Default Do you keep an weapon (gun) at home?

Or carry it on you or in your vehicle?
I started wondering how many dancers might because of our job and/or combination of other factors (a lot of us might live alone, carry lots of cash, etc).
i have a hand gun at home. I don't keep it loaded, it's in my closet in its case with its ammunition. I installed a chain on my door because some of our maintaince staff creep me out and it might give me time to reach and load my gun in case there is a break in when I am home. I don't carry it with me because I valet my car and don't trust the valet guys and wouldn't dare bring it into work around a bunch of drunk people. I plan to carry it when I have a vanilla job however.

I am wanting to get my concealed-carry permit. It has been kind of a back-burner thing for a long time, but it would have been all but pointless when I lived in VA. VA has reciprocity w/ TX & FL, all states where I have lived, but most of my family is in MD who has reciprocity w/ … not many other states (so can't have it while driving to see my sister in W. Baltimore grrr). I was working in DC as well & you know how DC feels abt the common citizen having access to guns.

I am now back at home w/ my parents we have always had guns in the house. In a family of cops it's just a fact of life & we were raised to respect them. My dad has several in the house, & whenever my brother visits he always has his on as well.

I need to wait about another year to get a concealed carry permit in Texas: I have a misdemeanor from 2011. Concealed carry permits from Texas look like driver's licenses and are a valid identification, for they're issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

I have one at home, though.

Guns really scare me. My dad wanted to get me a gun when I moved out, but told him I didn't feel comfortable with it. I've gone shooting a couple of times, but my ex-bf did all the cocking and reloading. I just remember feeling all the power expelled by every shot and the terror someone must feel if they are being shoot at.

Maybe try a shooting session w/ a qualified instructor? Not trying to imply that your bf doesn't know what he is doing but there is smtg to be said for professional help. He will walk you thru proper handling, including finger positioning/grip while cocking, loading, & dropping a spent clip. Also if the gun is too big that will make a difference. I am equally emotionally comfy w/ my brother's Glock, my dad's Beretta & his Walther, but physically only the Walther is comfortable (& thus probably safer) for me to hold & handle. *cue the old BK 'I have these tiny hands' commercial * if you are having trouble physically manipulating the weapon, cocking etc he will probably be able to show you an easier way to handle it.

One of the big safety points that was driven home to me is to nvr have your finger anywhere near the trigger unless you are aiming & abt to shoot. This is bc in our house, as my dad says, 'It's not a paperweight' meaning it's always loaded w/ a round chambered & the safety is always off.

But I seem to have problems with 'concealed carry ' ...

This is my favorite pistol ... a Baby Eagle polymer frame in .40 S&W caliber, with Magna-Porting. Enough 'stopping power' to do it's intended job if needed, but still 'controllable' enough that firing it doesn't knock me backwards or put a 'dent' in my forehead.

I'll also repeat advice I have given to dancers in the past about carrying a pistol. Before you even consider doing so, examine your own mind to determine whether or not you are prepared to 'do what you have to do' if faced with a situation where you must defend yourself against a serious attacker. If the answer is 'I'm not sure', then having a pistol but not using it ... or, worse, having a pistol but allowing an attacker to get it away from you and use it ... are worse than not having it.

I think there was a bill in the legislature to add the concealed handgun provision to your drivers license. You would not have to carry two separate documents.

Don't let your boyfriend teach you. Get professional training from a female instructor. Women are excellent shooting students, you will do well.

The real meaning of that sign is "Rob this place. It is full of defenseless victims."

I had a gun at home after I broke up with a very mentally unbalanced man AND was often home alone.

Carrying it in my car wasn't an issue at the time. I would warn people to just carry the gun with them at all times when in the car or away from home- burgling a car to get a free gun is the best case scenario for a thief, aside from managing to steal the whole car or truck. A stolen gun is pretty dangerous....

I know exactly what you mean. A professional will have several guns for you to try. It is easy to get a fit with a revolver as you don't have to reach around the magazine. Also, you should start with a .22, and they are usually smaller. As you progress you can move to a larger handgun.

That is a .38 revolver. You can see how the grips can be skinny on a revolver.

    Here is a prettier one.

I have seen an 8 year old girl handle a standard Glock 19 easily. Worst case you can get a trigger shortening kit for Glocks, which will shorten the distance for you to reach the trigger.

A lot of men try to tell women they need a revolver, and a lot of women think the smaller the gun the easier it is to use.

The bigger/heavier the gun for any given bullet size the easier it is to handle because the weight of the gun absorbs the recoil. A Glock 19 is probably the best beginner self defence gun ever made. Has a 13 bullet magazine, is hyper-reliable(check youtube torture test videos) It is super simple to operate(very few buttons to control) and 9mm ammo is cheap compared to everything else in its size/power range. so you can afford to practice.

Get a good pro trainer, and not just the basic concealed carry class. Get a weekend full training defensive/fighting package. "Knowing how to operate a gun doesn't mean you know how or when to use it."
Guns are nothing to be afraid of or uncomfortable to have around, they are basic machines.

^^Yes, and for someone new to shooting, it would be a good idea to take more than one weekend of instruction. As she becomes proficient she can select what she needs. She should know there are a lot of options.

^^ Concealed class, several trips to the range, then a shoot all day weekend training class, then a fuckload more range time practising the stuff from the training class, Wash, rinse, repeat! ;-)

^^Seems like far too many who enjoy shooting or own guns need to be told to practice. :S

People if you're going to own a gun, please keep in mind shooting is a perishable hand/eye fine motor skill. Practice dammit! :-P

Well, problem is that most places that are cool with open carry, it's your other "weapons" they don't want out in public view...

    Nobody messes with Melonie.

Word. They are not magical talismans; one has to be confident of being in control of both mechanicals and mindset in case it's needed.

I have concealed carry. Nevada. One on me. One in the car. One in the bedroom. One in my studio. I only cam. I have trained on the range. If somebody comes at me. I will kill them. No problem.
