Thumbs down Pain in the ball of the foot?

Since last weekend I haven't been able to put weight on the ball of my foot without experiencing extreme pain. The pain started at work a week ago, but I didn't do anything to hurt it i.e. fall, hit it on something, sprain my ankle etc. Has anyone experienced this long term and if so what caused it/how did you treat it (I have tried icing it, applying cream, resting it, using shoe inserts and have made a doctor's appointment for next week because I'm at a loss)?

Yeah, I've had this. In fact right now in my right foot. I have a pair of gym shoes that seam to do this. I also stepped on something. maybe you stepped on something and hurt it and didn't think twice about it because it didn't really hurt at the time. I'm not sure a doctor will really help. Unless you have a broken bone they'll probably just tell you to wrap it like one time when I went to a podiatrist for something. Not really sure? it could be from shoes or like I said you could have stepped on sonethong and not really gave it a thought. Maybe try to massage it and see if that helps. Hope you get better.

Also. Is there a small cut? This happened to me. I stepped on the metal part of the vacum cleaner and it was fine. Then like a week later I couldn't even walk on it and looked and it had a hole with a ring around it and it was infected. It hurt like hell. I had to take an antibiotic and it was better in a few weeks. maybe you got something in it?

Thanks Michele, there's no cut fortunately. I may have stepped on something or landed on it funny and not realised at the time I guess (I went straight from the gym to work, so it's very possible I injured it and then aggravated the injury, even though it didn't hurt at the time :/).

I agree, I don't think the doctor will help either. I'm going to go just in case though-it's been a week already, so it's better to be safe than sorry .

I notice that when I work a lot, my feet do this, and it always ends up being something I can feel, like a hard lump in my bone that you can massage out. I'm not sure what they are, but they always go away.

I think their calcium deposits. My sister has one on her spine and the doctor said there was nothing they could do. Good to know massage might help.

i have plantar fascitis and it sucks - take a tennis ball or a soda/water bottle and fill it with water and freeze it - put it on the floor and roll your foot over it to help stretch it out - also doing a runners stretch helps - it takes a long time to heal

I had this happen to me in my 20's when I was working on my feet for at least 8 hours per day. I finally (had to) break down and go to a foot doctor. I had a stress fracture and had to stay off of my feet for something like 3 to 6 months.

I used to get this alot when I worked on my feet in retail. The balls of my feet were super painful.

The podiatrist gave me a simple exercise that really helped. Would a podiatrist be more helpful than a doctor? They specialise in feet.

Take a cold cylinder style bottle, place it on the floor. Then roll your sore foot up and down over the cylinder. So that the cylinder rolls forwards and backwards.

I used to use a beer bottle/deodorant can.

I would do it multiple times per day for about 2-5 minutes at time. Sometimes upto 10 times a day. It really helped!

Sounds like a pressure-related injury to me. What shoes do you wear to work? Is there a steep incline between the heel and the toe? Most heels (stripper and civilian alike) are built to put a ton of pressure on the ball of the foot. Exercising (dancing) in heels makes the risk of incurring stress fractures and all sorts of issues much more likely.

Is much healthier (albeit somewhat less sexy) than a shoe like this: http://snaz75.com/pl-sky-302.html

^That's what my doctor thinks it might be (I have to go back and get xrays if it isn't 100% by next week ). It is a lot better atm, as I have rested it for a week.

^The doctor hopes it's just bruised etc from running (and also from work) so fingers crossed it isn't serious. I wear regular 6 inch pleasure heels (I panicked last week and bought 5 inch shoes recently, but after trying them on I think the incline is actually higher and therefore they may be worse. I will probably sell them actually). Thanks for the shoe recommendations (I had some like the black ones when I first started lol, I will order some and see how I go if it heals soon .

Thanks to everyone for your advice and for replying x

^ I hope it's not fractured. I'm going through this right now with my wrist. I had surgery 2 and a half weeks ago. I can't lift more than a pound and I can't put full weight on it for 3 months. I don't think it is, if it felt better after you rested it because my wrist is still painful and I'm at 5 weeks since I broke it. good luck.

I did hear you can get Botox in the ball of your foot to alleviate pain...

Wow. Yeah, I had the same problem for the last 7 or so years (out of 20 in clubs), also in my right foot. Besides the terrible pain there was this "clicking" feeling present. It got so bad that it was getting difficult to do long cardio sessions at the gym. Working in high heels was awful too because of the sharp pain, I put double inserts in shoes for every shift and often took Tylenol. I was finally diagnosed with Morton's neuroma not too long ago, and decided to get the surgery. The doc said that this happens to people who wear high heels and to athletes. Yes, I used a cane to walk for maybe 10 days after surgery, but about 2.5 weeks later I already started short gym workouts. The entire healing process took a little over a month. There is a big BUT here... The surgery is not for everyone and may have serious complications and can make things worse for some people. There will also be permanent numbness in toes next to incision. Plus alternative methods might be enough to solve the issue. It was worth it to me personally, but might not be a good option for someone else.
The best plan should be to see a podiatrist and then decide on what to do about the pain. Hopefully it is something not as serious, and is easily treatable!

I get this when I've been working a lot. Lately it hasn't been bothering me as much. Being a dancer as well as wearing heels excessively. Resting it is the best thing to for now, while it's still sore, and perhaps ice. I'm going to start getting regular massages and explain to the masseuse what my issue is.

Any LMT working on a dancer should also be working on their calves, glutes (including piriformis), QLs (quadratus lumborum muscles), and quads. Physiologically, those are the muscles that stripper shoes tend to shorten (when we tilt our butts upward, we lengthen our hamstrings and shorten our quads due to pelvic tilt - so overstretched hamstrings often get wrongly blamed for issues caused by shortened quads).

I'd also look into ways to strengthen the muscles in your feet - specifically the ones maintaining your arches. I personally transitioned to wearing Vibrams (do your research first) to strengthen my feet, and many of the poses in yoga help with this as well (balancing poses especially).
