Default keeping a cat out of a room without a door?

So I recently got a new kitten and while he is wonderful, he is the neediest cat I have ever met in my life. He follows me everywhere around the house, I mean if I take a shower he sits on the toilet and watches. He sleeps on my stomach every night and I've stepped on him about 4 times because when I walk he's always at my heels. If he doesn't get attention, he will sit and meow for up to an hour. There have been times where he's meowed and meowed just because he was not being held.

I went back to work on Sunday (escorting at the moment) and am having serious issues with him. I live in a split level apartment so there is no way to close the bedroom off from the living room (downstairs). There are two bathrooms, a very small one with a toilet and one with a shower-- I put him in the lower one as my clients need to use the shower. I usually give him a treat to settle him down a bit, but he will WHINE and WHINE for up to a half hour. Some of my clients have been fine with it and have wanted to see him, and others have looked really irritated and annoyed. He eventually calms down, but it's not very attractive!

Besides drugging him, the only thing I can think is to get something to block off the opening upstairs so that he will have a larger area to wander around. I've gone online and have found some 'pet barriers' which I guess deliver electric shock to the cats, but I don't want him to never be able to come upstairs. I've seen some dog indoor barriers, but I feel like a cat will crawl up those. I'm only going to escort for another four weeks so I'm not looking to invest in something crazy expensive, but do any of your pet owners have any suggestions?

Has your cat been neutered? That may help for the cry for attention.

No, he's only two months and they refuse to do it until 6 months here. The vet said if I was adamant about doing it earlier they might consider doing it at 4 months but that would be the earliest.

I feel a cat could crawl up a baby gate? I feel like it would have to be solid or metal or something?

I had to get one for my little chi. Usually the barrier will keep him from coming down, usually he wont think about climbing it unless hes super smart. XD but it worked for my dog, he saw it as an obstacle and after hopping for a few minutes went on his way.

We stack two baby gates - one on top of the other - to create a 'door' in a hallway. You're right though...he might simply climb up them. But it'd only be a $10 failed experiment or so - baby gates are very cheap at Walmart. And you can return them if they don't work out. I think they also may sell some nicer baby gates that would be less climbable? I'm not sure.

OK I am a dog person but, try crate training. get one of those little cat crates, and when you are home alone, lock him up for no reason. Briefly. See if he will get used to it and not cry excessively. Increase time period. repeat

The idea is to get to the point where the animal gives up crying and then you can reward the silence by letting them out and treats.

if getting him in is troublesome try feed him in there

having a cat that is satisfied in a crate is pretty useful for a mobile individual

Get a 2nd cat. He sounds lonely, so maybe adopting another cat who is a little older (less than a year) will give him someone to hang out with. Cats are so much easier when you have 2.

This. I noticed a huge difference between having one cat & having two. I was still Cat#1's favourite & he would follow me into the bathroom like b4 but he was a lot less obnoxious abt it when there was another cat to bother they are independent but still largely social. He may also be stressed by the amt of ppl you have coming & going so another cat may ease that stress.

I know from personal experience that a baby gate won't work very well. I've had cats and kittens my whole life and that was the first thing our family tried with our first cat and they figure out how to climb/jump over it pretty quick. You can use it for kittens 6-12 weeks tops, by around 3 months they are big enough and can jump high enough to get over it:/ Does your kitty like water? My cat doesn't mind it (a side affect from bathing him since he was a kitten--hinthint) but if your cat hates water the easiest way to train them not to do stuff is get a spray bottle and start spraying. Every time he goes upstairs. He'll stop pretty quick. You can also get these air canister things that squirt shots of air at them and are motion-sensing activated. You could get four and put them by the staircase. However make sure to warn clients/friends as the noise they make is kind of loud and can scare people too haha. My family used a combination of those two to keep the cats out of the living room with the good furniture for years And it had no doors!

The second cat thing can work wonders or go horribly wrong. If you take this approach, definitely introduce them before making any binding agreement, or make sure you have a new home for the second cat lined up just in case. Sometimes the older cat is still kitten like, but just playing can be terrifying to the younger one because it's so much smaller. I actually had a slightly older cat beat the crap out of my little one once so they had to be separated ASAP. But when it works out, everyone is happier.

The problem with getting a second cat is that my place is REALLY small, it's not a big apartment or anything, and I just feel like two cats would be too much to deal with and they wouldn't have enough space. And two cats whining in the bathroom?? Ugh I don't even want to imagine. I got two kittens at the same time a few years ago and they were in love with each other and spent every minute together, but I was living in a house then, not a one bedroom apartment.

He has been HORRIBLE today, like whined straight through two of my appointments, it's so incredibly awkward. I also worry about him being so loud that the neighbors will start to complain, and he's not even supposed to be here, he's a secret cat. I was hoping that he would start to get used to being down there and relax, but it seems he's getting worse!

If you use a baby gate just tilt it so the top is leaning towards the room he is in so he can't climb up it. When he gets old enough to jump over it stack a second on top of it if he is still having the issue.

Also putting an automatic toy in the room with him should help keep him happy. They have things like laser pointers or birds etc that kittens always love.

I'd probably drug him, but then I'm not a cat person AT ALL.

How to keep the cat out? You don't! Remember they own us. They do what they want, jump up where they want, demand to be petted, will sit on your keyboard...while your typing....

I love my fuzzies, got 3 and I have to keep the door shut and sometimes they will meow and scratch for what seems like hours.

Actually not a bad idea. I know they sell pheromone plug-ins here in the US. Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Feliway-Plug-I.../dp/B000WHUOEI

You should be able to buy it in spray form! Spray it on his favorite bed or blanket and leave him in the bathroom with it.

That may work. If not, try adding a little methadone to a bowl of warm milk.

Cats, and especially kittens require very exact doses of medications. Drugging your cat can easily kill it. Please don't do this.
There are better ways to keep your cat out of your bedroom than killing it.

Exactly the reason I had to give up my beloved apartment with the spiral staircase and loft bedroom. When my roommate moved in she brought a long a cat I didn't know she had. No matter what kind of baby gate, barrier, whatever I put up to try to keep her out of my door-less bedroom she could get in. And then shit on everything. I don't know what the hell kind of health problems that cat had but it ruined many of my possessions, including several sets of sheets, and my roommate seemed unwilling to do anything about it. I decided to move for my own mental and physical well being, but I felt really cheated since I had been in that apartment longer and felt like if anyone was going to move, it should have been my roommate and her devil cat.

So... I don't have any good advice I guess but at least your kitten isn't pooping everywhere, Audrey! That's a plus, right?

You could try putting this http://www.amazon.com/Contech-StayAw.../dp/B000DZFFN4 by the doorway/hall you don't want him to go down. Cats hate being blown on, and the sound of the compressed air will also deter him. It might stress him out or confuse him though, because he won't know when he's allowed to be with you in that room or otherwise. And as BobbleHead said, if you're going to go the gate route, make it angled. Cats jump up and forward. They can jump onto or over most gates that just come up from the ground at a 90-degree angle. However, if the gate goes up at 90-degree angle, then slants around 45-degrees towards the room you're trying to keep him in, he will look up to get his jump straight, see something above him, and get pissy and realize he can't safely make the jump.

Other suggestions for making the bathroom more alluring: put a heating pad on low under a blanket or cat bed with an item of your clothing in it. Cats LOVE heated blankets and things with your scent. Turn on some soft music in there with him. It's soothing and masks the sounds of you moving around without him. Make him associate the bathroom with treats. While actual milk will fuck his stomach up, you can get cat-friendly "milk" in pet stores that he will love.
