my whole life. My little brother was diagnosed with Asperger's and sometimes I suspect I may have it, but to a lesser degree. I take Vyvanse for ADD, Effexor for depression.

I have psychotic depression with anxiety. I take lithium, abilify, effexor and nitrazepam. I think that with a mental illness, you need a flexible working life so that when you have an episode, everything doesn't fall apart. Perhaps that is why we are attracted to dancing/camming etc. I danced on and off while in and out of hospital and these days I do affiliate marketing full time for the flexibility.

I've had depression for years, and have struggled with on-and-off bulimia and bulimic urges when I'm keeping it under control. I honestly don't think I was drawn to the industry because of either of these, though I do totally get how it's easier to work your schedule around having an episode. My last bout of major depression was in February and I didn't leave my apartment for a week. If I'd had a real job to go to, I would have made myself go - I've done that before - but it was nice to not have to force it this time.

I honestly think my symptoms lessen the more I work. I feel in control and successful, the flexibility allows me to focus more on the things that are important to me, I get an ego boost about my body that makes me appreciate it and think it's rad the way it is, and I even enjoy most of the people I talk to through work, so it usually boosts my mood. I certainly didn't expect that to be the case when I started, so I wasn't drawn to the industry under the impression that it would take away all my mental troubles and make me feel better, but I can definitely say it's one of my motivating factors for staying in it now.

Autistic stripper is kind of an oxymoron it's possible I might be one. Some therapists said I have the symptoms but others believe it may be how I was raised, and not an inherent thing.
Either way, I am hoping that it doesn't hurt my earning as a stripper too much, or at least I'll find ways to 'mask' the behavior by learning some hustling tips.

I just found out that autism is actually a neurodevelopmental disorder, not a mental disorder. So it is different from all the other disorders I have listed in the poll.

I struggled with depression and anxiety for years but I have been pretty much free from those illnesses for 4 years now, ever since I divorced my ex and started stripping. I began having panic attacks and had to be hospitalized when my brother and mom died. Then I married an asshole who emotionally and mentally abused me. I used to be on Ambien, Xanax, Zoloft, Vicodin, you name it. Now I don't take anything but the occasional Tylenol. It's really amazing what gaining your independence and removing toxic people from your life can do.

^^^^ your comment abt finding the courage to start stripping from your rough past is quite insightful. It made me think of the female customers (both the bitches & the cool ones) who say 'I could nvr do what you do!' abt dancing. My upbringing was unorthodox in sm ways by current standards, but not in the least bit abusive, & mental illness runs in my family. While I hate the stereotypes too, I have to agree that stripping is w/o a doubt one of the most difficult jobs out there, but compared to certain circumstances in our lives it's a walk in the park.

My problems w/ mental illness mainly involve depression. If I could make a career out of internalising, I would be at the goddamn top of the field. Was forced onto medication when I was hospitalised but took myself off of it cold-turkey after abt 6mo … God Almighty … can't take any meds bc of aviation/military.

I've always found it very ironic, the stigma surrounding mental illness -- so many 'normal' healthy ppl would rather have us remain crazy & suffering, & not have them know abt it, than acknowledge that these problems are real & sm times dangerous & help us get the help we need.

I'm Bi-Polar II with some ADD thrown in.

I do not take medication- but after having a semester of medical withdrawal from college I did implement some lifestyle changes. Not working 40 hrs/week while going to school full time and always being financially on the brink is one of them.

I also try to be really mindful of my hypo-manic upswings and not behave rashly, burn bridges, or compromise my stability. I learned how to communicate effectively when I'm feeling out of control, and to be really aware of how I treat my partner, isolating myself if necessary. During lows I make sure to have daily (wash dishes) and monthly (pay bills) goals so I can keep accomplishing things even if I feel dead inside and everything hurts. Sometimes those goals include "brush teeth" and and I get a nice mental gold star for dragging my carcass out of bed. Making everything simple so even if I'm freaking out I can just check it off on my fingers and be assured I haven't forgotten anything helps. Trying to treat others with kindness and integrity makes it easier to dismiss social anxiety.

Exercise really helps. And activities outside of work. I try to have Sunday brunch with a friend after a hard Saturday night, so I can put better images in my mind and have wholesome human contact. Plants make me happy, and going outside to garden is extremely therapeutic. The cat yowling for breakfast also inspires some semblance of usefulness and order.

I put autism since they say that synesthesia is on the spectrum ( although there is ZERO of the social issues and what not that many associate with the disorder, Just the extra sensory input- I personally dont think it is tbh, and they just love boxing things on to " the spectrum" since were still in pretty infant levels of understanding neurology)

the only other one is GID/ID/GD -

but other than that bit of dysphoria I have no actual issues or baggage or anything else really- sorta ADD ish? but I think thats more do to lack of intellectual stimulation or just a learned condition of an artist always wanting to create and move from one project to the next

Unfortunately, I have been diagnosed with many mental illnesses. Depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, bipolar disorder all linked to my past and a bad childhood. I do think that is why I picked sex work because I am able to cam from home without having to leave my home. Out of all the disorders I have been diagnosed with, I think my anxiety is definitely the worst of all of it.

I do not take medication because it has never had an effect on me. Often times, it makes symptoms worse. I try to maintain a good diet and exercise 5-6 days a week, but it is mostly just something I cope with and try to push to the back of my mind.

I suffered from severe PTSD after exiting military service. That coupled with Bipolar II and depression really did a number on me. It's only in the last year that I've really started turning my life around. Luckily I've been extremely fortunate that mostly all my friends and family stuck by me. I see a therapist once a week and am very optimist that I'll have a joyful and productive future. I don't take meds but am meeting with a psychiatrist next week to discuss possibly taking some. My only concern is that I do drink and I don't want to be on meds unless I have my drinking completely under control. For those of you that are suffering and struggling please keep going . Make each day , each hour a small victory. And if u can't, still don't give up. These holes are deep and dark but they are not impossible to conquer. And reach out to other people. You'd be surprised at the amount of people who have empathy and concern for you, even strangers. Don't be embarrassed or afraid to ask for help. I wish I'd done it sooner.

I hit about 4 on there. I go through phases where it's more of a problem than others. Unlike most people posting, though, I don't think stripping really helps keep them in check, if anything it brings them out more.

Not that it really matters, but OCD probably should have its own category because it is no longer considered an anxiety disorder. Its neurobiology has been fairly well established by this point, and it resembles a tic disorder much more than it does an anxiety disorder.

I checked anxiety, although I have had mild bouts of depression in the past. I think moving to LA, brought on a certain amount of anxiety, though I've lived here for quite sometime now. Moving down here as an actor, I always felt like I couldn't walk out of the house unless i looked 'camera ready'. I'm not as bad recently. If I feel like I'm having a fugly day, I just put on a cap and wear sunglasses. At least I leave the house. I take the occasional xanax and trazadone for insomnia.

    Do you have a source?

OCD is caused by chronic anxiety. Here is a source that categorizes OCD as an anxiety disorder: http://www.adaa.org/understanding-an...e-disorder-ocd
