Default Uber rides until I get a new car/ mine fixed?

I'm looking to start dancing at a club about an hour away from me in Myrtle Beach, but my car is stuck at my parents house until my dad gets around to fixing it or I break down and pay someone to fix it. I'm thinking about getting uber rides so I can start stripping ASAP. Do you guys have any thoughts on this? I've never had an uber ride before so I don't really know what to expect. Do you think it's safe to do this, or should I wait til my car is fixed?

IME Uber is perfectly safe, went w/ them a couple times in DC when I couldn't get a cab. If you're that concerned, treat them as you would a cab -- make sure they see you checking their ID/licence, make a 'I'm on my way' phone call (real or just for the driver's benefit) once the drive starts, etc.

I would think an hr long drive each way would add-up costwise pretty quickly tho.

Uber is legit. Once you start using Uber, you will never want to take a cab again.

While I liked the Uber service (super friendly drivers, clean vehicles) while I was on vacation in KY, it would not be a great financial move for a daily 1 hr commute. The fees vary depending on how many drivers they have, how busy they are, just because... A 20 mile drive cost us about $40 and then like $85. In all fairness, we were wasted at a concert and needed to get home, so it was money well spent. I wouldn't want to deal with that for a daily commute though.

You're better off saving your money and getting the car fixed ASAP.

I love Uber. Be careful of surge rates on certain nights. The day after Halloween they charged me 4X the normal rate, so an $8 ride cost me over $30. It's just as safe as a cab and cheaper and the drivers tend to be friendlier. And it's easier because you pay through your phone and you don't need to shift through your purse for cash or your card. I'm not sure if it would be worth it if your club is an hour away though ... can you lease a car?

you might want to have a look at

Unlike 'registered' cab companies, Uber drivers are private citizens / independent 'business' operators ... thus they undergo far less scrutiny than a 'registered' cab company driver who must undergo a background check for licensing. Uber drivers are also provided with the full name and address of paying customers ... versus 'registered' cab companies confining this customer information to the 'main office'.

I'm not attempting to 'slam' Uber, Lyft etc. - just pointing out that a difference exists.

Ive used them before. They do go through a background check. I looked at their website for drivers.

This. Keep the number for a local cab company in your phone so you have a back up if the surge price is out of control. Alternatively, have you actually looked in to how much it would cost to pay someone to fix your car compared to how much you'd spend on Uber/regular cabs until your dad gets around to fixing the car? It might just make more sense to fix it right away, especially if you have enough money to pay for it -- or maybe letting your dad know that you'll be bringing it in will encourage him to get to it quicker!

I wasn't saying Uber doesn't do background checks at all. But those background checks are superficial, i.e. criminal record. In general, 'professional' license checks by states / cities are more thorough. Additionally a licensed cabdriver working for a 'registered' cab company faces potential direct consequences from their employer for reported misconduct, whereas a Uber driver does not. And, perhaps most importantly, a licensed cabdriver does NOT have access to the customer's full name and other details, whereas the Uber driver does ( via the credit card info ).

Again I'm not trying to slam Uber ... just pointing out that any lonely / creepy guy who happens to own a car and not have a criminal conviction on his record can become a Uber driver.

Thanks for the info! It looks like it doesn't matter anyway. My husband is no longer comfortable with me stripping
