Default something i learned from a few dates with a hacker

    How i met him:
One of my friends was dating a guy she found on OKC. She said he seemed cute online so far, but just in case he was a creep, she wanted me and another friend to go with her to meet him first. If she liked him in person, then she would give us a secret signal, and we would leave them alone together. If not, then we would swoop in and "save" her with some fake emergency.
He was fine, and she liked him. And he happened to bring along a friend (a computer guy, let's call him John).

Then they suggested we all go dancing at some club(s), one of them drove, so we all said OK. I wasn't really dressed to go dancing but whatever, i went, and it was fun. I wasn't really attracted to the friend named John, but we talked a lot and he seemed nice and wanted to hang out again, i was kind of broke and bored at the time so i went along with it.

I ended up crashing at John's apt and sleeping in his bed (twice, once after the second or third date too). We never hooked up. He never made any moves, always respectful. He said he didn't want to get into a sexual relationship too soon and i thought that was pretty cool, because i wasn't really interested.

I only went out with him three times. I left town for vacation, and we never got together again when i got back. We're FB friends and he comments and says dumb stuff when i post pictures sometimes.

ANYWAYS here I'm finally going to get to the point. I'm writing this long-ass intro about how i know him because I want to describe how NOT-CLOSE we are in our relationship.

Once, when we were hanging out in his living room after breakfast, he told me a "funny story"about how he and one of his computer-hacker friends were curious about a girl that they liked, so they hacked into her computer remotely…
"And that's how i found out that girls watch porn, too!" he said.

-from their screen, they could watch every action that she made from her own computer (typing, clicking, etc)
-OR, they could also set it so that they could control her computer from their own computer… they could go through her files and documents, type things that she could see from her side (which he said they didn't do)

She never found out, and they still laugh about it.

OK, how creepy is that? Not the smartest thing to tell a girl on the first few dates. I get so paranoid now that he might be casually going through my files, or hacking my webcam, just for fun (i keep tape over it when I'm not using it now). I don't think he's the type to try to steal money from me, but you know what, maybe he could!

Just sharing this story because maybe it might be useful to other girls. Better safe than sorry. Be careful about what you do with your technology! If you think what happens between you and your laptop is totally private, lemme tell you, it might not be.

There are simple ways to do the things you have described, but they all involve planting a Trojan on the subjects computer. Pretty much any decent antivirus package can prevent this, plus don't open email attachments that you aren't expecting to receive.

AVG is one of my favorite antivirus packages, and I also use Ubuntu Linux as my operating system.

Remote access is shockingly one of the most simple of tricks out there really. simple enough that I often hove one of my besties routinely get into my system from his end to help me fix things when Im having problems ( though you can also download software that sets up said remote access via a third party) It's not uncommon for use with tech support and so on.

one of my wifes friends however got jail time for his hacking back in he earlier days of the webbernet when he got into banking records and was removing due balances on random accounts and a ton of other things ( sorta a hackavist before that term existed) when he got out ironically enough he started getting flooded with job offers from major companies to be part of their cyber security teams.

What is scary isnt that... whats scary is that hackers can shut down entire cities at will, Im meaning overloading powergrids and taking down that entire system leaving a city in the dark ages

have a pace maker or insulin implant? they can remote hack that too. several demonstrated not long ago they were able to hack into a pacemaker and cause it to misfire repeatedly from only a few hundred feet away, same with hacking the insulin injector- causing it to dump its entire payload into the body in one massive lethal dose - the worst part being these devices have no built in protection- so removing evidence they were ever there is erased clean.

all it takes for that is some scripting, and some add on technology you can get for around 50 bucks.

lets not forget cyber warefare . which has been around for a while. one famous example comes from the early 80's when russia was reportedly stealing tech digitally so the US made a dummy set of files loaded with what some think may have been the first Worm . This virus was made to hide and work its way into the russian systems and shut down gas and oil lines and disrupt the flow of power by closing new electronically controlled valves. however it worked too well, and the oil lines built up too much pressure and caused series of massive explosions. The US has also been hit more than a few times too

there is a much bigger list of what can be done out there... when it comes down to it remote accessing your PC, cameras on said PC, or phone and so in is actually childs play in the scheme of things.

The biggest problem I see today, is people who play games and puzzles they download for free from the internet. Many of these have things piggybacked that change your search engine, toolbar, etc.

AVG is one of the better antiviruses, but it won't stop things that you are duped into installing.

Always read the fine print when installing anything, and be sure to uncheck the options to install those free search tools and toolbar add ons.

That is SO creepy. It's bad enough he did it, but why the hell would he tell you?
A guy I went out with like twice researched my phone #, found out my ex paid for it and got a background check on him cause he wanted to see if he was a "threat."
How are some guys this damn creepy and freely talk about it?!!

Hacking is so easy these days, there are even web sites that will sell you a complete hacking package. Everything you need to hack into somebody else's computer. While there are still the lone hackers sitting in their basement, there are also the hackers that work on an industrial scale. Entire teams that do nothing but try to hack into everything. Of course it doesn't help that most people do nothing to protect themselves. Never update there anti-spyware, or anti-virus program, download all sorts of questionable material from the internet, etc.

@SwanPrincess: Sometimes these guys don't know they are being creepy, it never even crosses their minds. They think they are being nice or whatever. Some grow out of it, some learn, others don't. I know there were things I did from 15/16/ to 21/22 yo that now I look at and think that was a dumb and creepy thing to do. Just being young and stupid and not knowing any better at the time.

There was a lawsuit against a school that "gave" Trojan infected laptops to kids so they could spy on the kid's online habits plus their home lives. (!!!!) The info is on Google if you wanna look for it...

I personally had a crazy landlord spying on me via checking my online activity on the complex's free WiFi, and then I caught him hanging around my door (I had my apt. door next to a laundry room- I found him in there waving a device towards my door & I asked him angrily if I could help him with something....He just stared at me.) Naturally I moved out of that shithole.

Moral- get a tech buddy to reduce your online vunerablity, and if you are an escort, keep your booking activity low tech- use a Tracphone/flip phone, take notes in shorthand and encrypt your laptop records for work.

I use Avast but I agree that the woman's computer was infected with a trojan that she installed by opening an email attachment. Pirated software is another issue even those associated with torrents. Even a browser attack can be a problem.

I think they could go to jail for that. Bet they wouldn't be laughing then.

So creepy, and I can see just from that why you weren't that interested in this guy. A few years ago I had a client have someone in his company hack my email. At least I think that's all they hacked. He recited to me emails I had sent to other guys. Don't understand what people have to gain from just spying on somebody. I would actually respect it more if they were white-collar criminals or something but they just sit around and do it for fun! Weird

Kiki, I would think it far more likely that he snuck a peek at your, smartphone/tablet/laptop, thanbwas actually able to penetrate your providers security.

Far more data is stolen by physical break-ins andvsnooping, than is actually hacked.

Most identity theft is via piggyback scanners in gas pumps, and info you unknowingly give out than is actually stollen by hacking.

Most people who brag about their hacking ability are lying outright. If they claim to have hacked email, they probably got it from your device. If they have phone account info most likely they overheard a conversation, or saw the bill in your purse, then claimed hacking ability to scare or impress you.

I've noticed that's overwhelmingly the case, Fuzzy. Newbies will brag about learning a few simple tricks, but the ones who really know what they're doing are either very blase or secretive about it. More times than I can count, someone has claimed to have "hacked me," when they really just happened to catch a glimpse of something I left open or they got hold of something the original receiver was less than discreet with.

On the flip side, I have a handful of tech-y friends that I had no idea were as good as they are until it somehow became relevant in conversation after ages of knowing each other. One in particular has been talking with me a lot to weigh the pros and cons of camming; I had no idea he was gonna bust out the tech info when I mentioned my concerns. Definitely, definitely find and cherish that one you can trust among your friends that knows how to help you with tech issues if you're as un-savvy as I am!

    Just a note,

Porn icon Asia Carrera used to hang out on Modern Mayhem Forums, she lived in the same apt building as the guy who founded (M) and they spent quite a bit of time discussing the latest security techniques.

Asia, ran her own personal website all by herself.

This jogged my memory- isn't the plot of the movie "Sliver" about a guy who owns a highrise and spys on his neighbors via video surveillance? I don't feel like re-watching the movie but I think this is it.

My point is even before Internet and WiFi people were abusing tech to be Peeping Toms or worse.

Also about 15 years ago my boyfriend & I used a police scanner (it was his dad's, dad was a PD detective) to eavsdrop on cordless phone calls in the apartment complex. We heard one neighbor having phone sex with her side piece right before her husband got home from work, and we heard another neighbor setting up a weekend getaway with her "friend." We got bored with it so we stopped. Honestly we really wanted to hear the chatter on the police and fire dept. channels, not gross-ass Bad Housewife drama...
