Default Can I ask my landlord to improve the apartment?

I love my apartment, but there is no central heat/ air, the shower has an installed door that gets grimy and disgusting and I want a better fridge. Can I ask for an improvement when I resign my lease? I love the location and it's the perfect size for me, but they don't allow pets which is a huge compromise on top of the other things I mentioned.

I was thinking about taking out the shower door myself, but they told me I couldn't "remodel" (does unscrewing some screws count as remodeling? I see it as "improvement"), and I hate having to scrub it down after every god damn shower I take. Also, getting central heat/ air wouldn't cost much for my unit since it's only like 1000 sq feet.

If you don't ask, you don't get, so I don't see why you shouldn't -- just be prepared for your landlord to either refuse or to agree but to increase your rent. Go in with a basic idea of how much each of these upgrades would cost and the value of similar apartments in your area that have those improvements so you don't get screwed if your landlord jacks up the rent way too high because you couldn't negotiate properly.

Definitely ask. When I got my apartment it already had just been remodeled but a girl who lives a couple apartments down asked our landlord to remodel hers and he did. I forget exactly what she asked him to do though. It's not a crazy thing to ask for and if you have a decent relationship with your landlord theres a likely chance he/she will get it done. Just go with specific things in mind you would want fixed up and maybe some estimates and see what your landlord says.

I did this - there was no central air and I was roasting. Rent increase of $100 a month if I remember correctly but if he hadn't done it I would have had to move as I was getting sick from the heat.

I would ask. One of my family members just did huge remodeling for a rented place, they had to pay for it out of pocket and deal with all the scheduling and whatnot themselves, but it vastly increased the property value so the got a huge discount on rent for the rest of the lease.

In regards to pets I would offer a pet deposit. Start at 50% below what you're willing to pay and negotiate. That is the hardest thing to argue with landlords I have learned, unfortunately, some landlords are just dead set against it.

Definitely ask. When I was in college, my roommates and I hated our apartment and decided to not renew our lease for the following year. Right before we vacated the premises, the landlord completely refurbished our apartment including brand new furniture and appliances. At the end, the refurbished apartment we were vacating was much nicer than the new apartment we moving to. Had we asked, we probably would have been informed that our apartment was being refurbished and we would have renewed the lease for another year.
