    Default Spots!!

I have hormonal issues and this causes me to have a shit loads of spots on, especially on my back and ass. Howwwww the hell can I get rid of them?!?!

I've had accutane in the past and it was amazing, but then a few years after coming off of it - I stopped taking the pill and that's when my nightmare restarted. Its the ones on my butt and back that get me down the most, I can deal with the ones on my face. Do any of you deal with hormonal adult acne?

Damn, I feel your pain. Acne can be such a fucking bummer every day. It just multiplies while you observe with your fingers crossed.

I'm on Accutane now for hormonal acne and I'm so relieved that it is working. I had clear skin from age 15-20 when I was on the pill then had to stop because of my migraine history. My skin just got worse and worse. It was always the absolute worst around ovulation. About a year ago I made some diet and lifestyle changes that helped, but ended up being hard to maintain (mostly due to travel) and expensive. I gave em a good six months though and saw results. Have you looked into that sort of thing? It takes time to work, but I think for a lot of people acne is an almost life-long thing. Here's what I found most helpful: zinc, topical antioxidants (esp vit B3), probiotics, low carb/low g.i. (and generally more nutritious) diet, vitex, and not getting stressed.

Why did you stop taking the pill? I wish I could go back on it. Accutane is kinda scary shit. How did your course go? Any bad side effects?

Accutane was a god send when I took it nearly 10 years ago, the only side effect I had was super dry skin but god I'd rather that that my usual greasy spotty skin! I tried to get put on it again but that was after I came off the pill and my dermatologist refused to do ANYTHING until I agreed to go back on the pill which I'm not going to do.

I stopped taking the pill as I'm not a fan of chemical contraceptives, ( I was on the pill for about 7-8 years - got it VERY early due to period problems) that was 4 ish years ago

Hmm I wasn't on any oral contraceptives and I went with the Skyla IUD because it has a really small amount of hormones compared to pills. I still don't feel great about it, but in the end it's good to know I won't get pregnant. You could do the copper IUD, which doesn't have hormones. It would only be for six months or so, as well. Maybe it's worth it for another ten years of beautiful skin?

Accutane is changing my life. I used to think about my skin all the time. So thankful.

I notice non-organic dairy (possibly dairy full-stop)will give me hormonal breakouts, around the sides of my face and chin.
I know its hormonal as it correlates with getting cramps/sharp pains, swollen breasts, fatigue...when I am strict about cutting out dairy these things aren't as much of an issue even before a period.

Oh well in that case definitely no Accutane! Neat. You should read about vitex—lots of ladies use it to help them get pregnant. Usually ladies who don't ovulate regularly/have hormonal issues.

Could be something else or something in addition to hormones? Could be your shampoo and conditioner or sweat for example.

A body scrub with salicylic acid may help.

Yeah that's one of my issues, I don't ovulate (suspected PCOS). Going through tests right now. what is vitex?

Miss.a.p1600 I constantly change my shampoo and conditioner so not sure if it could be that?

Yeah I used to get breakouts on my back and butt. Especially in summer when high temp causes me more sweating. I am now so cautious as to what touches my skin in those areas. I.notice if I thoroughly wash conditioner and not let wet hair drip on my back that this would help me. Plus I started using a body scrub that's made to clear breakouts.

It's also called agnus castus (scientific name) or chaste tree berry. It's a plant that has been used for centuries to treat female reproductive problems. It supposedly supports a part of your brain that regulates hormones. Pituitary gland maybe? You can get it in most pharmacies in the US. It's all over PCOS boards. Another supplement to think about for PCOS is inositol. I haven't tried this one but it is also talked about a lot on PCOS boards. It's an anti-androgen estrogen regulating enzyme or something like that.

Have you tried laying in a low level tanning bed once a week for like 8 minutes? That really helped my skin, to the point where I haven't broken out since I started doing that.

I am fair skinned so 8 min sessions are out of the question BUT I can do about 4-5 min sessions, used to and did find they helped dry out my dry...might start up again. Thanks!

I agree with Nightgoddess as i believe sunlight or even tanning light can help even skin tone.

I recommend Proactiv body wash for sensitive skin it has gentle exfoliating beads and benzoyl peroxide or Neutrogena body scrub has salicylic acid.

I dunno, I think with your ovulation problems it is probably more of an excess androgen thing. Especially since you said it started right after you got off the pill. In that case, topical stuff can definitely help tone down/dry out the zits, and vitamin D from tanning is really good for lovely skin, but it won't stop you from getting acne.

And if you do have PCOS, you have more serious things to worry about that definitely warrant lifestyle changes.

topical stuff doesn't seem to ever work for me. I had problems before coming off of the pill but the biggest change during/post pill was the state of my skin.

Yeah, I am in process of losing weight and getting fit, changing diet etc so with all of these amazing tips you guys have gave me, hopefully 2015 will be a good skin and health year for me!

    Thanks guys!!

I get non-hormonal acne on my back, chest and butt, so ymmv with this, but I notice that it gets worse when I am not drinking as much water. I try for at least 3L of plain water every day, and it seems to help. Again, not hormonal, so may not help, but good for general health

My 2 cents about Accutane- avoid it if possible b/c it is way too risky. One of my exes (male) was on it and apparently his chronic acne came back after a few years had passed. My current boyfriend was on Accutane more than 20 years ago & he gets backne now but manages it with body wash and topical meds.

IMO it's healthier to treat acne through diet changes, topical meds and hormonal meds. A recent study found that cystic acne in teenage males was fixed by eliminating refined carbs from their diets (like white bread and unhealthy sugar.)

Just sharing if it helps anyone. I am sure Accutane will be replaced by a far better drug someday soon but for now it's not the first thing you wanna consider.

I have the same exact problem. Adult acne all over my back and ass (and face). Here is what I do to avoid unnecessary hormone treatments and/or antibiotics:

    1. Learn what works best where. For me, a rough exfoliant (gritty sand stuff) can help clear up my ass very well. But my back and face are more sensitive and react better to a chemical exfoliant (MDForte) plus a pure witch hazel astringent. Moisturising used to also help those areas before, but I'm hesitant to even use lotion on my face now since I do pole work.

    2. Avoid dairy and chocolate, especially at night. Hate to say it but chocolate really causes breakouts, and so can milk. When I used to drink hot cocoa often before bed I had awful facial acne. Oh, and alcohol makes acne worse as well. And greasy foods. Basically avoid anything that tastes good. :/

    3. Shower after you sweat. Come home from the club or exercising and take a shower, and exfoliate that ass every time.

    4. Honestly, a regular sex life seems to help with the hormones. I know it's weird. But when I don't see my boyfriend for a few days to a week I start breaking out more.

    5. Use cover-up when necessary. Get a cheap spot concealer (slightly lighter than your natural skin tone) and use liquid or powder foundation over it. Sure it will rub off in an hour or so, but it's good for auditions, and later on people will be too drunk to notice.

    Hope that helps!

Neutrogena pink grapefruit body wash helps. It takes a week or two but it definitely made a difference with my chest and back breakouts.
