    Tired So sleepy

Lately all I want to do is sleep. I don't think I'm depressed. I've actually been very happy and confident lately. I'm wondering if it's the weather and shorter days? By 5pm I'm ready to go to bed. Tonight I fell asleep in my food eating dinner. I only made it into work twice last week. I kept calling off because I was too tired to drive much less dance until 2am. If I do go in, I've been falling asleep in the dressing room and drinking coffee just to stay awake long enough to get through the shift. I feel like such an old lady..and it's affecting my money. Anyone else going through this? Do humans hibernate?

Sounds like the iron-deficiency anemia I endured years ago - we womenz are especially susceptible. I was becoming deficient around fall/winter, and I also thought "maybe it's the weather?" as I was nodding off in classes (I never nod off in classes). Yikes. Supplementation will clear that up fairly quickly if that's the case - always take iron with food, and only take one per day until you start feeling more normal. Vitamin B12, zinc, and vitamin D could all be culprits as well. It might be easiest to get a blood panel done to check for any indicators of deficiencies.

Unnecessary side note: I remember being morbidly fascinated with the sudden onset of extreme sleepiness from my deficiency. I've always struggled with insomnia - especially in college, when I was a full-time student and also dancing 1-3x/week. I used to only sleep 5 out of every 7 nights. So my newfound ability to fall asleep anytime, anywhere was sickeningly enjoyable in some ways to me. In my memory, when I started supplementing with iron, I noticed a near-immediate difference in how I felt. Supposedly iron deficiencies can take a while to recover from, but I recovered very quickly.

I go through it all year but mines is associated with my mental illness. I have to fight my way out of bed some mornings telling myself I'll be able to go back to bed at whatever time not too far in the future. Sometimes I do go back to bed but most of the time once I'm up I'm good. I don't know how old you are but I'd talk to my doctor about it. I'm not sad or depressed either...just low on energy/ motivation.

Not saying you're mentally ill. It's just a mood fluctuation.

Could be sleep apnea too. Are you having any breathing or alergy issues?

3 years ago I could spend the day in bed and not be able to wake up, 5 hours with a CPAP macine and I can stay awake all day without coffee and long overnight drives are not an issue anymore.

You could also be having Thyroid issues.

Wednesday, it sounds like a vitamin deficiency. I actually had the same thing happen to me last month, I slept for about a week straight, and it helped to change my diet a bit.

Wednesday - have you noticed any differences in your cycle lately? When my deficiency started to worsen, my periods became shorter by a day or two. That's what tipped me off to the iron issue in the first place.

It could be a lot of things, really, from a vitamin deficiency to cancer. I would highly recommend seeing a doctor, as the fatigue you're experiencing seems pretty extreme.

Do you have gas heat? Could be carbon monoxide poisoning. Any issues with loud exhaust on your car?

I've been there. Taking a multivitamin with iron helps a bunch. Us anemics can attest to that lol. What are you eating? Are you on any medications that can cause drowsiness? Don't answer me, I'm not that nosy, just giving the easiest causes to fix first. Also, have your thyroid checked. If you weren't so thin, I'd lean towards potential hypothyroidism. Most people I've seen with it were heavier, but there are also exceptions.

I'm biased, but anytime anyone says they're chronically lethargic I jump on the thyroid bandwagon. If you can, ask your dr. to test your FT3 levels too.

I had this problem too years ago. I was uncontrollably falling asleep in inappropriate places. It was Glandular Fever. Took Drs a long time to realise that was the problem too.

I think it was a combination of anemia, PMS and fighting a cold. I had a "duh" moment when I got my period Thursday. I am always super sleepy the week before. I was anemic after I had my son but haven't been taking iron, so I started that up again..I can already stay awake longer in the evening and go to bed at 11pm rather than 5pm haha. Also noticed I was getting bruises on my legs (from pole dancing) and they weren't healing but they are since taking the iron. Thanks guys
