Dizzy Did I tip my hair dresser enough?

I never get my hair done at a salon. Ever. I've been doing my own hair since I was old enough to shoo my mom away from cutting/ dying it for me.

Today, I spent the morning having my hair permanently straightened. The process took 5 hours at $100/hour = $500, which is typical for the type of straightening I had done. The sylist also did a great job (or it seems that way so far, it's not done setting yet).

I thought it was customary to tip hairdressers 10% so I gave an extra $50 to the stylist. She seemed very appreciative, but now that I'm home, I'm reading that 20% is customary. Considering it was more than half her work day spent, I'm worried I didn't tip enough. What do you normally tip your stylists? Do you tip more or less for longer procedures?

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, I wasn't sure where else to post...

Wow $100/hour... things like this help me remember why I'm in beauty school. lol!

An extra fifty dollars seems good enough but since it's not a full 20%, I would see how your hair looks when it sets and if it really looks amazing go back and give her more if you want to.

My stylist has a thing on her receits like restaurants do or tipping. It tells me how much 10% 15% and 20% are and let's me choose. I usually go with 15%.

I've nvr heard of a 'standard amt' for hairstylists so I always figured around 15-20% depending on what I had done & how it came out. Usually tip initially at the lower end & once the colour settles or whatever 'finality' hits I re-evaluate & go back to tip on top of it if I am really pleased, like Kiki suggested.

Ok... I'll stop worrying about it for now and send her a little extra after I shower and I get to see the final product.

Ugh, I hate figuring out tips for hairdressers. I never know if you're still supposed to tip if they are just paying 'rent' for the chair and keeping everything they make? If you're paying the salon and they're only keeping a percentage then you would definitely tip, but if not, it just gets confusing to me.

I normally tip my stylist at home 25%- 30% even though she owns her own salon now because she gives such a huge discount on it (almost 50% because she's been doing my hair since I was like 16 and knew I was broke then) and tip other stylists more like 15% I guess. It depends how good a job they did and what the fee was-- I think $50 is a good tip but admittedly have never had someone do my hair for 5 hrs, so maybe more would be better? I would see how good it turns out.

My hair costs about $180 for cut and color and I typically tip her $35
