As someone else mentioned, the best option you have (besides getting a second kitty) is to crate him. You can pile it with blankets so he can be comfy. You'll have to practice it with him when you don't have clients though. Good news--kittens grow out of this stage. Bad news--it takes time.

When I first got my cat, I had a roommate who insisted on keeping her door open 24/7 but only HER CAT and not mine being allowed in... it took me maybe two weeks but I was able to train him away from the room by gently nudging him away from the doorway/spraying NEAR him (I never actually sprayed HIM) with water if he actually went in. After maybe a week he picked up the association that he wasn't allowed in that room. During this time, I made sure to positively reinforce the associations with other rooms. "Oh you came to the living room! Good boy! Have treats!"
I also kept all of his toys cat play houses in the room I wanted him in most of the time. I ONLY played with him away from the room he wasn't allowed in and only held/pet him in rooms he was allowed in. This can be a pain if you tend to let him sleep with you in the room you're trying to keep him out of, but cats, like dogs, CAN be trained. [Sometimes quesionably - For example, I trained my cat not to fucking bite/scratch me... and to this day, no matter what he WON'T... but he still scratches/bitches other people because I never taught him not to do that.]
One of THE KEYS to training kittens, for me, is to always always ALWAYS reward good behavior. Cats tend to respond to negative reinforcement badly, and positive VERY well. Feed him 2-3 times a day in a room downstairs, only play with him downstairs, make him a nice comfy bed with lots of toys downstairs, when you're home - spend your free time downstairs... center his entire life in ONE ROOM. If you spray catnip... do it in that room. Cats are REALLY independent (after the first few months)... if he has sufficient entertainment in that ONE ROOM, he won't need to be around you as much. But, again, baby kitty... they're GONNA be well clingy for a while.

I agree a cat can be trained. I have a kitten now & I don't want all my furniture destroyed with claw marks. I have a scratching post & stuff I don't mind her clawing. A spray bottle has been the best detourant & she's learning where to scratch.
