You know slowpoke, when you get us our big ranch and we move in together, you can do all the hunting. I'll be getting a tan on the sundeck by the pool.
Look at the top one. See how the barrel and slide have interlocking notches, and there is a link (hinge) under the barrel that pulls it down so those notches disconnect from the notches on the slide. I know that animation moves kind of fast, it was what I could find.

    Here is a slower animation.

The first locked breech gun I showed you was a Colt Model 1911. It was invented by John M. Browning and adopted as the US Army’s handgun in 1911. They are still building them.

Here is a slow animation of a Glock. See how the barrel and slide move back together until the barrel hits a kind of wedge which moves it down out of alignment with the slide. Note the Colt pivots on a link, while the Glock uses a kind of wedge.

Though it won't be much help in a situation unless I'm actively holing it in my hand.
Won't be much help if I need to fumble through me back searching for it.
Also, keep in mind if you use it & it's windy, it may blow bk in your face. I had actual police mace, until I brought it to a concert & lost it.
I also had one of those panic siren things, but it lost its pin & wasn't loud anyway @ all.

The best defense gun in your home is a shotgun.
The best defense gun in your bedroom is a shot barrel .357 revolver with lazer grip.
You should always practice with your daily carry weapon.
If you can't access your carry weapon immediately, might as well not carry it.

    make sense?

Astonishingly, some states may regulate pepper spray, may consider it a “weapon” and (for all I know) may attach criminal penalties to its possession and use.
