Default Older Computer and SM encoder

I have a 2009 HP entertainment PC. I looked up the specks and it says I have and i7 processor, and around 2g ram.

I know the laptop is old but do you girls think it can handle the SM encoder?

My only other issue is my laptop gets hot really quick. So I'm worried about that.

Is there anyway to test the encoder without going live?

I'm trying to save up for a new laptop, possibly finicace it if needed. The laptop is around $2,300.

My internet speed is 50 download and 1.5 upload speed. (I plan on upping this once I'm making some money)

I have the Logitech C290 webcam, and good lighting.

My only other question is does it look Bad If I use multiple computers to stream from. My roomie has a good laptop I can use sometimes when he doesn't need it. Or would I just be better off seeing if I qualify to finance a new one.

Thanks for the advice. I read in another thread that a newer computer with i7 processor & 4g ram is best. Couldn't find much on older computers.

I cam from an i3 laptop. My internet is wireless, 17-20 down and barely 1 up. I have no problems using the HD encoder.

I cam from a dual core laptop Toshiba satellite, it works with HD encorder. yes it runs slow I think it needs more RAM. I am hoping to get myself a new machine soon at least a quad core or higher for around $500 desktop.

Thanks for the replies ladies Tonight is going to be my first night so hopefully it goes well. I feel better knowing you guys can still use the HD encoder.

Get a cooling pad. to help in the meantime. I suggest to also use it when you get your new lappytops

^^^ in the final analysis, the speed achieved by a computer when running the SM encoder ... or any other 'high intensity' program for that matter ... has little to do with the actual age of the computer. It has to do with processor speed capability, adequate memory, speed rating of interface port between camera and computer, etc.

A five year old Intel I7 processor is still plenty fast enough to run the SM encoder without introducing 'lag'

2 gigs of memory is most likely too little to allow the SM encoder to process data 'efficiently'. Having all available memory full, thus forcing the processor to take the additional step of 'swapping' data, can result in significant 'lag'. However, this is easily and cheaply 'fixable' via plugging additional memory modules into open sockets, or by replacing existing 2 gig memory modules with 4-8 gig memory modules.

Generally speaking, using a USB 2.0 port on a 5 year old computer versus a 'new' computer for camera data transmission won't have any major difference in 'throughput' capability. USB 3.0 ports available on 'new' computers have significantly higher 'throughput' capabilities, though. However, in point of fact, most of the 'consumer grade' webcams in use today can't actually transmit video data as fast as a USB 3.0 port would allow.
