For better or worse, this is a 'problem' that results from rising audience expectations and improving movie 'technology' with time. Classic horror example is 'The Exorcist', which when first released literally scared the s#!t out of audiences, but if viewed today seems almost 'camp'.And even that doesn't seem scary when I rewatch it out of context.
This is very true, I try to look at movies and think about what was common at the time, some of the special effects of movies from 1910 to 1960 are amazing for their time. Watch http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053559/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051744/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0010323/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0012364/ at night alone, and trust me they are truly scary films, and their special effects are so good.
Though I will say, 70s/80s/early 90s are probably my favorite horror special effects time period.

I agree with the ring! Even today I can't watch her come out of the TV or look at the girl's face in the closet haha. And the end of the first Saw when the guy leaves the other one stuck in the bathroom with him screaming was so creepy to me I felt sick after. lol I love scary movies!

Ooooh, I haven't seen The Phantom Carriage. It sounds awesome, though. Movies Cat People or White Zombie also had quite scary effects for their time. They just look cheesy now, though, like Melonie said.
One thing I like about the found footage trend in some newer horror movies is that it relies less on special effects that can become cheesy over time, and more on traditional camera techniques to create the spooky effects. As well as just, you know, regular old bump in the night type scares. For me, less is often more with horror movies. What's not there is usually scarier than what is. That's why I like creepy pasta so much.So simple, but so creepy.
Also, these shorts are great:
There's a lot of good horror shorts on youtube now, it seems like. Too bad I'm at my parents' this weekend and their internet connection is too slow to load them
There's one my fave (long) creepypastas for good measure:

Some people hate it for its colloquial grammar, liberal use of profantiy, etc, but I think it's awesome.
Sorry if this is a little off topic, but I'm just getting into the Halloween spirit.

I know a lot of ppl found this movie really corny, but me and my sister almost left the theater bc we couldn't take it any more. But we were also too damn chicken to get up from a dark movie theater room. Lol. Paranormal 2. I didn't see part one.
I couldn't sleep in the dark for about 2-3 weeks. I was also afraid of looking at the kitchen cabinets thinking they would pop. Lol. I was even scared to be home alone during the day. It was horrible. It made me sware off horror movies for a long time, but who am I kidding? ? Love horror films.
Like this one -
A short supernatural horror about a lone hotel worker who starts to feel a strange presence after being forced to work the late shift. Questioning whether it's a supernatural force, human or simply his mind playing tricks, he becomes increasingly paranoid and erratic in his actions. Will our young hero's curiosity get the better of him?
I agree!! The scene with the girl in the closet is the worst one. It just pops out at you. I saw the movie on TV the other day and I STILL covered my eyes during that part, ugh. This is it, if you haven't seen it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBtHBWs0__g

Well, the entire "Idiocracy" movie is quite scary, IMO.
