I've only smoked maybe 7 times.. really tried to like it lol.. just not for me i guess. I did ask the non-drinker pot smoking girls at the club what it was like. They said it was great and it was easier to talk to people.

Sounds like you're looking to replace one addiction w/ another, whether intentionally or not.

If the anxiety is *that bad* esp after doing it for a couple yrs, maybe it's just that you're not cut out for this job. There is no shame in that if that's the case. But don't kid yourself abt pot being a suitable 'healthy' replacement for alcohol. Any1 who tells you there's no harm that could come from pot is full of shit. Taking the necessary steps to address the anxiety rather than suppressing it w/ your substance(s) of choice will be the healthiest choice in the long run.

Besides, weren't you the one who got your thong in a twist awhile back bc you got caught w/ contraband alcohol at work? Don't be stupid enough to court jail time by pulling that shit w/ an illegal substance.

I have smoked weed before and I don't see how other dancers who smoke weed before work can still manage to work. The high does feel good for me, but the last thing I want to do is talk to people or have to think much for that matter lol. Never smoked it while working (but have smoked while visiting as a customer) but I can't imagine getting high before/in between the shift, then having to make the effort to get up and talk to people when all I'd want to do is veg out and watch cartoons.

I'm not a regular smoker and I know some people are more used to it and can function at the club, but I personally couldn't.

I've said it before here and I'll say it again: if you're looking to trying to quit any substance completely I would suggest working in a juice bar or non-alcohol bar for a while to get used to it. I was in the same situation and drank a lot and I knew it was a huge problem. So I worked in non-alcohol bars for a while and it's helped a lot.

^ yes I agree with Starling 100%. It's prob a good idea to try a juice bar in your area if there is one, you may travel to one a few days out of the week? As far as the stage anxiety goes, try & skip stage if possible. Take a guy into the vip room if you know you're going up soon that way they'll skip you & you're less likely to get in trouble for skipping. That's my dirty secret every night if I can get away with it in time. OR I hide out in the bathroom & come out like 2 girls later & hope they will just think I'm in the vip room. I hate stage too but only bc it's an unnecessary thing we all must endure at one time or another for the sake of a few bucks at most :/

OP, have you ever tried anything natural and over the counter for anxiety? Valerian, St. Johns Wort, and L Theanine have worked for me.

While I do agree with the other posts, she seems like a somewhat heavy drinker at work (i was too) so going from drinking to nothing might not be an option for her right now. She wouldn't be asking about other drugs if it was. Honestly, going to a juice bar might not help anyways, as you can easily sneak drinks in your purse depending on how strict they are. I don't necessarily think you should replace one drug with another, but I myself don't think weed is the worst alternative.

Please, please have a designated driver, always. Drinking or smoking, doesn't matter. I can't stress this enough. Don't put other lives (or your own) in danger.

    ^This!

Also, I agree with Aniela-it's unhealthy to swap one addiction for another. It's not going to solve the problem, just mask it and prevent you from confronting it and healing. I'm not being judgmental, if someone wants to drink at work it's their business-but self medicating with alcohol isn't pretty or helpful-trust me .
Have you tried going on anti-anxiety medication or receiving counselling (if it effects other areas of your life it might be worth it)? Then you will have skills to cope with it and control it, so drinking can be a choice again and not a need.

If your drinking always escalates then its likely that if you smoked weed that sooner or later that would escalate too.

I know many recovering addicts working successfully in the industry, they are some of the brightest, most compassionate, self loving people I know. The things you learn they can help you live and work without substances so really, what's there to lose?

Only problem with weed is its not legal in many places unlike its counterpart alcohol.

I used to drink alcohol to help relieve nervous feelings during shifts. Problem was that it's harder to be alert on the job and the hangovers were rough my stomach can't handle medium or large quantities of liquor.

So I figure if I need a slight buzz to get me in the mood before work I smoke a bit of weed instead. This helped for a while but then I realized eventually Its better to work totally free from substances.

No point wrecking mind and body for a buzz to make money easier when the same amount of money can be made without drinking or smoking.

Now I just act like I'm buzzed and if I get offered a drink I take like a sip or two then pour the rest out when they're not looking.

I experience anxiety majority of my shifts but I keep myself occupied with dancing or comfort snack food. I also like mid shift where there's still money but not as crazy as the hustle and bustle of the late night shift.

    Hey hun,

This is my first post but I just wanted to let you know that St Johns Wort tea is a great option for people who experience anxiety/depression and don't want to take any stronger pharmaceuticals. It's something you can drink every day and is fairly mild but it's not something that you will see the results of instantly. More of a longer term thing. My partner and a few friends have a lot of positive things to say about the tea.

Also, have you ever tried a stand of pot that is lower in THC? That may be a good option.

I like to smoke sometimes before bed & my bf gave me his vaporizer thing for smoking and I like it because I don't get as high off it. It's more just relaxing. I've considered using that at work sometimes but when I am even slightly high I get lazy & just want to eat.. so I would probably order a pizza and call it a night lol. But yeah if you're a heavy drinker it might be hard to stop drinking cold turkey so if you are to smoke I would recommend one of those. They're less intense and should help with your anxiety. I'm not a big smoker though this is from someone who just smokes occasionally.

My ex boyfriend was an alcoholic, went through AA and then started smoking weed. He said quitting weed was actually harder and more painful than quitting alcohol. The withdrawal was horrendous - mood swings, anxiety, vomiting, sweating, shaking... for like two weeks! Anyone who says weed is milder than alcohol is kidding themselves. Both can definitely become an addiction, especially if you have an addictive personality.

Would you possibly consider getting a prescription from a doctor? I know that prescriptions like xanax can also become addictive, but it might be easier if you had a prescription to regulate your intake (like 1 pill per day) rather than self medicating like this. When you say that you can't keep your intake under control, it sounds like you might need some help from an outside source - whether that's a doctor, a therapist or a trustworthy friend.

I have! It's basically a sleep aid for "normal" people, but acts as an anti anxiety med in those who legit have it. Oh, and if you try Valerian, don't say I didn't warn you about the smell/taste http://health.cvs.com/GetContent.asp...hunkiid=653856 here's the most effective anxiolitic I've found to date that's legal.

I agree about pot. I saw it with my ex and my sister that's why I'm not for legalizing it. I hope i don't get flamed for my opinion. Last time I smoked 25 years ago I thought I was going to die. I literally was driving and forgetting where I was going every few seconds. Like it fucked with my short term memory.

If someone has an addictive personality and shouldn't smoke weed shouldn't they not be taking pills either? That seems like an even bigger problem to me.

Yeah Whirlerz no substances at all is def the best option. I don't mean to push weed on anyone I just thought if she's going to smoke anyway that e-cig thing works nicely & is less harsh than like an actual blunt or something.

You can quit drinking, you can do anything you want to do! Smoking weed is only going to give you more anxiety, it's better to just sit with that feeling and experience it fully until it goes away. Numbing out your emotions with addictions isn't going to help you. This is a job that can certainly be done sober, you can probably do it even better sober. Try changing your diet to a whole foods diet, sometimes people don't realize that they feel crappy because of the food they are eating and the chemicals we are exposed to. Meditation is also a great tool, positive thinking and affirmations, and journaling. If you are truly ready to let go of your addictions you can certainly do it, you just need to truly want to be free.

I drank and danced for a long time, getting two DUI's in the process. The prospect of quitting terrified me because alcohol was my crutch and I thought I was more fun/sexy/interesting while drinking. The first week of dancing sober took a bit of adjustment but here's what else adjusted: my income. All of a sudden I was making 30-50% more every single night and gaining back the respect from coworkers I'd lost by being a sloppy, blackout drunk.

I'm an alcoholic and have no problem saying it now. Like you I cannot moderate alcohol, at the club or anywhere else, so to have a life worth living I had to quit and learn to love me without a haze of booze or pills or anything else. Now I work at a topless alcohol club in Orange County, CA and have never loved my job more. I LOVE dancing sober and while this didn't happen over night, you can do it too if quitting is really important to you.

Yes. It's embarassing to say but I have been fired from 3 clubs for drinking. And these were clubs I made a lot of money and traveled into for years...

Smoked weed at work once when I was just starting out. It was a dive where you could just pass a blunt around the dressing room so I figured what the hell. At that point in my life I smoked constantly whenever I had downtime so obviously I loved it. The different environment and pressure to make money nearly gave me a panic attack, though.

I don't know if you actually like weed, but keep in mind that the effects can be unpredictable in a new environment no matter how much you already smoke.
