Default What do you do to keep yourself in good shape?

As for me, I’ve chosen going to the Gym regularly.
The hardest thing for me is that I need to stay away from junk food. As far away as possible ☺ My diet is low calorie – a lot of vegetables, fruit and white meat. I’m trying to stay around about 1600 calories which makes me feel hungry all the time.

I tried going to the gym but ended up bored to death...
So, I found an awesome Caribbean dance studio and go to classes that mix up Reggaeton, Dancehall and Twerk techniques and give you an absolutely awesome workout. Way better than any gym and the stuff we learn is actually practical... if you know what I mean lol.

I set up a home gym ... treadmill, TotalGym, stair-climber, free weights / resistance bands ... as well as a low power tanning bed. I found that the amount of time and gas money I was spending getting 'cleaned up', driving to a member gym, working out ( and tanning ), driving back again, and getting 'cleaned up' again, was a real DIS-incentive for a regular workout ( and tanning ) schedule.

Having a home gym available knocked out the early morning getting 'cleaned up' requirement ( nobody cares if I don't have hair and makeup done ), as well as the drive in both directions. It also meant that, rather than being bored to death ( and/or dealing with testosterone ) at a member gym, working out at home also allowed me to listen to 'business channel' news at the same time ( versus having to do this separately after returning home ).

I used to hate going to the gym, and now I love it.

When I was super commited I joined a small group boot camp at the gym. I felt soooo good but this was so expensive it was like extra $150 per month on top of standard gym membership. Plus like melonie mentioned to her previous situation, this gym is a long drive away from my home which really sucks and I couldn't keep up the schedule.

I make sure to walk at least a mile a day, cut back on refined sugars and fatty (bad fat) foods and heavy meats like pork sausages. no dairy for me and increase in leafy green vegetables.

I happen to love dancing so I practice around the house to get cardio at home.

To start, you should eat when you feel hungry.

And to stay motivated I would find an exercise that you enjoy and doesn't feel like a chore. If treadmilling it and weight machines at a traditional gym are not working for you, try some classes.

    Agree here, on both points.

Eat when you feel hungry OP, just choose the healthy foods you mentioned & be mindful of your portions. I find a few days of ingesting nothing but leek soup, water & cranberry juice does wonders to flush me out & get my metabolism revved up. If you are trying to combine a low-calorie diet w/ several days a wk at the gym, you're setting yourself up for either a) constantly fighting hunger b) nutritional inefficiency/increased difficulty recovering from workouts or c) both. Remember, Excess in Moderation!

as far as the gym, I have always thought it's kind of overrated. Take classes like lynn2009 suggests -- anything from pilates to krav maga or taking up a physical hobby such as rollerblading/ice skating. My personal favourites: martial arts & POLE even tho I am not doing much of anything atm

Handstand pushups (a lot of them), chinups, a special technique I developed using resistance bands in a boxing workout, and the pole. There's a few other things but that is basically it, & seems to be working pretty well.

I totally agree about eating when hungry. I lost weight easily when I stopped caring about eating at specific times (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and started eating only when my stomach told me that I must. It's really worth watching whether it's your stomach telling you you're hungry or it's just your eyes (seeing something delicious makes you the wrong kind of hungry )

Default Re: What do you do to keep yourself in good shape?

    Several things:

I started being big on the tracking and accountability thing. I have a fitbit, log my meals on MyFitnessPal, and downloaded Gympact. I have my goals on gympact set to 4 days a week working out at $5 lost per missed workout (you can log this by checking into a gym via GPS, using the phone as a motion tracker, or syncing 10,000 steps from your fitbit). I have a food diary pact set to 4 days of logging food properly on MyFitnessPal (these apps can all sync up), at $5 per day missed, so that keeps me on top of that. It really does make a difference to see concretely in front of you how many calories you consume every day or from certain things. And I have a veggie/fruit pact set to 7 veggies/fruits a week at $5 per missed day, so that forces me to consciously make the decision to have at least one meal a day be veggie/fruit focused. I really think having these things to keep me focused and accountable really really helped me get serious.

I joined a gym and started downloading a bunch of books to my tablet instead of buying paper copies so I could knock out a bunch of catching up on my reading while cycling or on the treadmill. I also download a bunch of youtube videos in the mornings when I'm doing my morning internet browsing and set them aside, so that 2 days a week I do strength training with weights and a kettlebell at home while listening to the videos I wanted to hear.

I also briefly followed the gist of a diet called 8 weeks to wellness for a short time. I basically cut out fruit, bread, most processed foods, and alcohol for a week and only ate certain vegetables. It was easy to do for a short period of time and then ease back in with new habits. Since adding these things back in, I still try to keep my servings of bread to one a day, if any, still eat more veggies than fruits, and I have drastically cut down on my alcohol intake and eating out - god, I used to eat out sooo much. Another thing that helped with that was taking the time, every week, to look at my bank statement and add up how much I had spent on going on or ordering delivery or fast food. It was disgusting how much money I was wasting or how many nights a week I was drinking and then grabbing shitty Taco Bell. It really forced me to face it and be repulsed by it, and gave me the incentive of saving money as well as being healthier to eat at home and refrain from drinking.

Now, I'm trying to add in one day a week (generally Sundays) where I make a bunch of pre-made meals like mason jar salads, batches of soup and curry, muffin-tin eggs, because one of my biggest downfalls is still my lack of motivation to take 20 minutes to prep a meal if I only have 30 minutes before I need to run out the door again or I'm starving and just want food now.

Since starting this plan to finally get serious about losing weight, I've dropped 7 pounds in 2 months when I had been stuck at the same weight for 3 years before that. I've even been slightly slacking off on my no-eating out/no-alcohol thing a lot more since starting to become more social again, and I'm still dropping weight by keeping other things in check and having incentive to get back on track if I slip one day. For me, it was more a matter of real structure that would help me keep up a relatively easy routine rather than any one specific exercise or diet that I would have to force myself through indefinitely without loving it.

Also, I know my biggest thing is food being tied to emotions. Good day? Celebrate with junk! Bad day? Drown it with junk! So I'm trying to train my brain to associate stress with being allowed to go home and take a hot bath rather than grab a cupcake and a beer. Or a celebration with taking an extra hour to veg out to Netflix instead of thinking I should take myself out for a nice meal and a martini. It's been making quite a difference, but is the hardest habit of them all, ugh...

29 grams of fat per sausage. Even when the fat is drained off, 19 grams of fat remain. Pork saussage is not worth it! Maybe once or twice a year, like Eggnog.

Gym 5-6 days a week and Paleo diet. Since I am an endomorph body type AND half Mexican to boot I do 90/10 ratio rather than 85/15. When you're short you really can't afford to fuck around. High protein diets have been my saving grace.

I go to the gym 3-5times a week and workout 2 body parts each day ex: (biceps/chest, back/triceps, or legs and shoulders) The days that I don't go to the gym I do at home exercises that mainly targets my butt and legs. I also go to youtube for stretching tutorials.

I've just cleaned up my diet and go all out on the pole at work. I usually come in early and exercise on the pole before customers come in as well. The club is my gym. :p

Yes, 6 small meals a day keep me from eating too much and I feel satisfied all day.

When I lost 60 lbs in 3 months, I was exercising roughly 3 times a day (3-4 mile walks/ runs, 1-3 hours weights and cardio at the gym and biking around my neighborhood) and I completely changed my diet. I lost a LOT of weight FAST. It was awesome and I am so proud of myself for doing that!

Now, I still eat 6 small meals a day (about 2 hours between meals, it feels like you're eating a lot, but I'm always hungry RIGHT when it's time for me to eat again, so it's perfect!), I work out at the gym, at work and I walk 3 times a week for about a mile and a half. I also do yoga at home.

I don't eat because I'm picky, lazy, and cheap. But I plan on changing that next year (yeah right LOL).

I gym 3-6 days a week, doing machines, cardio, and weights for half an hour to an hour and a half each trip. I eat what I want and make sure I get enough protein and fats, not too many empty carbs. I'm not big on sugar so that helps.

I don't like gyms so I just download home workout programs and do those at home (I need to start doing them again, thank you for the reminder )
As for food - I have a problem with junk food also, and I can't keep away from it, that's why I'm not as fit as I can be.

I would recommend that you eat more than 1 600kcal per day, it's too low.
