Default "When Men Have to Answer Inane Questions on the Red Carpet"

    Interesting article: http://www.elle.com/culture/celebrit...et/?click=hprc

I knew Hollywood was sexist, but I didn't realize to what degree. I never watch those red carpet or award shows, so I guess I had no idea they asked different questions according to their gender. What do you guys think about this?

I think us dancers should start responding to questions we get asked at work in the same way those men did.

Hollywood is VERY sexist. Actresses are often paid less, even if they are a star. There have been many stories of television shows where the lead female and male stars were equal yet the male was paid much more (X Files was an example). Older women unless they are of a very select caliber (Streep, Mirren etc)don't get the roles the males get. Women are judged more on their looks than men are. Older actors work more than most older actresses. Actresses get bashed if they aren't superskinny but men can be slobs and get away with it.

I know several working in Hollywood and the things they have told me is so horrendous. Things like the casting couch (which we've all heard about)still happens. People who have more conservative leanings are often blacklisted. Many marriages are actually shams for publicity.

don't even get me started on the censoring system and how sexist they are..i heard that a male orgasm receives a pg 13, but a female one automatically gets an R or NC-17

^ The cunnilingus scene in Blue Valentine is why it received an NC-17 rating. How many R-rated movies show PIV sex or fellatio? How many R-rated action movies with all male casts show boobs or fully naked women (who, incidentally, don't get speaking roles)? Ugh.

On a lighter note: my phone autocorrected cunnilingus to cumulonimbus. I really wanted to leave it like that!

Yeah and it's sick. Awhile back they had some event with all these famous television actresses like Marion Ross (Happy Days)and Meredith Baxter (Family Ties)and they were talking about being on these shows and making less than their male counterpart (though in Baxter's case, she mentioned it was an earlier show and not Family Ties). I understand if the male is the star of the movie or television show but what if he is a co star? Sexism at its finest. In Marion Ross case she was paid less than Tom Bosley, Ron Howard and Henry Winkler on Happy Days and when she found out threatened to quit. The producers said 'go ahead, we'll just find another actress to replace you".

^^You are right, Kellydancer. Not to threadjack my own thread, but I found this: http://www.forbes.com/sites/moirafor...eigns-supreme/

This proves that the gender pay gap is real. If it happens in Hollywood, it probably happens in other industries, maybe even all of them. I always thought the gender pay gap was a myth. Now I am starting to see I was wrong....

Sadly the gender gap is alive and well in many industries. When I worked for a government run railroad I was paid less than less qualified male coworkers and when I complained I was fired. One asshole even told me I was taking a job from a man. Yeah sexism is still out there. With regards to movies, I am so tired of actresses either paying the wife/mother of the main character, stereotypical roles etc. I want more action stars. I want more movie roles that little girls will see and say "I want to grow up to be like her".

Yep, don't know if you've been following all the Sony hacking info that's been flooding the press lately, but it was shown that Jenniffer Lawrence, despite having an Academy Award and being probably the most popular female actor right now, was paid less than all of her male co-stars.

I'll see if I can find it, but there was a video I watched a while ago where they had clips of the ridiculous questions women get asked on the red carpet, and it was pretty fucking bad.... I forget who it was, but they were asking a female actress something like, is really hard for you to memorize all those scientific terms you have to say on TV? And her response was, uhm, no it's that difficult because I have a Phd in (I feel like it was astronomy or something) so not only can I repeat the words, but I understand the concepts...

The production company won the appeal to rate it R.

Awhile back I saw a listing of the actors who are paid 20 million a picture and many of them are actors who haven't even had a popular movie in years. Yet many actresses like Jennifer Lawrence are paid less than these guys. Not only that but if a actresses has a string of flops she is probably through (or has to drop her rates)but not always the same with men.

Agreed, it's silly how little actresses are paid given their popularity.

To some dergree JLaw probably signed on for HG not know how popular it would be, and most contracts lock an actor/actress in at a salary for sequels.

I've said it before, I'm a hopeles romantic, and my wife knows I'm always up for a good romcom. I often pick movies based on the lead actress rather than male co-stars.

The movie the stats were about was the one with Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale, American Hustle.
I don't know if she made more or less in the Hunger Games ones.

Correction: the global movie going public is sexist, not Hollywood. Hollywod simply responds to the capitalistic force of the movie-going public. We the consumers, by voting with our ticket purchases, dictate to Holywood what and who we want to see on screen. That drives salaries. It you don't like it, go see more independent movies with well-paid female leads. Blame my high school economics teacher who taught me that under capitalism my dollar IS my vote. Every dollar you spend wields power! Embrace that power and use it responsibly.

Or not. My dollar says I want to see sexy women on screen, or nerdy stuff, or stupid comedies. The last movies I saw in the theater were Hobbit 3 and Dumb & Dumber To. Before that the god-awful transformers movie with the cute blonde. Jesus what a piece ot crap...but she was cute. And that's how it works. $12 from me 'cuz she was cute.

While the idea of economics being the driving force for what Hollywood produces sounds like a logical conclusion, I think it's not true. Hollywood IS sexist, just like Kellydancer illustrated w/ her examples. And most Hollywood directors are MALE, which means they are going to make the movies they want to see, and from a male's POV, generally speaking. I've heard that women have to go through so many bullshit hoops to even try to become a director. And by the time she does become a director, it's hard to get the respect from any of the big wigs in Hollywood b/c of how sexist they are. The entire thing is just tragic.
