I am scared I am just the world's biggest bitch. This situation confirmed my fears- was I in the wrong?
11 p.m- I came home at 9 and noticed how cold it was in my new house (renting a room inside a house) I try and stick it out but it's just too cold. I turn on the thermostat and up 4 degrees.
I come out a few minutes later and notice it was turned off. I thought it was my other roommate who just went to bed who turned it off on his way. My landlord/roommate was sleeping, I figured it couldn't have been her and he went to bed too. So i turned it back on with the intention of turning it off after I got the chill out of my freezing self.
I come out later to find a note that said "Do not touch thermostat. Talk to me if you have a problem with the temp." I wrote a note in response, "freezing and did not have chance to buy space heater. perhaps leave it on and talk tomorrow."
Landlord knocks on my door within a minute. Apparently, she said, every little noise wakes her up, even the heat kicking on. We talk respectfully but she tends to ramble and during the conversation said that it was rude that i touched the thermostat and that she would 'never touch the thermostat in someone else's home' and that it was disrespectful for me to turn it back on after she had turned it off.
Maybe in someone else's house but I felt that I was within reason to turn it on for a night since I pay rent here, and I explained why in the note. Also, I told her, that the first night I moved in it had to been in the 50's in my room and it's been cold night after night since then. But now I'm questioning this decision. Was I out of line or within reason?
