Question Ladies with BAs: how many surgeons did you consult with first?

Just out of curiosity, how long did it take for you to find the right surgeon? Or to be confident that you had picked the right one? Also, does anyone have any tips for making the most of a consultation? (The first of three I have scheduled is tomorrow.)

Well, I haven't had a BA but am considering one. There's a magazine called New Beauty, that has listings of plastic surgeons, & a checklist/hints of things to ask & look for.
They're online too, Idk if they have all the directories online though.

^Thanks, I'll definitely see what info I can mine from them. Oddly enough, they don't seem to have any surgeons in my area in their directory. I'm in New Orleans, and they recommended one surgeon in Lafayette, then a bunch in Houston.

I voted three, but I was 99% sure about who would do them. I just did two other pre-consults over email (I sent pics and got pretty detailed responses) to make sure that the one I was basically set on wasn't suggesting anything crazy.

I only saw one but I did a LOT of research. I spent so much time on RealSelf.com searching through surgeons and reviews and reading about other girls' experiences. I was pretty confident in my guy before I saw him but once I had the consultation I was 100% confident. I think the number of surgeons you consult with may not matter as long as you do a ton of research. They can tell you whatever they want in person so reading about actual patients and how they liked the surgeon is more important in my opinion.

As for getting the most out of your consultation, bring a lot of pictures and write down all of your questions. Make sure they understand what you do want and what you do not want. In one of my later appointments before my surgery I brought a poster of pictures of boobs I did want and boobs I did not want and gave it to my surgeon. Talk to them about what you want and what they think is do-able with your body. Like for me, a lot of the "want" pictures were more teardrop shaped and mod profile, but my surgeon told me that probably wasn't possible with my body since my skin is so tight. I also told him I want to go as big as possible and he said he would go as big as he could with it being SAFE. That's another thing to look out for. If a surgeon tells you he will go as big as you want "no matter what" I would go somewhere else. Also, if he/she isn't honest about what the look is that you can achieve I would be wary. I liked my surgeon because he was honest with me about what I could do and could not do and didn't just tell me what I wanted to hear so he could get my money.

I only consulted one. I first wanted the best surgeon in my province but the wait time was very long (it was around 8 months if I remember correctly) because he's also one of the rare surgeons who does sex reassignment. I went with the second best rated, the wait time was around 4 months, did a lot of research of forums beforehand and I am happy with the results.

I'm the same, I researched tons of surgeons online and emailed back and forth with several, but only ended up having a consult with one. I was pretty set on him from the beginning because of his great reviews online and I've met a few girls who's boobs he did and they looked great, but wanted to check out other options. I also agree with reading reviews online first because yeah, they are all charming and sure they're awesome, you're only gonna find out if it's true from speaking to their patients.

For the consult, do your research. Don't come in there saying "so I want my boobs to be bigger..." have an idea of exactly what you're looking for. Research the different types of implants (mod plus, HP, etc) and know how CCs work, look at some pics to see the differences in CC. Bring LOTS of pictures since that's how your surgeon will get an idea of what you're looking for. And don't be afraid to challenge him/her or ask them to explain something or repeat what they just said, make suggestions for what you want-- you'll have a much better consult that way. And be weary of anyone who gives into what you want super easily. They should be doing their best to give you what you want, but they also should also be realistic about whether it's possible with your body type, if something else will look better, etc.

^God, the one I consulted with yesterday seemed a bit taken aback that I already had done research and knew what I wanted. He recommended a website that had very basic information (and that I had already been to, of course), didn't want to look at pictures I'd brought, and didn't want to talk about cc's because it was "too early in the process." WTF? I found myself dumbing myself down and avoiding technical language because he seemed really uncomfortable around me. Isn't it his job to make me comfortable around him?

If you get a bad vibe go somewhere else. Maybe he's not a good surgeon and banks on clueless girls who go in with no idea what they want or who know nothing about breast augmentations. But my surgeon also said we shouldn't focus on cc's because everyone's bodies are so different. He wouldn't even tell me the exact number that I would have until after because he said it's determined during the actual surgery. He had an estimate of 550 for me, but I ended up with 545 in one and 595 in the other (biggest he could go that was safe), which ended up the perfect size.

You should be able to talk about estimates at a consultation.. also try on sizers! I went in with a set number of 450 for some reason (going off what other girls got) and when I tried that sizer on they just looked like i had on a push-up bra, so I decided I wanted 550-600ccs.

It's awesome they had something for you to try on! I'm not quite sure what you mean by sizers-- are like very padded, weighted bras? Or like a computer simulation? I wasn't given anything to try on virtually or in real life, and there were no sample implants to feel/weigh/hold up to myself.

I'm seeing another doctor on Saturday. I hope that one gives me a little more confidence.

azalea, how did you bring up CC's? Did you have a goal, or did you ask him for an estimate?

Also, 22's surgeon (and I think audrey's is too) specializes in oversize implants, so he was comfortable allowing her to try on bigger and bigger implants. You probably know this since you did a lot of research, but a ton of doctors limit implant diameter so it's within 1 cm of your BWD, meaning they'll only consider three or maybe four implant sizes (the mod, mod+, HP, and maybe UHP that match your BWD). They determine the width, you determine the projection. That's why a lot of surgeons don't let you try stuff on.

That's not necessarily to say your consult didn't have a million red flags, though.

I'm not sure the one from yesterday even measured my BWD. An assistant used a tape measure to measure the distances from my nipples to my collarbone, to the creases under my breasts, and to each other. Don't they usually measure that with calipers?

I mentioned CCs when he asked what size I was trying to achieve. I told him I wanted them to be as large as could look natural-ish on my frame, and that I guessed that would probably mean 500-550 CCs. I'm pretty sure I want mod+, but am open to HP, but I don't think I even mentioned projection. He seemed to get irritated when I talked, so I just let him keep drawing boobs on the whiteboard and explaining things like what the difference between saline and silicone is so on and so forth. I'd already decided that he wasn't the right doctor for me, so I just kind of tuned him out and let him talk until he was done.

Also, is it normal to charge $75 for a consultation? Seemed kind of tacky to me.

I honestly wish I had been much more up front about CCs with my surgeon because I would have said no way! And wouldn't be going for a second op. But it depend what you're hoping for. And how much control you want to have. I would definitely try on sizers because then you'll know how the CCs are on your body. You can also do the "rice test" at home.

My surgeon was definitely surprised that I knew a lot, but certainly not uncomfortable with it. He just started talking about a lot of technical things I didn't know and had to explain himself! I would try another consult.

In regards to charging for a consult, I think it just really depends. My doctor didn't charge for my consult, but a doctor working in the same city charging the same amount was going to.

They actually have both at his office. The sizers are like these ugly grandma bras that have the actual implants with that specific number of cc's in the cup. They were heavy kind of which is why I forget I have my boobs because they're not heavy at all lol. But I see a lot of girls making their own at home with rice. My surgeon also has this digital thing where they take a picture of you and then on a TV screen they enlarge your boobs to whichever cc's you are thinking of, it was really cool!

Also, the guy I went with charged $100 for the consultation but it was taken off from the final fee.

Quick update: I picked a doctor, but not a surgery date. Also, I'm on the fence about a few things, like whether to get fat transferred from my lower belly to the area around the implants so I have more cleavage and the implants are better camouflaged. Thanks for making me feel better about not interviewing every doctor in the metropolitan area!

I only went to one consultation before getting my BA. I had planned on seeing another doctor for a consultation but upon reading numerous negative views I couldn't feel confident with that doctor. I have 415cc silicone under the muscle. I had my BA on January 28th.
