Default how to get your hair to keep the curl?

I love curling my hair, I hate the way it looks when it's straight, and I've been doing it for years. But I've noticed lately that the curl keeps falling out within a couple hours-- sometimes I have to curl it twice a day, early in the day for a client and later on if I go out with my bf. We went to a party last Friday and I saw pictures of myself at the end of the night and the curl was almost gone, that was like not even 4 hours. I'm completely destroying my hair extensions with all the heat multiple times a day.

Basically I separate it into three sections, hold a small piece for 10 seconds in the iron, and then release. Every 4 or so pieces I spray the shit out of with hair spray, and I used the firmest one.

Does anyone have advice for stopping the curl from falling out?

When you buy new ones try not to heat style them as much. Use rollers and let them set overnight. Either that or just buy curly extensions?

Does hair spray help? Is it the humidity or what there?

^not sure, it's always been an issue for me but it definitely is more so here, I think partly cause of the rain and the fact that you sweat a lot cause you have layers on and then go down into the tube where it's warm, so much walking, etc. It's just driving me nuts, I feel like I waste an hour curling my hair cause it just looks like shit 3 hours later! I seriously go through a bottle of hair spray a week.

I hear really good things about the brand, 'Living Proof'..my hair dresser used it on me, & it really seemed to last..although I wasn't dealing w/the conditions you mentioned, it was in summer a couple months ago when he used it on me. It's got some new scientific breakthru ingredient that protects/holds styles in high humidity.

Pretty sure this's what he used http://www.sephora.com/instant-textu...?skuId=1635275

I'm not sure why or if this is just me, but every time I curl with a curling iron, my curls are gonzo after a few hours. I recently have started curling with a straightener and my curls last forever! With little product too! Also, I'm sure you know this, but if my hair is really clean, they don't hold as well as if my hair is at least a day dirty/hasn't been washed in a day. I hairspray right after I'm done with a section before the curls cool off and then I will put a little serum or coconut oil (very little) in my palms, flip hair over, run fingers through, fluff, and I swear they even lasted me through 6 hours of dancing at the club the other night.

Also, I heard that L'oreal Elnet hairspray's good. I myself use rollers (for volume/straightening) I think it lasts better w/those too.
    What about those curling shampoos/conditioners?

When I use curling iron or stylist uses curling iron, it rarely stays after a few hours.

When I use rollers and dampen my hair a bit and sleep in them overnight, the curls last up to 3 days.

I have long hair so I think the weight of my hair pulls the curl down after a couple hours after using curling iron. Only way they stay is if the curl is pinned up to my head then I release the curl when I'm ready

I have a friend who does all kinds of pin-up inspired styles and a lot of them involve having curled hair for long periods of time. I asked what brand she recommended for longevity of curls and she swears by Vintage Glam curling cream and thermal freeze spray. I've used the latter product once and found that it worked very well to keep my hairstyle in place. I've also found bobby pins to be lifesavers when it comes to keeping complicated styles intact.

Leave the curler on for longer (maybe 45 seconds) and out on hair spray while it's in the curler. And after as well

It may also be the length &/or texture of your hair. Mine is very fine, & when it's shoulder-ish-length like right now, it holds the waves that set in from having it twisted in a bun or clip much better than my preferred longer lengths. The fact that it's so fine tho, still gives me problems w/ hold + frizz out the ass. It holds waves better, as I said, but still won't curl worth a damn. Maybe going for looser waves instead of full curls would be a good lower-maintenance compromise?

This is my favorite hairspray ever, hands down. I use it to keep my curls in place after using my wand. The best part is that it doesn't make your hair stiff, it's light and it holds. Plus you can just brush it out at the end of the night and it leaves your hair shiny. Highly recommend.

What's the length of your hair and texture (ie. fine, thin, wavy, frizzy) audrey?

Dry your hair. Put mousse on it (cheap is fine). Brush it out. Curl it. This does the trick!

If you have a day off: Give your extensions a good wash and them literally throw them in a zip lock back with conditioner and soak them ALL NIGHT.
Take them out in the morning, rinse them in cool water, roll them up in a towel and squeeze to get out excess moisture. I normally let mine sit for an hour or so and then take them out, lightly oil them, roll them up in pin curls and let them air dry.

I never have to recurl them ever. They honestly hold curl for a week+ without any issues (Yeah, I'm gross, w/e. I don't wash them if I just wore them to go sit at dinner or something and don't feel like they're dirty)... My lighter colored set I'm not currently using has been sitting on my bathroom counter for... over a month? and they're still curled perfectly.

For the rest of your hair... you could be using products that are too heavy and pulling the curl down. Or could you have switched to a product not ideal for curling? Also. Smaller sections. Like. TINY sections and pin the curl up until it cools completely. Don't go so heavy on the spray, because the weight/moisture can also have a negative effect on curls.

anelia is right, hair texture is huge. the bottom layer of my hair is straight and won't' hold a curl worth shit, but the top layer is extremely thick, coarse, and almost kinky and it will hold one until i decide to wash it..it could hold a curl for a week straight. so i'm guessing that yours is on the straighter side. i did a lot of reading myself on this, and here is what i read
if your hair is damaged, its also very hard for it to hold curls, so make sure you are babying the shit out of it.
the more freshly washed your hair is, the harder it will be. 2nd or 3rd day hair is best, so use dry shampoo in between washes, but when you do wash, use a good mousse and texturizer.
sleep in a braid the night before to get some good texture going before you bring out your wand/curling iron.
blow dry upside down with a diffuser.
do very small sections, i'd suggest one of those curling wands.
unlike flat ironing your hair, you want to start from the top and work your way down!
they also say, twirl it all up in bobby pins to let it cool, and when its totally cool use your hairspray. don't let hot curls go limp.

It's a really easy solution, same thing happened to me until I learned ( being styled on my wedding day) that you first manually ( with curling iron)curl the hair then either pin the curl or roll the curl in a Velcro roller and keep the curls in the rollers or pins until they are completely cooled. Curls that are allowed to cool, will stay hours ( I have very thick hair and the curls stayed from 2pm till 11 pm) you can spray with hair spray after.

Thanks for the advice ladies, I'll definitely try some of the hair sprays mentioned and also pinning the curls. I was reading online you should wait for the curl to cool before spraying as well. I've tried using rollers and am just not that into the look as much because I feel like I have less control, but it would definitely be better and save me £ on hair extensions (which suck in the UK btw).

It's my very long, 20" hair extensions that I can't get to curl. I cut them down to 18" and noticed a huge difference.

I spray each section of my hair with hairspray, brush it threw and then curl the hair, pin each curl with a bobby pin to wait for the hair to cool before taking the bobby pin out and then spray again with hairspray. Also, some hair extensions don't curl good Ive learned.

I just use extra hold hairspray (can't name a specific nrand, I'll just get one that says "firm hold" or "extra hold" and it also will usually say anti-frizz or something too).

For work, I curl my hair along with my clip ins - divide my hair into sections and after I'm done curling a section I spray the section with hairspray and keep going using that routine. Then when I'm completely done curling and spraying, I spray the entire finished product thoroughly. Sometimes halfway through the night or so I'll spray it down again to keep the hold but it usually more or less stays in style - and my hair is VERY difficult to manage so that says a lot! My hair is very vulnerable to humidity and whatnot but when I style it as described I seldom have problems.

Also, I used a curling wand. IMO they're wayyy better than regular curling iron. And I hold the hair in place on the heat for about 8 seconds.

My curls used to NEVER stay in place until I started using that method and the right products.

I'm seriously thinking of getting mine permed at a good salon. I've seen a few decent pics of permed extensions online. Hairdressers can do beautiful bouncy waves with a perm, not just 80s ringlets. The only issue is making sure the extensions are very high quality since most brands just bleach the hair out to hell then dye them to the end color, even if that means unnecessarily bleaching from brown to blonde to brown again. But the plus side is that if they survive the perm, you won't have to heat style again. I'll let you know how it goes if I ever get my cheap/lazy ass to the salon.

By the sounds of it your extensions have had too much heat styling and are wrecked. The trim probably got rid of some of the most damaged hair, as well as the extra weight. I get my hair from www.cliphair.co.uk I get the double wefted straight ones coz my hair is thick and they're great. But they've also got wavy and curly extensions.

You mentioned on my bob thread that you get your extensions professionally cut, right? Did your stylist thin them out much at the ends? I noticed a crazy improvement in staying power after I got mine not just layered but thinned out a bunch with those little toothy scissors, dunno the name.

So using mouse has been the best method for me-- I've tried pinning the curls with mouse and they stay even longer, that just increases the amount of time it takes me to do my hair by double, so can't do it all the time.

My hair extensions are brand new so it's not that. I've always had issues with this.
